What are your favorite *live* Joni tracks? My local roots-oriented AAA station plays music recorded in-concert once a week. I told the host that I'd 'pitch' some stuff to her. Amazingly she's willing to spin unreleased stuff, "if it's good". I'm especially interested in what gems people like best from the uhhhmmm unreleased recordings that have been circulating. To get the ball rolling, my current favorite is the 2000 BSN Tour version of "The Judgment of the Moon and Stars (Ludwig's Tune)". I don't think it fits in between Cheryl Crow and Dar Williams though. It might be a tough sell because, like BB King, it's almost outside the format. What do you think? Would the spoken intro for "Magdalene Laundries" be boring to the radio listeners? Can anyone point me to a live version of "The Last Time I Saw Richard?" I don't have a track list of Simon's tape trees. Has anyone built one? There's a great version of "Real Good, For Free" somewhere, but..... where? Which of the Joni & James tracks do you recommend for airplay? Who wants to share with the class? Hands please? You said, +ADw-The song is so dense, lyrically. It kind of sprawls all over from male/female relationships to society in general. It's probably the most extensive exploration of her recurrent theme of duality that she's ever done.+AD4- I couldn't chime more. : -) Willy the Shake ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 09:30:40 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Top Ten Favorite Live Joni Tracks? << Can anyone point me to a live version of "The Last Time I Saw Richard?">> Um, there's the one on MOA, for starters... ...also, she performed the song on her '79 S&L tour, although it was not included on the live record. Also performed on that tour but not released: Big Yellow Taxi, Raised On Robbery, Help Me, Jericho, and Jaco's Solo, which totally rocks! <> Yes I have...anyone who would like a copy, let me know. Some of the detail is on the JMDL, but not all of it. << There's a great version of "Real Good, For Free" somewhere, but..... where?>> That would be opinion, of course, but my favorites would be from the '83 tour where she adds the chorus extension, "Playin' like a fallen angel playin' like a shooting star Playin' for a hatful of nothing To the honking of the cars << Which of the Joni & James tracks do you recommend for airplay? >> California, Circle Game, You Can Close Your Eyes are my personal faves... Bob NP: Will Taylor, "My Name Is Truth" PS: Your "top ten favorite live Joni tracks" is an interesting question. Have tried to buy sevral > HDCD's recently. I always > ask the staff to show me the disc first. NONE of them had HDCD > on them. i bought the European HDCD of STAS a couple of months ago. it definitely is HDCD. it has the tiny logo on the back and the artwork is the restored version by Robbie Cavolina. the disc doesn't have the HDCD logo, but it's the brown Reprise design unlike the old version. the code on the disc centre ends with "02/00" which i believe is the time the remastering took place. more importantly, there is a clear improvement in sound. i think the 'fake' HDCD's all had a big sticker on the front, stating 'HDCD' clearly. this one only has a small silver sticker with 'newly digitally remastered from the original master tapes'. i've also seen a similar 'real' HDCD of Clouds. - --jussi ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 10:00:53 EST From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Top Ten Favorite Live Joni Tracks? And then there's that Third World interlude. Hmmm.....>> Maybe I'm reaching...could she be contrasting/comparing the conflicts of the interpersonal relationship with the conflicts between "developed" and "undeveloped" countries or societies? Like how one culture exploits another in "Dreamland", so do people exploit one another in relationships. After all, when she hits rock bottom, she refers to herself as an "Off Night Backstreet" using a geographical reference... <> I agree, and interesting when you think about how well it fits in the mix, even though it first popped up on Miles of Aisles, a couple of years before she would attack the "theme" of DJRD...also interesting that she performed DJRD as a companion piece to Coyote on her HOSL tour in 1976, and featured Talk to Me in that tour as well. To be able to then later present them as part of a separate cohesive whole is testimony to her genius, I think... << I think Paprika Plains eventually ties in with the title track. She's talking about the indigenous people of North & South America. >> Which is her heritage as well as she says she has that blood in her...so maybe on one level Paprika examines her being drawn back to her roots in a more "third world" setting while eventually returning to the guy in the "Cotton Club"... Geez, it IS tough to try and get your arms around this entire masterwork! By introducing it with the line about pissing a tequila anaconda, you can't help but smile at it. Yet there is that sense of frustration as well. That's why I think she uses Chaplin and Bergman, 2 filmmakers whose works were filled with poignant humor, simultaneously funny & sad.... Here's something else I picked up on: "we could talk about power, About Jesus AND Hitler AND Howard Hughes" The thing that struck me was her use of the word AND instead of OR. And following the line about power, she's using Jesus as an example of SPIRITUAL power, Hitler as an example of PHYSICAL power, and Hughes as an example of ECONOMIC power. In other words, she's not saying that we can talk about them seperately, but rather discuss them in tandem. Fascinating stuff. I'm convinced that there's not a word in here chosen at random. I look forward to the final report. One of the things that I love about LA is that there are all kinds of famous people who have lived there obviously and their houses (if wall could talk) make for interesting visits. Last year I was down there and a life long Angelino took me on a tour of several places including marylin Monroes bungalo and the crime scene of the OJ incident. Of course that trip to about five places doesnt begin to scratch the scratch on the surface but it was realy interesting. The other thing is their encountering a "fantastic" band they had never heard of. I experience this in both New York when I go there and in LA every time I go there. All budding star wannabes go to these places and play for peanuts and never get discovered leaving legions of listeners with vivid memories of incredible people they will always wonder why they never "made it". Of course I havent been to Chicago (a dream I must someday fulfil) and I havent been to Nashville or Memphis (likewise) where the same can probably be said. But kakkis report made me think of this. Looking forward to the final final. marcel deste ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 13:27:52 -0500 From: Gary Zack Subject: SO Cal Gathering Hi all, I too have received no reports on the So Cal Gathering at Kakki's. The files are rather large, and take about 1 or 2 minutes each to download. One of these images will be offered as a prize in the contest, though I'm not sure which one yet - - I might let the winner pick. They might also serve as inspiration to someone to try coloring one themselves. I used pastels in all four of the versions. In the darker areas of the pictures, some of the lyrics do get 'buried' in the color, but if anything I think it just adds a little mystery to them. If anyone is interested in purchasing one out right, they are selling for a $75 donation to the websites (plus a $5 shipping fee). I'm sorry if I'm coming across as pest with all of this. I just feel this is a great way to show support for these two great sites - who continuously show their support of us! Enough preaching - now back to your regularly scheduled program. They showed some nice pictures of Joni and a video clip of her singing "California." The commentary included a weird statement though, something like, "Joni reached her emotional peak with the Blue album." Aren't all of her albums emotional peaks? Do they even know what they're talking about? Well, it's finally back and I no longer have to hold its hand - it's now fully automated. Your profile appears immediately after you type it in and - - if you are somewhat of a graphics guru - so does your photo! Also back are the song and album voting booths. Old-timers will chuckle as this is about the 5th attempt at placing the voting booths on-line. All previous attempts have been plagued by programming problems.
