When she was lamenting it one day I suggested she be relieved her parents didn't name her "Tinker." :-D Anyone else know someone with an "unfortunate" name? Just a couple of quick notes: 1. The big news is that this weekend I bought a new toy, a Vestax BDT 2000 Turntable with a built in pre-amp; this means I can now record direct from LP/45's to CD. As I'm starting to get vinyl from E-bay, this will help us to get a better quality of sound. I did a couple of vinyl to CD transfers over the weekend and it really sounds great - to me, anyway. So if you have or get something for the collection, feel free to send me the vinyl copy if you wish. 2. Hopefully Volume 14 will be ready to rumble in about a week. Jonatha Brooke, in my view, is one of the very few best singer/songwriters working today (Shawn Colvin is another), and one of the even fewer deserving of Joni Mitchell's legacy. She started out in a duo with singer Jennifer Kimball called The Story, who produced a good first album, GRACE IN GRAVITY, and a brilliant follow up, THE ANGEL IN THE HOUSE. Jonatha was the primary voice and writer. She went solo with another brilliant one called PLUMB, followed by TEN CENT WINGS, LIVE, and a new one due 2/13, STEADY PULL. Like Joni, she is a "shape-shifter," never content to stay in one place, her sound evolving from folk/pop with jazz and Latin tinges, broadening to encompass rock, R&B, more density and complexity. She is as inspired a melodist as there ever has been, with an equally superb harmonic sense ... always dancing on the edge between surprising and satisfying. Smart, tuneful, musical, moving. And fantastic lyrics. Also, she can really do it live, either alone or with a band ... she is a musician. (Disclosure: a friend and musical colleague of mine, Ingrid Graudins, sang with her for a few years on record and gigs.) I can't recommend Jonatha Brooke highly enough, no matter how hard I try, and I can't imagine that someone into Joni would not find much to love about her work. - -Fred Simon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 18:50:02 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: Covers Update In a message dated 2/11/01 4:54:15 PM Eastern Standard Time, SCJoniGuy@aol.com writes: << 1. I don't have the HDCD version of STAS yet (probably because I have 3 vinyls of it ;-) but I am amazed that they were able to engineer out the bell jar sound. I'll be looking forward to hearing the CD. (I like the bell jar sound, though ;-) In addition to the background you posted, I've also heard in interviews with Joni and Crosby that part of that bell jar sound was intentional - Croz had this wild idea of having Joni play and sing into (the wires of?) a grand piano for some kind of effect. Also, the master tape got messed up somehow and then the engineer died suddenly in the middle of the process. Croz has also indicated that the release of the "flawed product" was because the original engineer was not around to fix the tape and they were under pressure to get the album out on schedule. You've shed some more light on the legend. Do you think our original "flawed" vinyl will have some collectible value someday? ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 19:38:52 EST From: TerryM2222@aol.com Subject: Re: jonatha (now with joni content) In a message dated 2/11/2001 4:53:12 PM Eastern Standard Time, FredNow@aol.com writes: << I can't recommend Jonatha Brooke highly enough, no matter how hard I try, and I can't imagine that someone into Joni would not find much to love about her work. >> I hate doing this, but I will anyway: DITTO.
