But I'm having great difficulty with the meaning of words in your post. What is volition? What is objective (the adjective)? How can a value be objective? How can your "one objective value" be something so few people, at least in the northwest quarter of the globe, actually practice? The "value" that says "don't seek to dominate and control others" seems to me at best a RECOGNITION that humans have an innate drive to dominate and control others. The "value" signifies that somewhere we find this drive unattractive in itself and tragic in its consequences. What makes us human, completely contrary to what you say, IMO, is that we possess something that mediates between desire and the taking of actions to fulfill that desire. What was Ayn Rand's view of the Freud's writings on neurosis, by the way? Hey Chris, CD burners are much better at extracting audio to the hard disk than the internal CD drive. It's possible when whoever converted the DAT or cassette to CD, they had the levels too high which created clipping (compared to distortion on analog sources, where saturation occurs, the highs are clipped on digital sources). I don't know what to say, but try cleaning the disc, I find a dust cloth or washing the disc in a dish detergent/warm water mixture to be the best. Try cleaning the laser on your stereo and discman. If all else fails, extract the audio to your hard disk from your burner, and reduce your extract speed to 1x. This will minimize any pops or clicks. Hope this helps! Also, and I think this may be the culprit: make sure you are using very good quality cables, like Monster. They make a huge difference in the sound quality. Make sure your connections are good too, no dust or dirt in the cable or the RCA jacks. Since this is the birthday greeting that brought the biggest smile to my (gasp!) 47 year old face, I really do need to come out of lurker mode, and even add some Joni content to the message. First, Wally, you're a sweetheart to compare me to Napoleon Brandy. Though I guess it's a very aged brandy, isn't it? But on to the Joni content. My sister, Karen, called me last week to say she was going to see k.d. lang in Denver, and because Karen's new beau knows her pedal steel player, she'd get to go backstage. I asked her if his name is Greg Liesz, and she asked me how I knew, and I said Greg Liesz had played with Joni on TTT and PWWAM and was in the band when Karen flew to LA for one night in '98 to see Joni, Van and Dylan at Pauley Pavilion with me. Anyway, when Karen met Greg, she told him she had seen him 2 years ago when he played with Joni at Pauley Pavilion. She said his face lit up and he became very animated, and told her playing with Joni was different than playing with anyone else, because Joni is truly an artist and instead of giving him specific instructions about what she wanted, she encouraged him to be creative and make his own contribution when he played with her. But, thanks again, Wally, you birthday angel. Andy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 16:13:51 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@fluor.com Subject: Best of 2000 VLJC & Long I suppose it's time to round up those "Top 10" lists for the year's best tunes. And I'll get to that, but I'll get the easy one out of the way first...the year's best movies. I don't think there's ever been a worse year for films. Maybe some of the late December releases will give the Academy enough choices for some Oscar picks, but it HAS been pretty bleak & weak. My faves: 1. Chuck & Buck 2. Wonder Boys 3. Eyes of Tammie Fay (not sure if this is officially a 2000 release or not) Now, on to the music, and happily this was a superb year for new music. Whittling down from the discs I bought this year was VERY tough, and sadly many didn't make my top 10 but are still excellent records. Here's my 10, in alphabetical order, not in order of preference. It would be impossible for me to do that as I couldn't pit any of these against the other: 1. Erykah Badu, "Mama's Gun": This is a fine if not overly long awaited follow up to Baduizm. She could've played it safe and made Baduizm II but instead she branches out all over the place. Some of these selections sound like Billie Holiday singing Stevie Wonder songs. Imagine how sublime that would be and you have a sense of the beauty of this record. 