Brilliant though Bjork is, equal credit must go to arranger Vince Mendoza, whose rich, romantic orchestrations also made Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" something more than an arch concept album. Nice to see another Joni mention in a NZ publication! I guess Judy Collins cover of Both Sides Now would have been my earliest introduction to Joni's work, and 1 of my earliest records was 'Blue', which was quickly followed by 'Ladies of the Canyon'. I bought subsequent records pretty much as soon as they were available until 'Hissing of Summer Lawns', which I found disappointing after the amazing 'Court and Spark'. Years passed. What with working in the Middle East for 4 years and living in abject poverty for several more years following a financially disastrous divorce, I lost touch with Joni's music. I still played the records that I had but never had the money or the inclination to get any of her newer stuff. Time has a wonderful way of healing things, and I now find myself happily remarried and living in Delaware, USA. Living in the States has given me the opportunity of surfing the Web easily and cheaply, and I soon joined Internet discussion lists for various interests, one of which was the Roy Harper list. A friend on that list pointed me towards the Richard Thompson list, and someone on that list pointed me to the Joni list just before Christmas (Hi Debra). And that, as they say, is that. My first and only Joni CD is 'Blue' which I bought a couple of months ago. Coincidentally, soon after getting it, I was pleased to catch the recent Joni tribute program (alas my video recorder let me down). I'm hoping to get a few more Joni CD's as funds allow in 2001. I'm very happy to finally catch up with news of one my earliest heroes. Cheers, Ian Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. Just curious, what did you find disappointing about HOSL, especially in context of Court & Spark? The lack of piano, perhaps? I'm certainly not insinuating that you're not welcome to your opinion, because you surely are. Just wondering what specifically turned you off with HOSL... Thanks for joining up, looking forward to hearing more from you, and boy do you have some great works in store for you if HOSL is when you stopped with Joni! :~) Bob in South Carolina NP (Now Playing): The Platters, "The Great Pretender" - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. It's so good to see you here. Nice introduction. This is definitely the place to reconnect with Joni's music in many different ways. Have you listened to Hissing lately? Yippee! I made it over the firewall! :~) Secondly, I was reading the liner notes to an R&B CD I was listening to, and thought I'd share this bit of trivia, seeing that Joni sang this song on Shadows & Light... "Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers personified doo-wop, perhaps the most delightful genre of the hot new rock 'n' roll sound. Lymon was just 13 when the group cut "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" in 1955 after being discovered on a Harlem street corner by Richard Barrett of The Valentines, a doo-wop group. Barrett fixed them up with his own label boss, George Goldner of Gee. The song was originally a love poem written to Teenager Sherman Garnes' neighbor titled "Why Do Birds Sing So Gay". Goldner revised it, and Lymon sang lead because vocalist Herman Santiago was ill that day. Released right after Christmas, the record burned up the charts in 1956. Lymon's rise & fall was meteoric & tragic; in 1968, 11 years after his final top-40 hit, he died of a drug overdose in a friend's Harlem apartment." I remember the first time I heard Joni sing it, and thinking how appropriate a choice it was for her!
