Quite a few times I saw Joni turn around and look back at the two of them. Wally just looks on smiling in full admiration. One of the things I love about this list is that, until I came here, I thought Joni was making all that stuff up herself, and I admired her imagery. Which is excellent in itself, but, after finding out (here) that she has adapted the words of others (artists, poets, philosophers, whatever...), it makes me appreciate her even more - she obviously must read a great deal and pay attention to the words of others. The many interpretations of this particular work are probably more varied than any other in Van Gogh's oeuvre. Some see it as Van Gogh's "suicide note" put to canvas, while others delve beyond a superficial overview of the subject matter and favour a more positive approach. How many stars/artists care about their fans as Joni cared for Wally in this weekend? To have had Wally over at that point in his life... no stoking the star machinery her, just being a real human being giving Wally a very special moment in his life. And Wally's write-up... it brings tears to read again, 'A Week-end with Joni' made more poignant that it was about this wonderful weekend (and written) so close to when he died. Wally shared this all with us - a real act of generousity in that his health and strength were not all that super when he worked on this for us. http://www.jonimitchell.com/JoniTrip.html This other link is familiar to the old timers but for the newer JMDL posters, or those who haven't this in a while, it has nothing to do with Wally except that I think he had a great sense of humor, one of the reasons his website sparkles beyond mere adoration and becomes the transcendent joy that it is. http://faculty.uca.edu/james.murray/joni150.gif Wally, living and with us always in our memories... " Someone recently asked if we would hae Joni if we didn't have the Beatles. I've thought about that a lot... and I am sure that we would have had Joni, although surely the Beatles influenced her as they did all of us. Than I notice in reading through Wally B's account of his weekend with Joni, Wally writes of Joni mentioning who influenced her and there it is: among the prominent influences on Joni, as stated by Joni as related by Wally B: "... Paul McCartney's knack for catchy melodies..." In that "Impossible Dreamer" is in part a remembrance of John Lennon, there is another sign that Joni, gifted artist in tune to her times, was touched as we all were by the genius that was the Beatles and has interpreted that through her own inimitable talent, as she has been touched by other influences. Now, I would have never have guessed that McCartney would be cited as an influence by Joni, but there it is... So: catchy melodies? Help Me Both Sides Now Free Man in Paris Carey Raised on Robbery Big Yellow Taxi Woodstock these are some of the catchiest melodies that Joni has done, IMHO. The number of times that some of those of have covered says something about their catchiness... But on a happier note, today is my dad's 80th birthday. I just talked to him & my mom on the phone. They are temporarily in an assisted living facility in Omaha. Mom has been released from the hospital and is doing much better although she has some blanks in her memory about the last few months. Tyler asked here is my opinion, in random bits of thoughts: there is lots of great music out there & lots of kids are listening to lots of good stuff...sure there is the britney bizkit stuff that seems to so prevalent because it is being promoted so heavily by the music industry... the music industry has always been about the business, not the music & the greed & deceipt is legendary...there has always been crap out there that kids like (for awhile) & which parents detest so that is nothing new. that said, it does seem like commercial music is at a low point at the moment in terms of the message & creativeness of the music...i think this is a result of the stakes being so high, financially- the major labels sink around a million dollars into each SONG, to promote it...which is taken out of what the artist actully makes & if they don't recoup, then it is the artist that is in debt. but i digress... so, with this kind of financial risk, what is promoted is what is known to sell--sex & violence... of course the internet has in many ways started to level the playing field, except that there is stuff going on that has the potential of changing all this. for more information go to http://futureofmusic.org/ or http://femmefatale.nu/dmca/freedom%20in%20webcasting3.htm trying to get back to the original quesion, i don't think that what is being played on the radio or being promoted by major labels is any more indicitive of what kids are listening to than the 6 o'clock news is indicitive of what is going on in the world. Having watched "A Girl Thing (Part 1)" recently (on Showtime), I hereby confirm that "A Case Of You" is indeed sung by Joni, and the version is from the album "Both Sides Now." Parts 1 and 2 of "A Girl Thing" are no longer airing. www.sho.com advises that you check back next month to see if/when the show will air again. NO offense to those in the accounting business but it is the accounting biz that is in charge of creative decisions, from what i understand & how crazy is that? yes, the lowest common denominator gives new meaning to the bottom line...though I am obviously very cynical about the music industry i AM very very encouraged by the kids that I know--they are smart & sensitive & many have been exposed to great music, in spite of what is popular. ******************************************** Kate Bennett sponsored by Polysonics www.polysonics.com hear the music at: www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/ www.katebennett.com www.cdbaby.com/katebennett www.amazon.com ******************************************** - -----Original Message----- From: Jason Maloney [mailto:jason.maloney@virgin.net] Sent: Sunday, February 04, 2001 4:15 PM To: Kate Bennett Cc: joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: those gosh-darn kids Great post, Kate..and very true. It's also worth noting - and bearing in mind - that the Music Industry has become more closely linked with Major Multimedia Corporations (Time, Sega, Universal) in recent years and as such the emphasis throughout the Biz is even more geared to lowest-common-dominators and the financial viablity of the operations than it ever was. Job security amongst record execs is not what it used to be. They have to deliver the right kind of success, and in the timespan dictated by the money-men. As a result, they can't be expected to have quite the same approach to the whole process anymore. Well, Michaelangelo, was uh...well, his record company was pretty rough, you see, he liked to work in white marble, that's what he felt he did best, but they insisted that he had to do the Sistine Chapel roof. So, next thing he knew, there he was up there with trends all being as they were...he was lying on his back with paint dripping in his eye, and thinking to himself, "Anybody could do this, I mean, this is ridiculous, you know, and he saw visions all the time while these colors were leaking all over him, he saw visions of pure white form, and he was SO frustrated, so one day he climbed down off of the scaffolding and he said to the Pope, you know, "Listen Mr. P", he said, "I just have no inspiration, I can think of ten different guys that could do this job just as well". Anyway, the Pope wouldn't let up, and he said "No no man, this is bad, finish what you gotta do"...this by the way is not autobiographical, I'm a free agent...so anyways, uh...ol' Michaelangelo in his frustration goes wandering across the bluff...suddenly he looks up in the sky, at the peak of his frustration, there gliding above him are all these brawny, muscular torsos...it's a gift, all he has to do is pick up a pencil, and sketch it...there they are, they're all like given to him, right? So as I was comin' up on the Mississippi Delta one day, there they were - the clouds of Michaelangelo,I mean you didn't have to know anatomy, he just picked up a pencil and drew them, you know they had pecs and biceps and fingers (laughs) that's the wrong one...anyway, this is called Refuge in the Roads"..... And yes I know what the title is on the record, but that's what Joni said that night... 'Night all...