2. Brian Blade Fellowship, "Perceptual": Between Brian's quiet leadership, truly outstanding musicianship and solos throughout, accessible melodies, and the skillful production of Daniel Lanois, this is one memorable disc. The highlight for me is "Steadfast" with the Joni vocal. Haunting as can be, it hints at how creative a partnering of Joni and Lanois would be. 3. Ani Difranco, "To The Teeth": My discovery (thanks to you guys) of the year! Ani is the Joni of her generation, with her lyrics ranging from light and humorous to poignant to enraged and sometimes all at the same time. Musically she's all over the map, introducing new colors and sounds on every track. This disc features rock, jazz, funk, hip-hop, and folk sounds and she makes every second of it work. And I love her guitar playing, she uses it almost as a percussion instrument sometimes! On the strength of this one, I bought about 7 more Ani's and none of them disappoint! 4. EmmyLou Harris, "Red Dirt Girl": EmmyLou proves herself to be an excellent songwriter as well as an interpreter of others' songs. Her songs here are all memorable, her singing is strong and sensitive, and her duet with Dave Mathews on "My Antonia" is simply beautiful. Trying to pick a favorite song on this one is tough because each song you hear seems to top the one you just heard! 5. Rickie Lee Jones, "It's Like This": Rickie recruits some crack talent; Joe Jackson, Ben Folds, Dan Hicks, Taj Mahal, and takes songs that are familiar yet instantly makes them her own. Great production, the various instrumental arrangements and sometimes sparse instrumentation (I LOVE just her voice with a stand-up bass) keeps the record fresh and surprising. "One Hand, One Heart" w/Joe Jackson is the duet of the year. 6. Shelby Lynne, "I Am Shelby Lynne": I've enjoyed this one all year long - she's been described as a cross between Dusty Springfield & Patsy Cline, and that's pretty accurate. Especially "Dusty in Memphis". My only complaint with this one is that it only runs a little over 30 minutes. The songs are all instantly likeable. Typically after hearing it, I give it a second run-through, and that's rare for me. She does some great Phil Spector wall of sound harmonies as well. 7. Radiohead, "Kid A": Rolling Stone described Thom Yorke's vocals as sounding like mercury, and that's pretty apt. I'm not sure what the "concept" of this record is, except that it's about alienation, or so I've been told. It's hypnotic and cryptic. It's rock, it's electronica, it's space music. It's Pink Floyd for the 21st century. And has anyone else discovered the booklet hidden under the disc holder? This record is derivative of nothing, and I'm curious to see where Radiohead will go next. 8. Patti Smith, "Gung Ho": This one was my #1 for a goodly portion of the year. Patti is at the top of her game, and this band rocks hard and seems to push her vocally even as her emotional vocals push back. "Strange Messengers" is one of the most moving things I heard this year, and in a perfect world would be a rock anthem like Stairway to Heaven & Free Bird. I'm a sucker for a powerful guitar hook and this disc is loaded with them. Of course, you know that lyrically Patti's gonna be on the mark, and she doesn't disappoint in that arena either. 9. Steely Dan, "Two Against Nature": Whodathunk the Dan was gonna make a "comeback" like this! It's like they fell asleep for 20 years, and woke up and decided to make a record on their own terms with no assimilating the last 20 years of pop music, and thank God for that! They're still writing about obscure things like "Gaslighting Abbie" and still playing the roles of the dirty leering uncles. Same clean guitars, same state of the art production. They don't show any signs of growth, but who cares when they can be this stellar! And congrats to them for landing their rightful spot in the R&R Hall of Fame! 10. XTC, "Wasp Star/Apple Venus Volume 2": This was the second collection of songs they've released since joining TVT records. Where AV1 was orchestral and more acoustic, this is more power-pop and "Black-Sea"-ish. And can these guys write hooks! "The Wheel & The Maypole" alone has more brilliant ideas than most artists come up with on an entire disc. Honorable mentions: Bubbling under the top ten, I have to mention these discs which didn't crack the top but are really fine nonetheless: 1. Eels, "Daisies of the Galaxy" 2. Joan Osborne, "Righteous Love" 3. Paul Simon, "You're The One" 4. Elliott Smith, "Figure 8" 5. U2, "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (just haven't listened to it enough but it's probably top 10...a great return to form!) The classic definition of chutzpah has always been killing your parents and throwing yourself on the mercy of the court because you're an orphan. We now have a new one: stopping a recount until just before the deadline and then saying you can't recount because the deadline is too close or over. ____________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________ I thought I would preface this rant with the above statement by me. Well, now that this debacle is FINALLY going to come to an unceremoneous conclusion, I think it's time to