All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu BTW, in tonight's episode 1 of "Jazz", they talked about an early player (who happened to be a black man) who turned down the opportunity to become the first artist to record Jazz. He was afraid that others would copy his licks. Instead the honor went to some white guy who claimed not only that whites invented Jazz, but that black people _couldn't play Jazz correctly_! I couldn't stop laughing because it was so preposterous. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 00:38:10 +1300 From: "hell" Subject: My first CD I've just successfully created my first Joni compilation CD, and thought maybe people might be interested in my choices. It's really a collection of my favourite slow songs - I'm heading up to my sister's beach house next week, and there's nothing quite like falling asleep to a slow Joni tune with the doors wide open and the surf rolling in the background (is anyone jealous yet?). I'm also planning a compilation of more "upbeat" Joni tracks, but it may be smaller! I also don't have STAS or Clouds on CD, so they weren't an option: Little Green Blue River The Last Time I Saw Richard Woman Of Heart And Mind The Hissing Of Summer Lawns Amelia Refuge Of The Roads Chinese Cafe Night Ride Home Cherokee Louise Two Grey Rooms Sunny Sunday The Magdalene Laundries Love Puts On A New Face Stay In Touch Face Lift Tiger Bones Hell P.S. I was very surprised when I got to a page with the title, "Living Legends" and saw a picture of Joni! There's a really nice composite picture of: Eric Clapton, a Diana Ross, Sting, Bonnie Raitt and a beautiful picture of Joni. The caption next to the picture reads, "Legends like Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, Diana Ross, and Bob Dylan were among the icons who spent much of the last decade confirming that when it comes to making quality music, age ain't nothing but a number." I've got a cold which I've been fighting off tooth'n'nail for a week now; at last, it would seem I've lost the battle (hopefully, the buildup of echinacea will ensure a brief illness!). Seeing snow always inspires me to listen to Hejira, which is on my turntable now. I was not surprised to read in one of the JM companion interviews that "Song For Sharon" was written while high on cocaine - this whole album has that sort of feel to me, only reinforced by the cover art. Though I'm no advocate of drug use, after all it took me down the WRONG road, but it's interesting to see the amazing results using drugs sparingly can bring to one's art. So often we only get to see what happens to the creative process when substance abuse takes over and the well of imagination starts to dry up. I think Hejira frames up a special time of transition for Joni, and the flourishes of chemical stimulation are quite complimentary. Man, it's nice to see how active and interesting it is, and you all are. One question I must ask. I've been reading about some Joni CD's (good quality bootlegs?) here on this list of which I'm not aware - one in particular mentioned was a double CD of Joni back in her early days in Detroit, and I believe New York. Can someone(s) please let me know how I can get hold of these? I'd LOVE to have such gems in my CD collection!! I'm also a collector of Joni video's on Laserdisc (the 12" shiny silver ones) or DVD - I do not collect Video tapes because the quality is poor. I've just been fortunate to acquire a Japanese import DVD of Shadows & Light to go along with my old Laserdisc copy. I'm looking for a Laserdisc (in good condition) of "Refugee of the Road". It was a 1984 Pioneer release. Sadly, my copy was broken in half accidentally by a dear friend who did not look before she leaped. I am also seeking information about, and likely a copy of a Joni Laserdisc entitled "Come In From The Cold" (?), a Laserdisc that somehow has escaped my discover until just recently. Any help from the group on these matters will be greatly appreciated!! Its called "Joni Mitchell: Shadows and Light" and will be published by Virgin Books in October this year and distributed internationally. I see it as a reappraisal of Jonis hugely influential body of work , which I think has so often been undervalued or misunderstood, and a celebration of her music and her visual art . It is not an authorised biography but is being done with the full knowledge of Joni and her management; Joni has been very kind and allowed members of her close circle to talk to me including Larry Klein and Graham Nash. The only bad thing he had to say was that Burns tends to repeat that Armstrong was the creator of Jazz, over and over, in every single episode, for 18 hours. (Gulp.) He also mentioned that Burns dismisses major talents "who don't make it into his pantheon" with a 10 minutes examination. The reviewer mentioned that Ella Fitzgerald is treated like this.