Today's Sounds magazine says of Hejira: Timeless and majestic, this is the music for the spirit. Intellectual and inspired, this is music for the mind. Rhythmic and subtle, this is music for the body. The music of tomorrow, this is the tip of the iceberg. Don't hear this album. Listen to it. Read the rest at: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/761127s.cfm 1976: Melody Maker reviews Hejira, saying "The qualification about this album's success stems indirectly, in fact, from the lyrics. "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" was criticised in some quarters (thought not by me) for being purely a vehicle for her lyrics, a criticism, however, which has some application to "Hejira". This is the first Joni Mitchell record for which the song sheet is indispensable." Read the article at: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/761127mm.cfm 1982: Today's New Musical Express isn't so kind to Wild Things Run Fast, saying "Because she does not have the gift of writing great dumb pop music. That's the only thing that would carry a trifle like "Wild Things Run Fast" itself. There is a persistent suggestion that she's slumming in the cheapest throes of dime-novel romance, and it's ludicrous that the progenitor of the scorched skyline of the "Hejira" set should want to settle for something so facile. This is a simplification, not a paring away." Read it at: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/821127mm.cfm 1982: NME reviews WTRF, saying "Time catches up with everybody, and the central weakness of "Wild Things Run Fast" is that it isn't in time with anything." Read it here: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/821127nme.cfm 1985: (From Wally's bio page): The video for the first single "Good Friends" premiered on MTV [today]. It was directed by Jim Blaschfield, who had found fame with his video for the Talking Heads "And She Was," by inserting color xerox images that move independently within the live action. The premiere of "Good Friends" was announced with some fanfare by MTV VJ Mark Goodman: "Joni Mitchell-at last!", but the video received only light airplay for the next 2 months. - -------- Know a date or month specific Joni tidbit? They are very good, and like you say, write with a lot of spirituality in their lyrics. And I have to say that I totally dislike the phrase "Christian Music". Makes me want to assume that everything not in that "genre" is anti-Christian music or something. I usually find spiritual threads in just about all music, certainly in Joni's music. Although she doesn't profess to be "Christian", the religious influence, specifically Christianity, is really strong. Just start thumbing through her lyrics, and you'll be amazed at the religious/biblical references, even though she does have both positive & negative ones... The clips showed many ages in the audience. One of the things I like, that I heard Scott (singer/lyricist) say is that he thinks everyone has spirituality in them. He defines a Christian band as one that has an agenda to lead others to believe in their specific religious beliefs. Which is not what he is about. They do have references to God & Christian symbols in some of the songs. The lyricist (Scott) spoke about questioning the religion of his upbringing in pursuit of a broader spirituality & his music reflects his search. He also wrote a beautiful song about finding out that he was going to be a father, called Arms Wide Open. For anyone who laments the negativity, hype or lack of depth in some of today's highly marketed music, check these guys out. They fincanced their debut CD (for $6,000) and have had 4 #1 hits from this debut, which is a record for a rock band. According to the story, there was only one brand new upstart label that showed any interest in them (the lable had no artists and very little experience). No one else was interested & thought Creed's music was passe in a world of Marilyn Manson, etc. The band worked hard & like many young musicians, learned the reality of what a record deal is, shattering many of their illusions. Their story is incredibly compelling & would be a great inspiration & eye opener for any young bands looking to make a career in music. ******************************************** Kate Bennett featured this month at Taylor Guitars www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/ www.katebennett.com www.cdbaby.com/katebennett www.amazon.com ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 16:34:27 EST From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Creed In a message dated 11/27/00 3:22:15 PM Eastern Standard Time, kate@katebennett.com writes: << Did anyone see the VH1 show last night on Creed? As a father, I can relate strongly to "With Arms Wide Open," Creed's biggest hit so far, but when I heard the Doors music, it reminds me how much range they had as a band, not just in Jim's voice. One of the Doors old songs sounded like it could have been Steely Dan, another could have been the Beatles, yet others were distinctly Doors. Creed is good, and along with the Red Hot Chili Peppers among the hottest bands around, but on a scale of the Beatles being a 10 and the Doors an 8 or 9, Creed and the Chili Peppers are 3s. I'm still recuperating - went to work today, and decided at lunch-time that I'd over-estimated my energy levels, so came back home for a sleep. This is after being told by three people, "Oooh, you look awful!" which obviously cheered me up! Everything still tastes disgusting - even my favourite foods, damn it! - and my system hasn't quite settled down, but on the plus side, I haven't touched a cigarette in 4 days, nor do I have any desire for one. Let's hope it lasts! Anyway, to answer Marks' question, I don't think there is a "classic Mitchell" but for me, I think that's the main allure. My taste in music is so eclectic (I am a self-confessed music slut, after all), that if Joni only had one style, or had only written in one genre, I think I'd be bored. I love the fact that I can be in the mood for rock music, jazz music, big band music, introspective lyrics, political lyrics, etc., etc., etc. and can have any of those things with just one artist. IMO, no one else comes CLOSE to having that kind of repertoire, which is also the reason I think she appeals to such a diverse group of people. There are those whose favourite album is STAS, for some it's Hejira, for others its DED. They're all completely different, but they're all Joni. It definitely sticks out among the rest of the music being made at that time and nowadays. Margos voice is so tender and evokes such sorrow to the listener. I agree with Jim, this is a good album, For sure, you should all take a look into it. blair _____________________________________________________________________________________ Get more from the Web. I truly felt so emotional about Downey...........I only hope he gets the help he really needs. >> Robert's cover of "River" is excellent...like you say, Jimmy, he emotes the song to perfection and can certainly pull from his experiences in feeling the lyric. It will be on Covers, Volume 12...details to follow tomorrow, I'm too pooped to post tonight! ;~) I was majorly bummed out to read he was busted again. I had read the long Vanity Fair piece about his whole prison sentence, and what a rough time he'd had, and how he was anxious to get a clean slate & a fresh start. And now this. Very sad. I'd like to remind us all of a couple of the list rules of etiquette as outlined in the info message located here http://www.smoe.org/lists/joni.info and sent to each of us when we subscribed: 4) Tolerance, tolerance, tolerance: To debate is divine, to personally insult really sucks. We love a good conversation ... and we do so with respect for all involved... It is not acceptable to personally insult someone publicly on the list. 6) Post from within the ballpark ... the JMDL is an unmoderated discussion of anything and everything related to the life, art, music, and times of Joni Mitchell"... If the list strays to far from Joni for your tastes, be proactive and introduce a new topic to bring us back home. I thank everyone in advance for sitting back, taking a breath, and remembering why we are here in the first place. Be well...