look back a bit and ask what we have learned from this sham, and what will happen in the future. Before I begin, let me start by saying (as many of you have known from past rants {Phil}) that I can't stand either candidate for President, and did not put in a vote for either Candidate, but rather for another individual who will remain nameless (and might not be who you think). I do not affiliate myself with either Political Party (it's not worth receiving the junk mail from them). I have tried to remain objective throughout this entire thing, since watching History unfold in front of your eyes should not be done with colored glasses. If it appears from this that I tend to lean support towards one or the other, THAT IS ONLY HOW IT APPEARS!! I let the facts speak for themselves, and let the Devil be his own Advocate. Although it is true that both candidates agreed to abide by the laws set before the election, it is truly a sad state that the rules weren't changed well before this. It is sad that this is supposed to be a nation "By the People", yet the people's choice will not sit in the Oval office. It is sad that a Presidential Election is decided not by the people, but instead by a branch of the Government (doesn't this defeat the whole purpose of an election?). What's even more sad, is that it is decided by 2 branches of Government who until just now, couldn't even agree on how to screw the American public out of the process!!! It's pathetic that no matter which way this went, Republican or Democrat, justice would not be served. If Gore had won, then the "ex-post facto" of the laws would be invalidated, and Bush (who is the rightful winner by a technicality) would have his Presidency stolen. When Bush wins, Gore will also be correct that the will of the People will have been expressed, not not followed. It's pathetic that the Parties were allowed to drag this through the courts for eons longer than was prudent, under the "veil" of "due process". This should have been over, or at least decided, weeks ago. It's pathetic that the Florida Supreme Court didn't set clear and uniform, concise guidelines under which the recount was to take place. If they had, the US Supreme court would have had even less of a leg to stand on in sending the decision back (unsigned, I might add). What's more, it's pathetic that uniform guidelines were not in place before the Election started!!!!! It is horribly pathetic that in their ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court basically said that since the Dec. 12th deadline has/had now passed, that under Florida Law it appears that a recount cannot take place. However, if the Supreme Court hadn't put a stay on the recount over the weekend, or at least had heard the case over the weekend, the recount that has/had now passed deadline could have been done. By blocking the recount over the weekend, the U.S. Supreme Court essentially lesislated its own deadline not of Dec. 12th, but of Dec. 9th (the day they stopped the count). The recount could have occured before the deadline, but not under the newly created deadline. How is this due process??? It's sad that the choice of who would be the leader of the World (essentially), was decided by old, confused senior citizens that can't even read a ballot card, and who either: 1) punched for the wrong guy, or who; 2) for some reason, after God knows how many elections in which they voted in their LONG, LONG lives, thought it was "OK" to punch 2 holes!!! Then they wouldn't ask for help because they were scared?!?!? What are they, children!?!?!?. You know, children are not allowed to vote!!!! Why do you think that is?!? A main reason is they don't have the mental capacity (by means of maturity), to have a say in how things should be run. If you can't punch a hole correctly, or if you're to proud or scared to ask for help in this day and age, then you shouldn't vote!!!! Then this all would have been decided with Bush as the winner on Nov. 7th!!! It's truly saddening that the result of all this (and don't let anyone tell you otherwise), is that NOTHING is going to get done over the next 2-4 years, no matter who the President is going to be. And both sides will blame each other for the stalemates. Forget the fact that it will be ALL OF THEIR FAULTS for nothing getting done. When the next Election takes place, the Dems will say that nothing got done under a Republican presidency!!! The Republicans will blame the Dems for not allowing anything to get done!!! And once again, the cycle will repeat, and the American public will be the poor child watching its pathetic, dysfunctional parents argue, when both are wrong. Just shut the h e l l up and LEAD for Christ's sake!!!!! What's going to end up happening is that the next Election