I hope you are lucky enough to hear her someday, being the audiophile that you are. I forgot to mention that she is a big Joni fan and that, during her concert, she performed her own unique and beautiful version of Woodstock in a DADGAD tuning. She was prompted to learn the song by Manhard and she said that her version of the song came to her almost as though it was her own song. If she ever produces a CD with Woodstock included, we'll have to make sure it gets into Bob's Covers Project. All the best to you, Jim! Marian Vienna ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Jan 2001 20:01:04 -0800 From: "Patrick Willoughby" Subject: artifice, brutality and innocence I think Joni is addressing the appetite that a jaded society or spirit has for external sources of renewal. "Innocence" in particular, is particularly appealing to the burnt out soul, because that is what has been lost. Creativity, which is an internal drive, is in a sense a form of ongoing innocence, or at least, an ability to retain a sense of wonder at the world. Although this has never been one of my favorites in her canon, I have always found these "three" concepts intriguing. I think there is a correlation between Three Great Stimulants and the narrator's cry in Beat of Black Wings--the old hate the young...again the old men who create wars send the youth to fight them, and to lose their innocence. The commentary in TGS is perhaps about cultural vampirism in a way. Just a thought. Any demos of course would be golden. Alternative versions of recorded songs like: All I Want & My Old Man from BBC 1970, with alternate lyrics, A Case of You w/same. "Speechless" from My Top 12 Instrumental Passion Play with scat vocal from 1988 San Remo Fest "Yarrow" from 1976 Spectrum "Get Together" from 1969 PBS ALL the early second fret/WMMR material that was never released "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" from 1991 CBC But, as I already HAVE all this, I would hope for stuff I HAVEN'T heard yet. NAMELY, the whole late night session that produced the jazzy Hejira, with Herbie, Wayne, David Sanborn, McFerrin, etc. You know those guys jammed for hours, and the recordings exist in somebody's vault! Most artists of Joni's stature realize that their rare stuff is being traded and is in demand by fans, so they go ahead and do up a proper package. Joni is certainly overdue for this kind of treatment... I mean, "Moons & Junes & Ferris Wheels" are all tied to each other, but this combination is awkward, and again, intentionally so. Blue is certainly a song filled with tension, and these threefers contribute to that tension. Grass and ass have a more positive connotation than the other four. "Guns" is certainly negative, and may relate to the fact that Crosby was usually packing heat around this time, according to his biography, as well as participating in the other 5 'stimulants'. And the way she says "lots of laughs" in that sorrowful way after the lists just caps it all. I'm finally coming up for air to report on Kool Kakki's mini Joni-fest which had a maximum of Joni junkies. The Great and Powerful Paz was there with his VG-8 and his amazing repertoire of songs de Mitchell and songs of everyone else. Fortunately, he is still letting his freak flag fly and he was also sporting some toe nails painted a pearly gray. Michael and I have decided to go on a tour of America's living rooms this spring and he will be my musical director and guitar teacher. Also present were some listers from Kakki's CSNY group who took us through some of those astounding tunes. Phyllis, in her new role as ceramics artist and entrepreneur looked chic in Valentine red and cocktail black and Darice, the Medicine Woman, made us some deadly delish cheesecake. Steve D, the Dulcimerator, was there to provide some Appalachian accompaniment and as always, he was with the lovely Michelle. I think they are one of the nicest, happiest couples in So. Cal. My good buddy Coyote Rick was there as well as J ulius the Articulate. I am sure I am leaving someone out, but also present were all our old pals Jim Beam, Jose Cuervo and Johnny Walker. For the first time I met Allison who plays guitar and sings and has also been a DJ! I was surprised to meet Nikki and see that she is a 21 year old cutie with a cool cutaway Taylor guitar. She gave me an "e" string and passed along one of the best Joni gifts of all time, a t-shirt from Russ with the cover of Hejira printed on it. Thank you, Russ, this is what I always wanted! It's nice to see Allison and Nikki picking up the Joni banner for the younger generation. I missed the talented Kate Bennet again, but I did get to talk with Marian who called all the way from Vienna. She has a husky/sexy Brenda Vaccaro kind of voice. I am eager to hear her sing. I went back to the Joni tabs recently to see that Marian and the other guitarists have brought it up another level and you can now print out a "friendly version" of the tabs. The Joni tabs are an extraordinary labor of love from these dedicated individuals. Getting back to the grind, but I wish all of you could have been there! When I hear 'and the gas leaks, and the oil spills, and sex sells everything and sex kills' I think: what kind of society endorses such methods of promoting products that can lead to unsafe behaviour? Where is the justice in a society like this? Who cares about the effects of sex in media? Is it all about the 'almighty dollar'? Do advertisers ever accept responibility for the images and suggestive scenes they flash on screens and billboards? Should they? What is just about millions dying from sexually transmitted diseases, wildlife and the environment being irrepirably harmed by multi-million-dollar companies? Do we truly live in a just society? Or are we just fooling ourselves because we happen to be more prosperous than the next country? There are a lot of songs taken directly from the official album release, but in many other