LOL! Seriously though, I agree that it would be interesting to have a "Concerts Comments" resource, simply because Joni is SUCH a good storyteller, and like you say, her stories can sometimes shed some new light on her songs. I ain't about to volunteer to head it up, as I have enough slings & arrows with the Covers, but I'll certainly be glad to transcribe stuff I come across in my collection for whoever wants to manage it. I studied the lyrics with my grade 12 today trying to understand what the 'beast' is about..and then I introduced to them Anderson's version(JM's version) of 'The Second Coming' - Slouching towards Bethlehem' and after that we read the Bible Matthew and and St.John's Apocalypse finding the beast there. The students said that the ' beast 'is a dangerous metaphor, because men are noit responsible for what the 'beast' does..I think it was a good lesson, but when I wanted the students to listen to the songs the cd player turned out to be ruined..what a pity, well I'll see them again on Wednesday with a new player.. Anyway, I like Andersen, perhaps he was inspired by Jm since the song was writte in 1998...Regards from Karin in Germany ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Feb 2001 10:23:40 EST From: Mauski4648@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2001 #41 In einer Nachricht vom 04.02.2001 8:18:56 Uhr schreibt les@jmdl.com: << *dog ate on my hair* look going mid-eighties. ;-) >> I love that expresion, guess every woman has to go through this suffering getting a permanent wave once in her lifetime. I think she's using the "Now" lead in for the two lines to run a small slide show to shorthand her serial monogamism. She personalizes it well, offering herself as surf: effervescent and buoyant, able to lift and carry her lover (perhaps with celebrity and wealth?), then as the striated, drained footprint of withdrawal: her lover abandoned like a beached piece of carrion. Chilling, and then some. CC "Or maybe it's you, Judas in the end. I've always interpreted this to be about Chuck Mitchell. He was much more of a folk purist than Joni. She got rich and famous, and he kept on folking along. Based on some of Joni's comments, I have guessed that he had a somewhat judgmental streak and could have demonstrated "contempt" for Joni's music (this may be wildly unfair to Chuck; I am only going on Joni's comments in interviews). It's true that this song was written many years after the marriage ended, but Joni does seem to have a long memory! > "And you were in the parking lot > Subterranean by your own design > The virtue of your style inscribed > On your contempt for mine" > > Are these lyrics about Dylan????
