I also watched High Fidelity over the weekend. That led me to this subject. They are as I remember, not necessarily in chronological order: 1. Wally B. 2. Watching Anne Sandstrom get better. 3. BSN and BSN Concert Reviews 4. TNT Tribute 5. Saturday Morning and Friday Night listers - two very different groups. 6. Kenny Grant 7. Dark Secrets 8. Ethridge, Cypher, Crosby 9. Bush - Gore 10. They might be top because of their ugliness...or the particular tension they created. Or just cause I really liked the sound of them, as opposed to the particular thread they were speaking to. My only ground rule was that the sayings came from list posts or verbal sayings, as long as they were said infront of another jmdler, so as not to cite private communications. Off list comments don't count, unless they were posted to the list by someone else. 1. Yuck and fuck you. - Patrick Leader 2. Eat shit and die. - Paul I. 3. Unlike Paul I., you have no redeeming qualities. - Wally Bear 4. It's the frigging Grinch, not Das Boot. - Evian 5. Son of Pig. - Scam Sue 6. We'll make it worth your while. - Amy and Kelly (Paz, eat your heart out) 7. Isn't Joni Mitchell great? ( in reference to vincent and the kitchen table) Sem8 Sue 8. Happiness is the best face lift - Mark in Seattle. Honorable mention: A. I am your angel - Ondulees Susan LA. Yes, you are! B. Rimming - Lori in DC. Lori, I had to ask Colin what it meant. The sampling rate is higher than that of a "normal" CD. Now, the audiophiles will probably tell you that, without a CD player that has the higher sampling rate D/A converter, you won't hear that much of a difference on a "regular" CD player. But since I'm a mere mortal, I will say that in the process of creating HDCD, the original source tapes are digitally remastered. This, in itself, produces a usually much clearer, cleaner and more defined soundstage vs. the original CD release of a given album. The main reason for this is that, when CD was "brand new", a great many releases were sloppily and hastily digitized to fill the product void. The Fleetwood Mac catalog is notoriously atrocious in this regard -- but the Joni HDCD reissues are uniformly superior, again, at least in these normal everyday guy's ears. Hope this helps. HDCD (High Definition Compatible Digital) is a patented encode/decodeprocess for delivering on Compact Discs and DVD-audio the full richness and detail of the original microphone feed. "HDCD Becoming Popular Standard" -- Billboard Magazine Over 2,000 HDCD recordings have been made by leading mastering studios around the world. More than 150 HDCD recordings have appeared on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and over 80 HDCD recordings have been nominated for Grammy Awards.(View a list of the HDCD Grammy nominees in 1998, 1999, and 2000). "Everything everybody was complaining about digital, HDCD cures." -- The New York Times HDCD encoded CDs sound better because they are encoded with 20-bits of real musical information, as compared to 16-bitsfor all other CDs. HDCD overcomes the limitation of the 16-bit CD format by using a sophisticated system to encode the additional four bits onto the CD while remaining completely compatible with the existing CD format. HDCD provides more dynamic range, a more focused 3-D soundstage, and extremely natural vocal and musical timbre. With HDCD, you get the body, depth and emotion of the original performance -- not a flat, digital imitation. "With HDCD, digital officially races ahead of analog in a way anyone can hear, not just golden-eared audiophiles." -- Rolling Stone Magazine HDCD recordings will always sound better than conventional CDs when played on any CD player. You will hear fuller, richer sound on all types of players, from portables to high-end systems. This is why so many top artists and engineers use HDCD. To bring out the full bandwidth and superb fidelity of HDCD recordings, a player with HDCD decoding should be used. You will be amazed by the dynamic range and resolution produced by decoded HDCD recordings. "...HDCD is a significant advancement in digital audio sound quality." -- Fi Magazine Pacific Microsonics' PMD-100 audio chip, which includes HDCD decoding and HDCD filtering, is a world wide standard in high fidelity audio systems with over 100 models of HDCD equipped players now available from leading consumer electronics companies like Denon, Harman Kardon, Rotel, and Toshiba. Recently, leading audio chip manufacturers, including Analog Devices, Burr Brown, Motorola, Sanyo, and Zoran licensed the same HDCD technology used in the PMD-100 todevelop HDCD chips for the general audio market. These new chips will be used in a wide range of playback products such as DVD players, A/V receivers, Mini-Component systems, MiniDisc players, and CD players, changers and portables. And, best of all, the HDCD decoder chip used in consumer products also contains the HDCD high precision digital filter which improves the sound quality of all types of digital audio recordings. This means that any A/V receiver, CD player, DVD player and Mini Discplayer equipped with HDCD will produce significantly better sound from your entire collection of CDs, DVDs and MDs. I can't stand Letterman but as you are going to the show could you please give Mr Clooney my telephone number and tell him I want a shag? I am free any week day between 8am Monday and 5pm Friday. Tell him to come as he is, just call first. i'd hate to be out if he arrived unexpectedly. Oh and not between the 21st and the 2nd Jan cos John is off work then. I don't want him to know. If he can't make it, ask him to pass my number on to Bruce or Keanu or Nicholas. > > how lucky am i? > very lucky, she replied. very lucky indeed. > take care all, > alison e. in nyc > > --- SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > > << But last night's "blood and > > peanut butter" reference to Joni was at least his > > THIRD recently. >> > > > > Do you think he's picking up on Joni's themes of > > duality here? > > Bob > > > > NP: May Chapin-Carpenter, "Come On, Come On" > Yahoo! I lived in NYC for four years and tried to get Letterman tickets for about two years. When I finally got them, I was sent away on a shoot and had to give the tickets to a couple of friends. And the musical guest that night was Lou Reed, who would have been my second choice - -- after Joni, of course. I had to spend the night of that show on a far-flung tropical island with a whining, spoiled and uncooperative Andre Agassi, which was no fun at all. Am I bitter? Yes! Really, I am completely red in the face and nervously laughing. I was going to say you made my day, but it's more like you made my month. Thanks so much for listening, but more importantly for really listening, for getting what I was going for. I placed the song "Salt Water" exactly where it is because it was the shift into a different set of songs, the beginning of the comedown. And you are right -- it's the first song on the CD that goes deeper, is more honest. I had to honor Joni as the inspiration for this album because my guitar playing has a debt to her, especially in the first few songs I wrote which use some of the same tunings and have her penchant for drone strings. I hope someday to record another batch of songs. The latest ones are off in some direction even I didn't know about and I am using my pinkie more -- Most of Joni's chords involve only 2 or three fingers. It's the right hand which is the tough part when you try and play her songs. Man, I can't thank you enough for your kind words! I recorded these songs hoping that someone might pay attention, and your response made me feel that all the time, money, and nearly violent fights with the producer were worth it. I would also encourage every one on this list who ever wanted to record his/her music to do it, for yourself if no one else. It's one of the best things I have ever done for myself and very satisfying to know someone else "gets it."
