If you live in the USA you have a 1 in 27 chance of winning and if you live anywhere else in the world your chances are 1 in *3*!!! I have to get the names onto little pieces of paper and then find two hats (or use one hat twice) but first I have to prepare a dish for the brunch we're having tomorrow morning. I will hurry as fast as I can and promise to have everything done as soon as possible. Happy New Year to all. 2001!!! Harder to get my head around than 2000. Ranger Rick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 02:25:12 -0800 From: susan+rick Subject: The Real New Millennium Joni Giveaway Winners (To the sound of a kettle drum crescendo in the background) First let me thank all who participated in this contest. The final tally was 30 entries: 27 from North America (all from the USA actually) and 3 from everywhere else. It was a treat to be able to do it. And now, the official winners as drawn from my Ranger Stetson by my lovely wife Susan (N.A.) and my son Illya (the world): North American Winner: Janine Sherman of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The World Winner: Wally Kairuz, our very own Birthday Fairy from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Thanks again friends. I wish I had enough copies to distribute to everyone who wanted one. Hoping everyone gets all the best the new year has to offer. Rick ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 03:08:55 -0800 From: "Kakki" Subject: Happy New Year! My party just ended after much champagne from many countries, good friends and many hugs and kisses. I wish you all were here. Much love to all of you as we start the new year. I want to wish you a happy new year. Take care until I shall return to the list in February. Marian from Vienna promised to come along with her guitar. I shall repeat this invitation when I get back from the hospital in Wiesbaden in February. Love from Karin in Germany ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 13:13:49 -0600 From: Richard Rice Subject: The Cranston controversy. Cheeze heads unite!!! It appears Toller Cranston has thrown down the gauntlet regarding where the famed, beloved Hejira cover was shot. The line is drawn, let the flames commence. As do the cheeze heads, I believe Madison Wis. was the place. Obviously, we need to send an investigative team to both locations and finally bring an end to this. We could take cameras and find the sacred spot and cast all charlatans away! Or perhaps someone here capable of contacting Joel Bernstein or Norman Seeff? Certainly dyed in the wool Joni Fanatics like ourselves cannot go through life being mis-informed about an important bit of information as this. Where o where was this glorious Joni cover taken? I wonder if she's worn her crow outfit since? John. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 12:10:43 -0800 From: Louis Lynch Subject: Harpy New Year All on the list, Have a happy and prosperous 2001. Last night, at one of my First Night concerts, I was introducing "Beggars to God," a marvelous tune by Bob Franke that I love to play. The chorus goes: Make love to each other Be free with each other Be prisoners of love until you lie in the sod. Be friends to each other Forgive one another See God in each other, be beggars to God... I'm just as wordy when I'm performing as when I'm e-mailing, so I tend to pause between songs for introductions and explanations and silly jokes and such. Before I sang Beggars to God, I had this crazy idea to ask the audience who was there with someone they loved. They all raised their hands, of course, because who spends New Years Eve with people they don't love? So I told them before I played the song, I wanted everyone to look at the person or people they were with and say "I love you." Some of them looked a little shocked, so I acted real bossy and yelled at the crowd, "Do it! Right now! C'mon people, let's hop to it. You there, sir, I don't see your lips moving. Say it!!!" (I do corny stuff like that in my shows sometimes, although the "I love you" schtick just came to me at that moment.") They had no other choice, really. After my concert, this camo-man came up to me -- a burly, bearded, deer hunting, flannel shirt wearing, steak eating kind of guy wearing an authentic John Deere baseball cap with gold oak leaves on the brim. (Central PA's fashion statement.) He shook my hand and told me that he really liked my little "say I love you" thing and keep up the good work. He said he never thought about it before but it is something we all need to hear more. So, everyone on the list, turn to the person or people you love and tell them so. Do it! Say it! Right now! Prayers and regards for all. Harper Lou ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 16:34:02 EST From: BRYAN8847@aol.com Subject: Joni book cheap on amazon (Forgive me if this has been posted before.) I know many of us are not wild about this book -- but Complete Poems and Lyrics (hardcover) is available for just $5.99 plus s/h on amazon.com. I couldn't resist adding it to my Joni collection at such a reasonable price. I think they're selling the few remaining hardcover editions (or perhaps trying to unload zillions of them, I don't know), but if you're interested, jump on it. Bryan ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Jan 2001 21:52:27 -0300 From: "Wally Kairuz" Subject: jmdl dream vjc i had [YET] another jmdl dream last night. we were having a