>> I thought Burns and company did a superlative job on Jazz part 1. I was riveted, and I respect that they didn't attempt to circumvent or sugar-coat the role racial dynamics played in the evolution of Jazz and American culture overall. But in my mind the best thing about watching the Burns' documentary was that it got me tuned in to PBS to see Susan Lacy's "American Masters" series documentary on the great Ella Fitzgerald, which directly followed it on my local affiliate. Two hours of uninterrupted musical documenatary bliss. A comprehensive retrospective on this incomparable singer's life and career. Tears streamed down my face when they showed Ella singing "Summertime (and the living is easy)" in the mesmerizing way that only she can. They showed most all the performance segments in their entirety, which was fabulous. Ella singing and dancing with Jimmy Durante, Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Bing Crosby, Mel Torme. Ella scat singing in a call and response challenge with a muted trombone virtuoso. It was the best television I've ever seen in my life, bar none. Keep in mind that the same PBS "American Masters" series, executive produced by Susan Lacy, has a segment on our beloved Joni in the works. This is the first time I have written. I am young for the typical Joni Mitchell fan I guess. Most of my friends have only heard of her because of the woodstock footage that is shown every couple years on Much Music, so needless to say I don't play her albums at parties much. However, she did, infact become the soundtrack to my life.We were doing a poetry unit in class and my teacher brought the lyrics to "Case of you" out and we studied her for a few weeks. In a nutshell, Blue changed me. Two summers ago, when I was in my last year of high school, I took a trip with my philosophy class to Italy. That was around the time when I discovered Blue, among many other records that my parents have in the basement of my house. I relate with everything she is saying in Carey. I understand completely who the woman is in the last time I saw Richard, which coincidentally is my favourite song on the planet. I find that the entire album was sort of a release. It is a soundtrack for the wandering spirit. In my humble opinion. I have noticed that there is a lot of Radiohead conversation going on with the mailing list too. For Patrick, I think (?) if you are at all interested in Thom Yorke, there are many more bands he has worked with besides PJ Harvey. REM, Bjork, UNKLE, the posies, sparklehorse...I believe that he is one of the most gifted musicians I have ever heard, and it is amazing that I would find the two most important people musically in my life on the same discussion mailing list. As Hell mentioned, Crosby, while still in the Byrds, did a few gigs with the Buffalo Springfield, starting with Monterey. The rest of the Byrds got real mad at him for "moonlighting" and it contributed to him being thrown out of the band later in '67. I recently ordered the Monterey Pop box set but was really disappointed that it did not include the Buffalo Springfield set there. Hell quoted this from the Crosby bio: > I couldn't resist a good hook. I started hanging out with the Buffalo > Springfield. The Springfield had a short half-life, about a year > (March '67 - May '68). Before they finally came apart, they asked me to be > in the band. I went up to Monterey to play with them; I was a Springfield > for a short while." I saw them perform at my high school in August '67, and have always had this recollection (which may be wrong) that Crosby played with them there, too. They actually did a "tour" of several high schools in LA County that year (those were the days) and I know others who saw them that summer in their schools. Now for some possible Joni content - I've recently heard a tidbit from a very good source regarding the long-awaited Buffalo Springfield box set that there may be some songs (perhaps live or outtakes, etc.) included on it where Joni sings back-up. If this is true, it would be an incredibly fantastic find. Considering her long friendship with Neil and that Crosby brought her out to LA in late '67, it could be possible that she sang with them on a few occasions. Mark wrote re Burns' Jazz: >But there were some great performances from the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival from the likes of Anita O'Day, > Dinah Washington, Big Maybelle, Chuck Berry, Gerry Mulligan, Thelonius > Monk, Jack Teagarden & Mahalia Jackson. I've seen the entire footage of Anita O'Day at Newport and it is amazing. She has it playing on a large screen during her breaks while performing at the Atlas here.
