Do you have Patty Griffin? I have heard much about her from other female singer/songwriters & finally got her first cd Living With Ghosts. WOW. I can't stop playing it. (I love Aimee Mann too). Its pretty much her voice & guitar (the more recent one Flaming Red is a full production- I have only heard samplets of this one). Patty has elements of Rickie Lee Jones, Emmylou Harris, Shawn Colvin & Bonnie Raitt in her music. BTW, I love Rickie Lee Jones & don't think she is anything like Joni. Much less cerebral. The albums others have mentioned are all good. I don't have her new one yet though. Jonatha Brooke is another wonderful singer/songwriter as is Patty Larkin. And while we are talking about other singer/songwriters, even though he is a guy, I have 2 words- JOHN GORKA! ******************************************** Kate Bennett featured this month at Taylor Guitars www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/ www.katebennett.com www.cdbaby.com/katebennett www.amazon.com ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 12:44:17 EST From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: sisotowbell lane Brian Symes asks: Where is Sisotowbell Lane was it an imaginary place You can use the search feature of the JMDL site to find answers to many Joni questions. I hope this helps: From http://www.jmdl.com/articles/docs/951209bb.cfm She generated numerous songs for her newly instituted publishing company, a BMI-administered entity she christened Siquomb. The name stemmed from an acronym-based cast of mythological characters she created for a possible children's book; Siquomb stands for She Is Queen Undisputedly Of Mind Beauty. The word games carried over into "Sisotowbell Lane," a song on her first album whose title stands for the hopeful maxim "Somehow In Spite Of Trouble Ours Will Be Everlasting Love." I used to argue all the time with my parents about it. Maybe that is partially why I detest politics. Anyway both my parents changed their errant ways. My Mom came over from the dark side to vote Democratic & my Dad went to Libertarian before he chose Nader this election. But then my sister & her husband went over to the dark side thanks to Rush L. (I tried to watch him once to see what the appeal was but he disgusted me when he made some comment about women that I felt was negative) so I pretty much made up my mind after that. Call me judgemental. Hey you Republicans, I am just attempting to be lighthearted so please don't take this very seriously. To really get serious though I think politics & religion & all of those difficult subjects are very much a yin yang thing. Both sides have a little of the other in them & if you cling to much to one belief (blindly) you become what you accuse the other side of doing (ie you become what you fear). ******************************************** Kate Bennett featured this month at Taylor Guitars www.taylorguitars.com/artists/awp/indies/ www.katebennett.com www.cdbaby.com/katebennett www.amazon.com ******************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 14:53:32 -0500 From: "Christopher J. I don't remember the title of the tune (for some reason I think it's from a movie, but I could be wrong...), but it's one of VH1's newly added videos and there running ads announcing it's arrival. I love Janet too, actually a great deal more than Madonna, which I get flack for. There's something natural about Janet's sense of rhythm and an innert funkiness that Madge is lacking. I've loved it all, from "Control" right through...the "Velvet Rope" CD is AWESOME. If is see it again, which I'm sure I will, I'll report more, but if you've got cable, just throw on VH1 for a while and you're bound to catch it. - -Chris NP:"Don't Leave Me Behind"-Everything But The Girl ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! That was really thoughtful of you. Felt like an outsider lookin' in ever since I joined this mailing list. I have yet to check out Don Jaun's Reckless Daughter. Seems to be one of the harder-to-find recordings. I've either found/bought/heard everything else, except for the Joni Mitchell 'Song to a Seagull' album. Needless to say, I just can't get enough of Joni's stuff. My latest obsession is Court & Spark, but Hejira I think will remain my favourite (we'll wait for the results of Don Juan). Thanks for the recommendation! Peace, karla _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. (Short) set list as follows: I Had A King Carey California (dedicated to Mel, the Californian MC) You Turn Me On I'm A Radio A Case of You Free Man In Paris Big Yellow Taxi (featuring the audience, who performed the last "Put up a parking lot" line on their own, the band having stopped to let them!) Transmission is a small, intimate (capacity 100ish) monthly music club in the centre of Birmingham. This was FM's first appearance there, and was very well received by the standing-room only audience. It also featured the live debut of Clive's new 5-string custom bass, the bits for which were imported from Washington State. Clive was out when it arrived in three packages, and his long-suffering wife had to part with £150 in duties before the courier would hand it over! Clive has a condition called "GAS" (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome). FM next play on 29th November with sometime Fairporter Vikki Clayton at the Boundary Hotel, Walsall. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 01:34:06 +0000 From: Jason Maloney Subject: Re: Janet ....(Was Joni, Xmas CD & Tribute) Christopher J. The song's called Doesn't Really Matter, and it is indeed from a movie - The Nutty Professor 2, of all things, which she also stars in. It's a pretty neat video, though I still prefer the 80s-style Janet both musically and visually. I had to buy the CD single for a friend in Europe, so the song grew on me eventually. > I love Janet too, actually a great deal more than Madonna, which I get > flack for. Innertia would not easily facilitate funky movement! ;-) > I've loved it all, from "Control" right through...the "Velvet Rope" CD > is AWESOME. Velvet Rope was underrated, especially here in the UK. Sometimes I wish she'd make shorter albums instead of these 70-minute sprawling epics with 12 between-track snippets. Control was 40 minutes of concise perfection. Of course, to be a credible r&b act these days, the 70-minute album is a necessity. I had a friend drop by a couple of weeks ago, a gentleman I know. When he arrived he was happy to see me, beaming, hugging, kissing my cheek. As the visit wore on he began to fill me in on his life of late, as he spoke he became more serious about how lonely he is, how his career as a police officer has affected him (he was shot in the line of duty twice and retired with a disability pension the second time). By the end of our conversation he was talking about having visited a therapist because he's suicidal and doesn't know what to do with himself. He came in as bright as a neon light and he burned out right there before me. This didn't make me a bad friend, I listened, I heard and talked softly to him about the qualities in him that I find appealing. Being a good listener/friend didn't prevent him burning out right before me, it helped him to let go of his emotions and he felt safe enough to display himself to me. I felt honored that he believed in our friendship enough to be himself with me and release his pent-up feelings. I thought a lot about Lessons in Survival after that visit, I firmly believe that the person she burned out before was someone she felt safe with, someone she could discuss her deepest emotions with, someone watching, worrying about her state of mind and buckling their brow in concern for the depth of her apparent despair. We don't show our despair to people we don't trust. Friends are people who we can share ourselves with, good and bad, they accept us as we come, they try to help us even when we are "heavy company." I have a soft spot in my heart for the person she could turn to in desperation and know it was ok to emote.
