["Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: Joni/Kilauren Yeah, I read this, too. I was appalled to think that this poor young woman is having her dirty linen aired because she is the daughter of a celebrity. I beg all of you not to go there. Among all Canadian rags, I hate the National Post. It's like the [American] National Review, except stupider. Kilauren Gibb is obviously enduring some tough times. So have we all: let's let her deal with them in privacy and in her own time, the way we all did. That said, I hate to emerge from lurkdom to say something which may be construed as negative. Joni's giving up her daughter for adoption was selfless and wise. Her wish to contact her daughter thirty years later was understandable. Her claim that she now has a family complete with grandchildren has always struck me as self-absorbed and fraught with potential difficulty. When you give a child up to adoption, surely you yield parenthood to the adoptive parents. Yuck! I'm disgusting even myself - this is a private matter and should be treated as such. Ashamed of our Canadian media, and not for the first time, Roberto Stephen Epstein wrote: > Today's Cdn National Post contains an article: "The reunion, from both > sides now" about a bitter custody battle involving Kilauren and the father > of her young daughter. > > I was quite surprised to read about a police visit to Joni's LA home when > Kilauren was visiting a year ago. When you relinquish a child for adoption, you give up the right to be a parent and in Joni's case, a mother. That said, how on earth can any woman deny her mother-reality..how can she deny or turn her mother-heart away from the infant she carried for nine months. Impossible. I feel that I can safely say that many a woman who signs their baby's life away also signs herself up for a life sentence of pain and regret. Let me take you inside that young woman's head for a few minutes. Let me take you into the darkness of her middle of the night fear where she holds onto threads of hope and desperate dreams that one day, maybe just maybe some miracle will happen, she wont have to give the baby up afterall. And once she did, maybe, just maybe she would at the very least one day be able to know that child, know they were okay, had a good life. The heartwrenching stuff of impossible dreams. And maybe that child would one day forgive her for abandoning him. These are but a few of the demons circling inside her. So very often, with no financial, emotional, or spiritual support and very little compassion toward her, many birth mothers are given no choice but to give up a child. They are after all, as Joni says, deemed the Jezebels. Branded. Banished from the kingdom because they had sex and got caught. (Magdalene Laundries playing in my head. ) What chance did a young mother have to raise a child herself when her own mother and father didnt even know that child existed because she was too afraid to tell them for fear of being excommunicated from the family, her only hope for survival through this hell on earth. How could this young mother do anything but stand shivering, terrified, cold and alone, on the steps of a coffee shop of a small town hotel at 2 am not knowing where the hell to go because even the last person she thought she could rely on, the baby's father, had also turned against her having etched shame and blame against her soul. yes, birth mothers such as Joni technically give up their rights to the child and in my humble opinion, once you carry a child and know, truly know that sweet little baby in your heart and soul, you do not give up that child. Not really. The confusion lies within the fact that you know deep inside yourself, in the hour of darkness and alone, that you are a mother but not. How do you reconcile that? So you sign all the papers in the family name and now everyone gets to have a happy ending? How? And many years later, what happens if you are lucky enough to fall into the arms of reunion. Once again you are judged. Once a jezebel, always a jezebel. Are they all over the room? Is there reverb from the room? Details man! >> The musicians are sound staged reasonably well from left to right. Joni's guitar has a very large ambiance, picking up a great deal of the studio's size in it's resonance. It sounds as though Joni may have had a 'stereo' amp set up for this concert. There is definitely room 'presence', but it very believable in it's dimension and impact, and not 'artificially reverby' at all. And the mix places you within the audience in a row close to the stage. Very pleasing. The 5.1 DVD mix of PWWAM is not as superb as the DVD 5.1 mix of 'James Taylor LIVE At the Beacon Theatre' (still the most remarkable 5.1 mix I've ever heard with regard to a realistic experience of being in the audience) - but PWWAM's 5.1 mix is better than that of the 5.1 on Steely Dan's Two Against Nature Live Concert DVD. The Dan's DVD is best enjoyed in two channel Stereo, as the 5.1 mix is artificial. PWWAM's 5.1 DVD track is definitely on par with Santana's 'Supernatural' Live DVD 5.1 mix as well as with Sting's 5.1 track on his 'The Brand New Day Tour - - Live From the Universal Amphitheatre' DVD. You know, since I've been buying live concert DVD's I find myself spending more time enjoying these, if I'm sitting down for 'attentive' listening, than I do with my CD's. Still love my CD's, but man, seeing as well as hearing my favorite music artists displaying their 'chops' in 'real time' is awesome. So personal and intimate, and well, as close to real as one can get. I can prove it: Joni is highlighted with gold cinematography/special effects as she sings Woodstock at the piano. Neil Young gives Stehpen Stills an "oh, gow up" look when Stills starts bouncing around too much while jamming. Joan Baez is transfixed by the wonderful close of "Oh, Happy Day" by the Edward Hawkins Singers. These tidbits are in my mind, but I want them on tape. (Actually, I want them on DVD but I will settle for videotape.) The movie is NOT, repeat, NOT available commercially; I have been looking for it since 1985 when I got my first VCR and it HAS NOT BEEN EVER available commerically in ANY format at least since then. If it were, I would buy it, as my shelf of things like "Janis" from 1976 and "Monterey Pop" and "Shadows and Lght" (Japanese version), Rocky Hoor in two formats, 3 copies, Woodstock in 2 formats, 2 copies, and other purchases would attest. I CANNOT tape it off the cable tv as the cable outfit that services rural Western Michigan does not carry a cable company that has ever played "Celebration at Big Sur" Believe me, I have looked and look to this day. In that THERE IS NO OTHER WAY for me to ever see Celebration at Big Sur again except if some one tapes it/copies it for me, I am begging someone to take pity on me. I have gone to such length with my dilemma because I asked someone once before to do it and they refused, implying I denying the copyright holders their food money and stealing their very souls. Hey, I ain't Napster (never even been to Napster). If I could get it commerically, I would happily buy it just like I paid for movie tickets to see it many times over back in 1970 or 71, whenever it was released. If I could tape it off cable tv for my own private enjoyment, I surely would. I am denied those options. I need someone else to do it for me. Please someone?
