I ran across an interesting Joni item on eBay just now. It's a signed and numbered print of a 1969 erotic painting by renowned UK bluesman and erstwhile artist John Mayall titled "Joni's Favorite." The print is of a white woman with blondish hair engaged in the goat dance with a dark-skinned man. The description says that the woman in the painting is supposed to be our Joni. Well, I know Mayall has lived in Laurel Canyon, where Joni lives, for quite a number of years now. I'm wondering: did Joni pose for this? Who's the lucky stiff on top of her supposed to be? If anyone knows the story surrounding this painting, I'd be really interested in hearing it. Here's the url: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=543469390 I thought about bidding on it, fleetingly. But what the heck would I do with it? It would go straight into the closet, I'm sure. Not the kind of thing I could hang above the mantel or the headboard. Well, I guess I could, but how would I explain it to my, um, woman guests of either ethnicity? I guess I could store it someplace til I move to New York City, where I could hang it prominently and no one would bat an eye. But I digress... Karen Perris, the band's singer did backing vocals on Night Ride Home. At the weekend in Dublin when I saw a couple of their albums going cheap in a vinyl store it seemed worth a try. Umbrella from 1991 was produced by Larry Klein with special thanks to Joni Mitchell Klein and part recorded at Joni's house. A song called Joan contains the line "that's how you painted me". I don't know if it's got anything to do with Joni or not. Anyway I'm a fan and I'd recommend them to anyone who likes stuff like 10,000 Maniacs. But art and jazz come together in the exhibition of 36 works by 18 artists that opens on Sunday (1/21) in Westchester at the Katonah Museum of Art, Route 22 at Jay Street in Katonah. (914-232-9555) In "Jazz and Visual Improvisations," through April 15, improvisation, thythm, color and virtuosity are apparent in creations by artists like Romare Bearden, Jackson Pollack, Larry Rivers, Stuart Davis, Lee Krasner and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Oh, how I'd love to see Joni Mitchell join this rarefied group for such a show! Her "Nighttime at the Nucleus" or any of her "Mingus" cover works (including portraits of Charles, among others from "voices") would be perfect additions. It would be a great twist on the theme to view jazz from the artist's perspective, from the inside out. And really, how many artists can provide such works? Wow, that's a great print, such a dramatic and simple and sure-of-itself image. My guess, though, is that the gallery added on the part about it being our Joni. The painting the print comes from was done in 1966. Was Joni even in California then? And the red hair and woman's muscular arms and legs don't make me think of Joni. The pose itself does, no problem there (although Joni's always been private about her sex life so if this is supposed to be her, I doubt the painting comes from direct observation). Or maybe it's a fantasy about our Joni; wouldn't be the first time an artist has portrayed things only imagined. For me to believe the gallery's claim, I'd have to hear the artist himself saying it's specifically a picture of JM. Can't always trust galleries; they'll say most anything to get the highest price. And this print isn't even from the gallery directly so the claim is even harder to check out. The opening price of about $70 makes me a little suspicious, too, about this being an actual print and not a "poster" type reproduction, especially if it was originally sold by a gallery; a hand-pulled print of anything would cost a lot more than that. And Julius, what is this hint about you moving to New York City? You're right about no one here batting an eye at this image... the more wanton displays of sexuality the better we all say... oh wait, we used to say that... Mayor Rudy has tried to get us all to behave properly and be Disneyish now (very odd seeing Mickey and Goofy alongside the few remaining XXX places in Times Square).... but he's only got a year of mayorhood left, so there's hope for us all to soon toss off the oppression of squeaky cleanness and return to reality. :-) (although it does look like Disney's here to stay for a while, but maybe Mickey and pals will do some changing... ya never know). But back to you moving to NYC... are you going to do that? You seem like Mr. Sunshine itself with that smile of yours so that would be great, for me, for us all, and for you too I hope... very exciting. Please keep us informed. Years ago when Leslie, now in London, and I were at art college, I remember asking him about +ACI-the thumb and the satchel or the rented Rolls Royce+ACI-. He's much brighter than I am and so explained the fact that she was talking about hitch-hiking. Of course. I'll never forget that day (coz I felt so stooopid) and since then I've always sought to delve deeper into what Joni says. I'd previously just taken a lot of what lyrics are at face value - not only by Joni but others too. I was too wrapped up in the music then I suppose. Lyrics were something else. Saging as opposed to aging with Joni helps. For me it's always the music first. The poetry is something to savour afterwards. Some is obvious and some not so and that's what makes it lasting. Always finding a new meaning or interpretation which is what the JMDL does so well. Just the other day someone on the Line, Jim of course, talking about +ACI-A diamond for her throat+ACI-. I'd never really thought about it like that before .... Justice - Just Ice. Throat, not neck. The implications. Imagery with words. For me, my fave +ACI-poetry+ACI- by Joni is the song DJRD. I adore it. So-o-o-o many creative images from the eagle and the snake juxtaposed. Awesome. And, there's that driving rhythm/beat building alongside Jaco's punching and punctuated bass. This