will have a HUGE turnout, the biggest we've ever seen, especially with the 18-24 group (some now 14-15). The advertising for getting the vote out will go non-stop for 4 years. This will be good for the Dems, since the majority of young people tend to be liberal, and people get more conservative as they get older. The Dems tend to be more liberal, and generally pull more of the young vote, anyway. MTV will probably play a large role in this. The Republicans know that this is a 4-and-out term, since nothing will get done, and the President has always taken the blame for inaction, regardless of whether or not the blame actually should fall to him. They also know that disenfranchised voters will turn out in droves next time, and alot of the 22-29 group that is always fed up with Government as it is, will vote for a change. That's what makes the US Supreme Court decision more pathetic. They know the Dems are going to take the office back, so Lady Justice took her blindfold off just this once so that a Republican could pack the Court with replacements. There is no other reason for stopping the recount on Friday. I don't necessarily disagree with the choice to not count the non-votes (if the Constitutionality of this issue needs to be analyzed, so be it), but once Florida said to recount all non-votes in the state, the US Supreme Court should have heard arguments over the weekend, to at least give a fighting chance for the recount to finish before Dec. 12th. To halt the count, to wait until the deadline comes to hear the argument, and then announce that it's too late seems like a coward's approach to Jurisprudence. It may not be their true intention, but it sure doesn't look good. Bottom line, Bush should win under the laws as they are now, he has my respect as our Commander-in-Chief to-be, but nothing more. Gore is DEFINITELY a shmoe, but RIGHTFULLY believes that most people wanted him to be the President. Democracy took a BIG hit in all this, since we finally showed the world that we are NOT a Democracy, but a Republic (and one that almost resembled a banana). A Republic works for the everyday goings-on of running things, but for a Presidential election, is as antequated and inefficient as the Combustion Engine (something that has served its purpose, but is due to step aside). To top it off, it is the most pathetic thing in the world that the American public is still not trusted enough to pick its own leader. Canadian passports, anyone?!?! Maybe Irish?!?!? Maybe Jupiter!?!?!? (i dont think that was a sentence!) she hated science, and one too many chemistry lectures left her apathetic towards the whole college experience. had she chose something like history i'm sure she would have fared much better. I just recently discovered this list via member of the Van Morrison Discussion List (Vanlist). As a novice in the world of webcrawling, cd burning etc. I was wondering if anyone would provide me with information on how to obtain the Joni Mitchell 4 disc tree listed on the website. I have some Van Morrison material to trade or perhaps I can persuade someone to do a B&P. In any event looking over the postings today it looks like a lively and fun group. Thanks for your time and I really appreciate your help in this.-- Regards, Michael H. _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. I'll be happy to set you up with that 4-CD tree. It's some pretty cool stuff. As for Van, my main man "Boston Jim" has pretty much set me up with all the Van I need! Anyway, contact me privately and we'll get going on the tree. That also goes for anybody who's interested in CD Tree #1 or any other Joni audio. No need to beg...we're a very sharing group! Again, welcome...look forward to hearing more from you! It was snowing in downtown Seattle when I was out & about this afternoon. Not enough to accumulate and the wind wasn't blowing much - just enough to look pretty coming down. 'Winter Wonderland' had floated through my head at one point but just as I was heading back to work, I started singing 'Hejira.' Has anyone else ever sung this song while walking through a snowfall? It was divine. What a wonderful, wonderful song to sing on a moody-sky-snow-gathering-like-bolts-of-lace kind of day. A reminder that there is a fundraiser going on right now. Please take a moment to go to this webpage and check it out: or: The fact is, I have a lot of money tied up in this particular fundraiser, and I need to recoup my money before the proceeds are split between the two sites. If you are interested in one or more of these incredible prints, please order them ASAP! They are really wonderful. If you would like to receive your print before the Holidays, I would need to have your check and order form by Tuesday, December 19th. Thanks!
