Silky Veils of Ardor - Now she withdraws herself from the relationship altogether, but just like in "Amelia", she longs to crash back into the arms of love. She realizes that only in her dreams can she return to the way things used to be, whether it's her life in the country and that attitude, or the romance that once was a flame and is now a cinder. " i loved this post, bob. i remember last year sometime i wrote about struggling with DJRD, how the different themes of individuality and community and history and timelessness tangled up and tripped me up -- especially when i think of this record coming after hejira, which in my mind is a paradigmatic joni album: a masterpiece of unity, or variations on a theme. DJRD after that seems cluttered, broken up into pieces, frustrating -- a joy, certainly, and one hejira is all i will ever need, but a crazy joy. i remember last year many people wrote about their thinking about this album and helped me gather more understanding. so when i read this part about "silky veils" i had to chime in. this is ONE part of DJRD that makes perfect artistic sense to me, and i chimed in with this last year, but here it is again: i find "it's just in dreams we fly / in my dreams we fly" to be one of the most powerful, heartbreaking, beautiful and redeeming couplets in all of JM's work. i hear her first line as addressed to someone, a lover, or me, listening alone: she says, i know the reality -- the hard work that goes into life and love. but THEN, with a small change of language she bursts into a beautiful sound and vision (oh i love her voice here), saying, but wait, but wait, here is the crazy wonderful thing: in my dreams we can fly! meaning: in my art and in my imagination, we can do those things that cannot be done. and what a gift that is! one line answers, completes, refutes the other. and ends with an incredible affirmation of art's power to transform. on a personal note, i have thought about this couplet often when i am sad about not having my beloved grandmother alive any more (she died three years ago.) i dream about her often. and when i am dejected i might think, it's only in dreams that i can see her or talk to her. but sometimes i will then be overwhelmed by happiness, because, of course: what a gift! i sometimes have dreams where i am granted time with her! i try to wake up thankful, not crushed. thanks for reading. - --emily NP: "don't go to strangers" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 08:45:23 -0600 From: "ab" Subject: Brian Blade in Jazz Times magazine (& a few other goodies) This is OLD NEWS but don't know if it was mentioned before or not. I just dug this issue out of one of our moving boxes. Back in November 2000 Brian Blade was on the cover of Jazz Times. "Dig the NEW BREED Brian Blade Jim Black Nasheet Waits & Matt Wilson define the new generation of jazz drummers" There is a 6 page interview w/pictures inside and mentions of Joni. First off, on page 10, is the content page with a full pic of Brian Blade and the contents written over it. The very first is the Brian Blade interview by Greg Tate, "From stints with Joni Mitchell to Wayne Shorter, Brian Blade is one of the most versatile drummers on the scene. From his family to his drum gear, he's also a wide ranging conversationalist." The interview titled, "BLADE the Sharpest" starts on page 30. Passages with Joni references: "He has been first-call drummer for leaders as disparate as Harry Connick Jr., Kenny Garrett, Daniel Lanois, Joni Mitchell and, currently, Wayne Shorter; his own passions move freely from Laura Nyro to John Coltrane's A Love Supreme." The interviewer asks him what was on his turntable when he was in high school. "A Love Supreme. Joni Mitchell's Hejira, which a friend gave to me after I'd just started driving. I learned it all. To this day it reveals something new." In 'GEARBOX' he talks about his instrument. "I love what the Zildjian cymbals do and I like dealing with that family of folks. With Joni I chose to play a larger set - bass drum was 24-inch with a 12-inch tom and a 16 inch floor tom - they were these beautifully crafted Ayotte drums. In another box on page 37 titled 'recommended cds featuring brian blade" Kenny Garrett: Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane Mark Turner: Ballad Session Joni Mitchell: Taming the tiger Elvis Costello & Bill Frisell: The Sweetest Punch: The songs of Costello and Bacharach Brad Mehidau: Introducing Brad Mehidau Joshua Redman: Spirit of the Moment: Live at the Village Vanguard The interview overall is a great read. As some of you know, my wife Judy and I are partners in a restaurant-cabaret in Manhattan. On Memorial Day Weekend, things are a little slower than usual there and my partners have agreed that JMDL and friends could use the place to hang out, make music eat and drink for a moderate cost. Because there are so many things to do in NYC, I tentatively thought we could break it up into three parts: Sat. afternoon, Sat. night and Sun. afternoon. There would be a $10 admission charge for each time slot. I will post the menu in a couple of weeks if there seems to be interest. We have a good grand piano on a modest-sized stage in the cabaret, seating at tables and banquettes for about 50 and an atmosphere and kitchen which almost everyone who's been there seems to admire very much. Some JMDL posts have spoken kindly of the club. I await comments and suggestions, DAVID LAHM ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 19:38:08 -0600 From: "Gerald" Subject: Re: The MP3 tribute to Joni continues !!! Frederick! I'm totally flattered! Downloaded it, and have played it a few times over. It's waaaaaay more interesting now! Tons o' fun! Some of my fave bits: the congas, the guitar solos, Joni introductions, and Patsy saying; "Right... Cheers! Thanks a lot!" LOVE the conga bits!!!!!! At 1:40 of playback, they're a perfect fit. Gave me goose bumps. You did what I had wanted to do, but had only made a failed, fleeting attempt at doing (creating and inserting samples). What software did you use? Funny thing; this internet. You toss something into it much like the proverbial message in a bottle thrown into the ocean. Someone grabs it, plays with it, tosses it back, and it's completely new and wonderful. THAT'S inspiring! "Right... Cheers! Thanks a lot!" That would be a very interesting collaboration, Imo. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 23:27:51 -0500 From: "Victor Johnson" Subject: song for Joni I haven't previously posted this to the list but I wrote a song about Joni Mitchell that I hope to include on my next cd. The song is entitled "California" and was written not long after jonifest last fall. I was just going to wait till next fall to share this but I thought I would go ahead and post the lyrics as I was thinking about how glad I am to be a part of this community and this song is somewhat about that. It is the first song I have ever written in a completely open tuning. DAEF#AD California (c)2000 Victor Johnson California, valley of sunshine, Carry me to your golden shore. Wind around the starlit highway, Up above the mountain cliffs. Sweet lady of the canyon, Won't you take me for a ride. Fill me with your perfect vision, Lead me to this holy land. California, coming closer, Starry skies and sleepless nights. Early morning, passion thunder, And the love keeps pouring out. Walk me through your redwood pastures, Beneath the trees so high and wide. Lay me down in fertile valleys, Morning glory on the vine. California, take me home, Brighten my southern sky. Sing me an unbroken lullaby, I'll spread my wings, teach me to fly. California, lonely skybird, Fly over ocean of white clouds. Gaze down on a deep blue heaven, Shining in the sunlight sky. Dream of wooden ships and mermaids, Dolphins jumping in the sea. With no particular destination, California's just around the bend. Victor Johnson http://www.cdbaby.com/victorjohnson "Just beyond the morning falls the river of your dreams, Escaping from the day these wild creatures run away."
