"christian" music relates to songs which are straight out evangelical, or perhaps a personal reflection of the artists feelings regarding life in general, or frustrated musicians who cant make it in any other genre, or praise music, or solid rock'n roll from people who happen to believe in jesus, or people who were raised in church & just dont know any other life, or just plain crap ( here i am referring specifically to my opinion of bob carlyles "butterfly kisses" which is one of the very, very few songs which will cause me to "change the station") and can range from rap, to heavy metal, to blues, to folk, and even "gospel" there are lots of good christian artists out there. phil keaggy is one who springs to mind - he has made some of the guitar mags list of top 100 guitarists, and has released some very, very good albums. i would highly recomend him to any guitar music fan. other examples i can think of are phil driscoll, janny grein, andre de villiers, karen lafferty, susan ashton, margaret becker, and what about koinonia which has abraham laboriel on bass, and alex acuna ( rated by many as the worlds finest percussionist ) ok - i cant think of too many - but there some ... : ) even our very own james philips (a member of the michelle shocked list - i found the link to this group on his home page) plays in a church praise band........... perhaps you feel you have a good reason for "changing the station" but really it just sounds like the worst kind of blind prejudice. typically, i find that people shun christian music because they perceive christians in general to be harsh, judgemental & critical etc. so they respond in exactly the same manner & miss out on the genuine love and compassion,. which, while in very short supply most certainly does exist. "magdalene laundries" is a song that really touches me. it is so relevant to the church in so many aspects, and makes such a distinction between prejudiced christians (bloodless brides of christ) and christ - something which not many people who have been hurt by the church are prepared to do. in case youre wondering - no i dont go to church, or anything along those lines. i did spend two years at bible college after god touched my life & lifted my very heavy depression when i was on the brink of suicide. ron ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 08:36:25 EST From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Re: Bringing It All Back Home - JMDL style In a message dated 11/28/00 1:02:27 AM Eastern Standard Time, les@jmdl.com writes: << This is just my humble opinion, but I feel that all this election talk has taken on a rather distasteful tone. >> I couldn't agree with you more, Les. You can listen to Joni (and other artists you like) all day long! In fact, you can create your own 'radio station' by going to sonicnet.com, picking the artists you like (you have to select at least 60). You can rank them too, for example giving Joni 5 stars and someone you don't like quite as much anywhere from 0 to 4 stars. You can mix and match genres, too, which is really nice. My only complaint is that I can't seem to add Pierre Bensusan to my list. This isn't a commercial. I have absolutely no financial or other interest in this web site. What is so different now. >> What is so different now is that the outcome of the election may well hinge on those miscast and/or uncounted votes. In most elections there is a much wider margin and such votes do not alter the outcome. We are, after all talking about which of two men with vastly different beliefs and values will lead the country. No small matter, and there should be an accurate and full count of votes. I don't believe that has occured. In any case, given the number of ambiguous ballots and the tiny differential of five hundred odd votes out of millions cast, we really can't say with certitude that Bush is the clear and unequivocal victor in this election, can we? Further, if perforations in the ballots cannot be made cleanly by as you say, millions of people, I'd call that more than just "too bad"; not simply a case of voters unable to perform something "as simple as using that mechanism...". This election points to the need for a more accurate system of casting and counting. From the look of things that may be the only good thing that comes out of all this. I must disagree here. I am one of the people who dislike Red Hot Chili Peppers! I find them overly mannered and abit of a put on; very much in the vein of Korn etc. It appears to be about 'looks' rather than content. I am more of a fan of Faith No More. I know we had a similar discussion regarding Korn awhile ago and the incomparable Mr. Yarbourgh pointed out that there's nothing wrong with bands having fun (sorry, paraphrasing here big time) and yes I do agree, but I guess certain bands, artists just irritate me. I adored Prince but I admit, come "Diamonds and Pearls" I just had enough. So, stereotyping is unfair, and I could toss the phrase "Where logic ends, names begin." back to you, and I just have... for your consideration only. To steroeype "liberals" is name calling, and my friend, please don't. We do not have a "PC group" here if you mean something perjorative by that. The word "political" stems from the Greek word "polis" which means the city or the community (as in the term metroPOLItan). To be concerned for speaking with language that gives respect to all members of the community, to be politcally correct, seems a noble goal to me! There is no uniformity of opinion in the JMDL, no "PC group". Maybe for Galt's sake we should reveal again the great issues on which we differ so strongly: Blue vs FTR vs Hejira as the best Joni album (I am a Blue or NRH person myself) Dog Eat Dog: great album or horrible mistake? Who is Joni thinking of on any of the songs on Blue? Larry Klein: great musical genius or mad Russian on prozac? the Messiah: great oratorio or a horror of the baroque period? Joni: great artist with paints or merely acceptable? Maybe we should start arguing these again to show that there is total diversity of opinion in the JMDL... as we have argued these all in the past... and get our minds off other things. And where is Dr Sid these days, anyway? and maybe we should debate a whole new thread we haven't touched yet: who did let the dogs out anyway, and why? woof, woof, woof, woof, woof (I actually have three different versions of that song which I suppose classifies me as a Who Let the Dogs Out scholar!). I was out partying with a friend and we ran into him and talked for about an hour. He was telling me about the time he was living in San Fransisco and he says that Joni had a flat around the way from him. He said that her manager had shared a story with him about her coming in all excited one day about a tuning she had come up with and was very pleased with herself. I assume this was Elliott. But anyways, come to find out, it was standard tuning. I screamed with laughter. I don't know if the story WAS true or not, but i enjoyed nonetheless, especially told by the Tabasco swigging Coco, who is quite a character all on his own. Speaking of the House Of Blues, I was suppose to attend a Macy Gray concert there, but was hired for a very prestigious gig (by the House of Blues) to be Production Manager for a Dr. John concert in Mississippi. A friend of HOB threw himself a 40th Birthday party on the beach under a huge tent (in the pouring rain and terrible cold), so I had to work and missed the show. Alot of my buds went anyway and while I was well fed with Fresh Raw Oysters, Crab Claws, Shrimp, and an array of gourmet food and drink and wonderful music by the great Dr. John, everyone else rocked out to Macy at HOB. It might have been a conspiracy to keep me away now that I think of it. They say it was the concert of the year and very reminicent of Sly and The Family Stone era shows. Boo hoo. After that show was over, they had a late night show with OutKast and Macy stayed over and sat in with them and they claim it was over the top and a huge love fest between them. Sometimes this biz is infuriating. I get to see so much yet sometimes I miss so much too. Oh well just thought I would share in case Macy comes your way, DO GO CHECK HER OUT! I was driving with my sons, and one of the songs came on the radio (might have been "What If"). Some comments (which I can't remember) were made about my liking the music, and my older son said, "How can you understand the words?" I thought that was pretty funny, coming from a 13-year-old! ***************** I've been thinking about some of the discussion about other artists doing Joni's songs, and how they sound so different from hers. I'm not sure if it is expected that other musicians should try to sound just like her, or whether it's ok to go off track a little. It seems like there should be some room for variations, since Joni herself varies her songs quite a bit. When I hear the originals on her older albums (like Blue, for instance), I find myself wanting to sing the version from Miles of Aisles. While I really like the originals, I think it's fun to hear her having some fun improvising a bit. - --Nancy/IA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Nov 2000 22:50:17 -0800 From: Michael Paz Subject: JoniFest in LA???
