Hello to all you Bostonians, and Bostonian wanna-bes!! Our sweet, loveable, wonderful Roberto from Vancouver Island will be visiting our esteemed city the first week in January. The plan is to meet for dinner at Toscano's, Ric's favorite restaraunt on Charles street, at the foot of Beacon Hill at 7:00 PM. According to Ric, it is "gourmet Italian food to die for." Now personally, I for one, don't want to "die" over any kind of food, but this should be a WONDERFUL evening! Who's in? NY, NJ, RI, ME, NH, even CA- all close enough to join us!! ;-) Please e-mail Ric at: as soon as possible if you are planning to come so we can finalize reservations. Hugs, Ashara www.photon.net/lightnet P.S. Here's a dumb question...this *IS* the same For Free that's on LOTC, right? Does anybody have this record - if so, what do you think? The CD includes tracks by Eric Clapton ("Motherless Child"), Joni Mitchell ("For Free"), Me'Shell N'Degeocello ("God Shiva"), Chaka Khan ("Love Me Still"), Chris Isaak ("Eyes Of Texas"), Neil Young with Crazy Horse ("Music Arcade"), and Depeche Mode ("Condemnation"). And a chance to help out the Joni Mitchell Discussion List (JMDL) and Jonimitchell.com at the same time!! As most of you are already aware, the Joni Mitchell Discussion List (JMDL) and Jonimitchell.com are funded primarily by private means. In order to help defray some of these costs, a special fundraiser is being announced. Jack Merkel, a long time member of the JMDL (albeit mostly in lurk mode), has created some limited edition prints of a drawing he did of Joni Mitchell, and these prints are now being offered for sale to Joni fans through the JMDL and JoniMitchell.com. Jack has donated the art work, and aside from recouping the actual costs of printing the images, all proceeds will go directly to both the JMDL and Jonimitchell.com. The images are all 18" x 24", and they come in three different editions. All three editions were printed from an original mixed media drawing (pen and ink, and pencil). The image is basically a portrait of Joni, shown from the shoulders up. Through out the drawing are snippets of lyrics from Joni's songs. Two of the three editions are black and white, while the third edition is black on blue. The difference between the two black and white editions is mostly in the shading - the edition Jack has named Shadows, had more shading in it, while the edition named Light has very little shading. Each image is signed and numbered by Jack, and once the editions are sold out, no additional images will ever be printed. They are limited to these numbers: Shadows- 75 Blue- 25 Light- 90 While the images actually look fine just the way they are, Jack actually encourages people to have fun with them, and add their own artistic touches to them. For example, he kept a couple copies for himself, and has one tacked to an easle, with a box of colored pencils next to it. He then encourages friends to contribute to the drawing as they see fit. It's quite the conversation piece, and everyone seems to enjoy participating in the creative effort. Jack has also given copies to the children of one of his friends, and asked them to color them for him. When they are all done, he plans on displaying them Andy Warhol style. As a special treat, anyone who attended Ashara's JoniFest this past September, received an advanced copy of one of the prints. If you weren't lucky enough to attend, now is your chance to obtain one (or more!) of these images. So how much is all this going to cost? Only $20 for the first copy, and $15 for any additional copies ordered at the same time. There will also be a $5 shipping charge (slightly more if shipment is outside of the US). This $5 covers the cost of a shipping tube and the postage for up to 5 copies. So just think of it, for a mere $20 plus shipping, you help support jmdl.com and Jonimitchell.com, and you get an interesting portrait of Joni to hang on your wall. Why not buy several, and give them as gifts this Holiday season, or try having some fun with them like Jack recommends. My aim is to make this collection as easy as possible to get. With that in mind, there are several options: 1. Send me a blank CD. Now make sure that it is a MUSIC/AUDIO CD as opposed to a data CD. If it's not marked "Music" on the packaging, I won't be able to record on it. Also send me return postage so I can send the CD back to you. (That's the whole point, right? :~D) I can use whatever envelope or box you send them to me in to send them back to you. Hint: You save a little on postage if you send the CD ONLY without the jewel box(es). 2. If all that's just more hassle than you want to deal with, you can send me $5 which will cover the disc, the jewel box, the packaging & labeling, the padded mailer and postage back to you. If you want more than one, the cost drops to $3 per CD. This is because it costs less postage and packaging-wise to send multiple discs. And if you think I'm turning any profit, believe me, I ain't...not at $3 per. (Check or cash is OK) 3. OR, you can send me (2) blank CD's, I'll keep one to pay for packaging & mailing and send the other back to you full of Joni covers! 4. OR, if you have stuff to trade, I'm maybe up for that too! Any way you choose to go, PLEASE include a note reminding me what you want and your e-mail address in case I need to get in touch with you. And if all of this is clear as mud, feel free to contact me offlist and we'll work it out. Euro-jmdler's, John Van Tiel will be your branch and he should have his copy of #12 in a couple of days, so you can start bugging him anytime! :~) And remember, if you want FREE copies of future Covers volumes, all you have to do is supply a seed track. Here's how you can find out what we need: http://www.jmdl.com/covers/needed.cfm Thanks to all of you for helping to make the project fun & successful!