jonifest. bob murphy was there. and yes, MICHAEL PAZ WAS THERE TOO, playing a NEW joni mitchell song on the piano!!!! kakki, magsie, brian, and i were reading from michael's music sheet [one of those xeroxes he always plays from at jonifests] and singing along. we seemed to know the song pretty well, although it was still not on any cd. when i woke up i could still remember some of the words, a refrain. and then i forgot them completely... michael paz, will you stop crowding all my jmdl dreams, please? wally NP-Kind Woman-Buffalo Springfield (on Radio SonicNet michaelpaz station) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 20:43:02 -0500 From: "Diane Evans" Subject: here's to you Karin, You'll be in Wiesbaden? Isn't there some pretty good skiing there? Now, wait, is the hospital stay an inevitable trip after daring runs down the slopes?:-) Seriously, I hope nothing is terribly wrong, that you have to stay in the hospital so long. I'll think good thoughts for you and throw in a couple prayers, too! I especially like "You turn me on,I'm a vibrator". ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Jan 2001 22:21:36 -0500 From: BarBearUh Subject: the year in music (extremely little JC) i thought last year was a bad music year - this year was pitiful! i've never been so stumped to think of my favorite new releases, and i realize it's cause there are so few of them that impressed me in a big way. so, here goes... 1. youssou n'dour - joko. this guy plays some of the world's best pop music. great beats, great musicianship with lots of different sounds, and a voice that is indescribable. this is as good or better than anything he's done. also one of the best live acts i've ever seen, and consistently so (6 shows i've seen over 12 years have all been amazing) 2. emmylou harris - red dirt girl. the great interpreter proves she can be an auteur, too. excellent songwriting. plus i just love her live - she comes across as a real person, down to earth, ego bridled, soul involved in her craft. 3. jane siberry - hush. as a whole, this album can feel a little redundant. it is all traditional songs interpreted by jane, arranged as a jane chorus. the arrangements are unique, lush and 80-90% layers of jane's voice. what puts it over the top is that her versions of "jacob's ladder" and "all through the night" could make you weep. it's so cool hearing the subtle differences in the different vocal tracks. there's also a children's song called "false false fly" that i've never heard before and she brings that sib-signature combination of quirky soulfulness and childlike playfulness to it just beautifully. 4. toshi reagon - the righteous ones. this one was released in 1999, but i didn't get it til the spring, after i saw her perform on a whim while stuck in minneapolis for the weekend (great town, BTW). she was just explosive. joan armatrading meets ani difranco - folk/blues/soul with attitude. there are a couple of ballads on here that are just stunning - she's got great chops. 5. i don't really have one. pj harvey's 'stories' might be one, but it hasn't completely sunk in yet. i just got teddy thompson's record a couple of months ago(son of richard). i haven't paid enough attention to it to give it real accolades, but my first impressions were quite good. it was produced by joe henry, whom i also haven't spent enough time with. i'm not a big fan of richard's, so this sounds better to me than his dad (i think he plays some guitar on it, BTW). love Rickie Lee Jones' take on 'low spark of high-heeled boys', though the album didn't take me by storm. BSN also didn't do it for me, though i completely dug the new version of 'both sides now', a song i haven't been fond of since i was about 10 years old. also haven't soaked up radiohead's "kid a" yet, but initial response is give me some "bends". some releases from last year that are still spinning - bruce cockburn's "breakfast in new orleans, dinner in timbuktu", ani difranco's "to the teeth" and last year a friend gave me billy bragg & wilco's guthrie thang "mermaid avenue" & that is sinking in like a stone (a 98 release). new blues discovery: corey harris, who is very taj mahal-like in approach. i've had three addictive phases this year - van morrison, especially 'the healing game' and 'no guru no method no teacher'; kate bush, especially 'the red shoes' and 'sensual world' and i had cassandra wilson's 'blue light 'til dawn' in the player for about 2 months solid (a very long time for me). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2001 03:32:11 +0000 From: Jason Maloney Subject: Re: the year in music (extremely little JC) I bought Shea Seger's CD The May Street Project today, on a whim..and because a lister included it in their year-end picks..I think it was Azeem? Great album, and in the sale at HMV as well :-) Still got to post my faves of 2000, but there is something to that effect already up at my website - http://www.the-slipstream.co.uk I thought about copying it into an e-mail, but I don't know if that would be relevant ;-) Happy New Year to one and all.... This CD features a number of songs that they sing together and seperately: Both Sides Now I Still Miss Someone The Gallery Long Black Veil California My Old Man Girl From The North Country This disc also has the complete Last Waltz set, a nice version of Joni singing "Tambourine Man" and "Both Sides Now" with Pete Seeger, where Pete adds his own original verse.