John Mayall painting is one of his that appears in the book STARART. In STARART the painting is untitled - dated 1966. Trying to piece the "Joni's favorite" tag on it, I'm wondering, since Joni was a part of STARART along with Mayall, Cat Stevens, Klaus Voormann, Ron Wood and Commander Cody, is it the painting itself that was *Joni's favorite* of Mayall's contributions to the book?? My guess, like Debra's, is the seller is just fabricating a story to try to make a sale! I just went through John Mayall's commentary throughout STARART and the thing that I find that would dispell it being our Joni in the painting, is that this painting was done in 66 while Mayall says "he first came to America in 1968". So, after reading through Mayall's section, I just don't buy it being our Joni, cuz for one, she's not mentioned in any of his book text (or he in her's), two, he wasn't in the States yet, and three, Joni was still a relative unknown on the coffee house circuit at the time (66). This print, may have been the eqivalent of the print Joni offered, "Charley Down In Mexico", for sale by order to STARART in Canada, back when the book first came out. I remember I found the offer in the back of Rolling Stone and only bought the CDIM print, for about $30 if I recall correctly, but one from each artist was available, each with the same price tag. Julius, What a neat find! Of course I also pulled out my STARART early this a.m. and checked it out. I agree with Debra and Penny that 1966 is probably too early for him to have known Joni and the lady in the painting looks a little more ah, "mature" than Joni did at the time. Joni moved to L.A. in very late '67. What is curious is that Mayall provides a narrative for all of his other works in the book except this "Untitled" one. Interestingly, there is another gouache in the book entitled "House in Laurel Canyon," dated 1971. The house, however, does not appear to be Joni's - it's too big and slapdash modern where Joni's was more turn-of the-century bungalow from what I've seen in the Diltz photos. But his rendering in the Laurel Canyon painting does seem to embody the typical post-war rustic "cabins" that sprung up in the canyons of L.A. Mayall is a very great artist, IMO, and I used to be absolutely crazy for his music in the 60s. I think you should try to win the print, Julius! Even though it is probably not artist quality, it still would have some worth because there probably aren't that many copies around. Penny - it was interesting ro read that one could get some of the prints, including "Charlie in Mexico" from a form in Rolling Stone back then! Argh - I subscribed to RS back then and missed it!! I think your print probably has increased in value, too. Yeah, I might have been observant, but I was still an idiot for NOT spending the whole extra 15 bucks, or whatever it was, and getting one of the signed and numbered ones! Sheesh, what a moron! LOL Been thinking about why and how that Mayall painting could now bear a *Joni's Favorite* title. Still it would have to have been titled well after the fact, but since STARART came out around the same time Joni was with Don Alias, maybe that's why the painting caught her eye - and became her favorite?? Greetings everyone! Most of you probably don't know me but I've been a member of the list since the early days. I spend most of my time in lurk mode, but I try to stay current, and for the most part, greatly enjoy being a part of this wonderful community. It was exactly for that reason that I agreed to participate in the Joni print fund raiser that is currently going on for both the JMDL and jonimitchell.com. As you hopefully know, aside from paying for the actual printing, all proceeds from the sale of these pictures are going to the websites. I would like to thank everyone that's already purchased one of these prints, and I hope you are enjoying it. Everytime you look at it, you should smile knowing that you contributed to keeping this great community alive. Now for the contest. As my way of thanking everyone who purchased one of the prints, and for all you lucky Festers who received one from Ashara last fall, I am sponsering a little contest. For you stragglers who have been meaning to help out by buying one of these pictures - fear not - the contest won't start until February 21, 5 weeks from today, so you still have plenty of time to send in your payment and participate in this little event! Currently there are three prizes that I will be giving out, but I'm hoping to dig up a few more treasures before the contest begins. Current prizes are an unopened copy of the Grace of My Heart soundtrack with the rare Joni version of Man From Mars on it, an unopened VHS tape of Refuge of the Roads, and a hand colored version of the Joni print. If anyone has any other Joni items they would like to donate as prizes, the more the merrier. The concept of the contest is this - on February 21, at approximately 8:00pm CST, I will send an email to the List containing a series of questions that can only be answered by referring to the Joni drawing. For those of you in digest mode, if you send me an email ahead of time, I will also email the questions directly to you at the same time, so no one has an advantage. Some of the questions will be pretty simple, but some of them will be a little devious! The first people to send me the correct answers will win the prizes. Because someone might already have one of the items, the winners will get to pick their prize, based on the sequence that I receive their replies. It's that simple! If you have any questions regarding this, please feel free to email me at Merk54@aol.com Once again, the questions won't go out until February 21, so if you haven't made your purchase yet, get busy! And for all of you who have already got your pictures, mark your calendars for February 21st! And thanks again for helping keep these wonderful sites up and running.