cases, they've included an "alternate take" of a song, and included notes on why it wasn't chosen over the official release. For example, Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. They recorded several versions of this song, but went with the first, because after a few takes, it (apparently) started to sound too "structured". I love this idea - including alternate takes of their most popular songs, which we otherwise would never get to hear. If Joni did this, I'm sure it wouldn't detract too much from back-catalogue sales, since people would probably still want to hear the offiicially released versions. Some of the CSN tracks on the boxed-set are quite different to what was actually released, and it's great having the notes on each track which in some cases give a nice potted history of the development of the song. But if I ever make it to a Jonifest, I want everyone's solemn promise that they won't give me cosmopolitan's! I have bad memories of that stuff, and vowed I would never drink them again! Martinis good, cosmopolitans BAD!!! Hell - sticking to beer these days, much safer. And certainly safer than the chocotini I had a couple of weeks ago - far too nice (and WAY too dangerous)! ____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://www.nbls.co.nz ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jan 2001 16:22:48 -0700 From: "McGuire, Sean" Subject: Steely Dan & Joni - common title Bob teased: "PS: Becker & Fagen wrote a song with a title also used later by Joni. (How many KNEW I would start out with that line???) I don't even remember doing that one!! What does that mean??? Did I have TOO much fun?? Who played that one cause I don't do it consiously. I DIT I DIT have too much fun! Well as usual I am So late posting because I had too much fun. Everyone has pretty much posted what we did so I will skip all that and just make some short comments. First of all thanks to my old hejira buddy Kakki for hosting another wonderful party (and under the pressure of having a sick daddy-hope he is better soon). You really know how to party and the tinis were fab as well as the mix of LeeShore/JMDL groups. Scott was great to play with and boy Robin WHAT A CUTIE!!! But I digress yet again. Nikki, Alison, Julius, and (nonlister Barb), thank you guys for making my NAMM experience the most unique one I have ever had. Great group of people to be stuck in an elevator with. Alison thank you for painting my toes so that Clark could immortalize that fact on the JMDL archives forever. Riding/walking around LA with you guys was so much fun and my face is still sore...........from laughing.....LOL Nikki ( a very beautiful musical spirit), you are playing SO well. I noticed that other people were noticing this as well and doing Tangled Up In Blue with you was a highlight. You better be doing a set ast Ashara's this year or we'll get out the tar and feathers (and the boards and the nails). BTW, thank you SO much for the Joni picks (and to master sleuth Jeff Clark for finding them). Also Alison you need to cut the shit and play more guitar girl cause you rock and you know it. Come to think of it a couple of more body piercings and tatoos would do you good as well. Julius my evil twin brother, it's always great to party with you and your spirit is SO contaigious. Thanks very much to Russ (who I spoke on th phone with at the Davis minifest HI RUSS) thanks so much for the T-shirt. I LOVE IT! I wanted the purple one but it was too small and that beeatch Alison grabbed it. It could have been a really cool mid drift on me. Darice the queen of west coast music sluts (also VERY lucky with tickets to benefit concerts etc.) Great cheesecake and food spread. A wonderful assistant to the hostess with the mostess. Phyliss you are always so much fun and a great singer and supporter of the music end of things. BTW great hotel suggestion, we were able to purchase some great munitions and arms for the revolution back home. Clark, the higher the hair-the closer to God. Your new song is wonderful and I am so happy for you that you have found another strength in your life (besides the storytelling/lies that you are famous for). Steve as usual is the portrait of happiness and the lovely Michelle as well. Once again it was so special to be able to play with you. When Kakki gets a full blown fest going (you know that week long thing she has been working on) I wanna spend a whole day playing just acoustic intsruments with you. I have to go all the way to LA to see Coyote Rick cause when he comes to New Orleans he is far TOO in demand to be bothered with an old fart like me, but that's ok. I hope one of your houses gets picked for a Joni gathering in Kakki's master plan. I finally got to meet the beautiful (much more so in person) (and WAY talented) Kate Bennett and her other half Jeff, who was a great sport and a wonderful player and songwriter hisownself. I wish you guys alot of success with your musical projects. Marian, thanks so much for being there on the other end of the telephone (at least). It was great to hear from you and to hear about Ramona. I hope we get to have a private audience with you this year. I miss playing with you and absorbing all your knowledge. Thanks to you I am popular at JMDL parties and you have expanded by palette like no other. To all of you on the JMDL again: If you ever hear someone on the JMDL say, "we are planing a JoniFest" or "get together" or any variation on that KEY JMDL thing. I urge you to take part in it and find out the latest drug that is sweeping the nation. I WARN you it is quite addictive and while there are after effects they are all that unpleasant especially if you don't mix it with alcohol too (note to self: LESS TEQUILA or was it the limes?) much and you will be ok. Sleep deprevation is a GOOD thing and it makes you so much more fun (just ask Ashara). You will not regret getting involved in such a diverse yet similar group of folk anywhere.
