A few days ago I was pleased to get a copy of the self -produced CD "Introducing Joe Slomp". First there's a f*@#ing great jazzy NYC-night version of "Guinnevere" (imagine CPR and a trumpet revisiting it the way they did with "Triad" - Croz: I'm sure you'll like this version), then Joni's "A Case of You", then a beautiful rendition of "All the Way Home", a song Springsteen wrote for Southside Johnny, then the Doobies' "Takin´ It To The Streets" and other beautiful gems. Well-balanced between his roots (the singer-songwriters of the West Coast) and his natural jazz inclination, this is a collection of some of the songs Joe has been singing through the years presented here in elegant dresses. As Joe wrote on the booklet: "Some might feel disoriented by the different styles in this selection of songs, but my feeling is that when the music is good, there is no sense in putting boundaries to it." Visit his site, listen to clips of each song and enjoy the album! http://www.jslomp.it/ijs/ Francesco PS - Soon there will be also some excellent outtakes to download, so bookmark his website and remember to visit it in the very next future. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 08:48:27 GMT From: "Wayne A. Willbur" Subject: OK, I GIVE! NEXT TIME I VOTE DEMOCRAT! Dear Chairman of the DNC: Democrats have made me a convert after I’ve voted Republican in the past 4 elections! Why? 1. Democrats are better at the art of political war! Democrats treat politics like war; Republicans treat it like a high-school debate. Who will consistently win? Democrats! Let’s just hope that should the US have to go to war (heaven forbid), that the Democrats are as ruthless toward the enemy as they have been against their Republican fellow countrymen. Furthermore, their PR and Spin Meisters are superior to their Republican counterparts; I’ve been amazed at the Democratic Spin Meisters who make white look like black and black look like white, according to the direction of the prevailing wind. 2. Democrats are more loyal to their own than Republicans. I remember when Ronald Reagan was termed the “Teflon President.” Bill Clinton perfected the art. He was caught perjurying himself and still survived impeachment with Democrats not only protecting him but also actually making up the excuses for him. If he had been Republican, he would have been gone years ago! 3. Democrats are more glamorous than Republicans. More Hollywood entertainers vote more consistently Democratic than Republican, and let’s face it: Arnold Schwartznegger is no Alex Baldwin, Belinda Carlyle is no Barbara Streisand, and, of course, there’s only one Rosie O’Donnell. I was dumbfounded to learn that some of our country’s entertainment royalty threatened to move, yes, actually move from the US if Bush became president. That would truly be a national loss; the thought of Barbara Streisand moving from her seaside mansion in Malibu to a seaside mansion in the South of France, preventing me from spending a few hundred dollars on a future concert to hear her croon “People Need People” was too much to consider. 4. Finally, I’m tired – flat out tired. It takes too much time to consider, ponder and weigh things like issues, character and integrity. I just want the simplicity of knowing that I can vote for the party that promises to make me feel better, more comfortable, and more fulfilled, and if we stop to truly admit it, we can always feel just a little bit better about ourselves. It’s just too much to expect us to continuously take responsibility for ourselves; that’s a job better left to our elected officials, our government. I now realized that Republicans have tricked us into thinking that this is our obligation. What a fool I’ve been! I’ve gone through years of soul-searching with the burden of this responsibility and for what? Now, I know, since I’ve done more research, that Democrats have been there all along with that wonderful net of safety to catch us all when we fall. In closing, thank you with much gratitude. I look forward to working on the Hillary Clinton Presidential Campaign 2004! Here's the Joni content from the article: But Broadway cheer is quickly left behind for darker and more exotic pastures as LuPone delves into contemporary material: Brian Wilson (``God Only Knows'') and Joni Mitchell (``The Last Time I Saw Richard''), alongside Randy Newman, Judy Collins and even -- holy Toledo! -- Cyndi Lauper, in a quietly rending version of the pop hit ``Time After Time.'' The presentation was held at the Willows Golf Resort in Saskatoon and attended by her parents and former teachers. Joni said "Awards don't mean that much to me. That people like the music is the best award." After the presentation Joni gave an hour long interview and performed a new song called 'The Magdalene Laundries" that she said she planned to record with Sinead O'Connor on background vocals. 1994: Today, Joni was in London, England for a solo showcase for the media at a townhouse off Gloucester Road in South Kensington. Before the event, Joni was interviewed and performed "Sunny Sunday" and "Sex Kills" on the BBC series "The Late Show." At around a quarter to 7 in the evening Joni went on stage and performed for more than an hour in front of 200 media and record company people from all over Europe. She said to the audience "I don't know how to address you; you're not all Brits..Spain? Italy? France? Do we have France? And I hear there's someone here from Greece." Her set included "Refuge of the Roads," "Night Ride Home," her newest pair of tunes "Loves' Cries" and "Happiness is the Best Facelift," as well as a few selections from the album she was there to promote, "Sex Kills," "Magdelaine Laundries," Sunny Sunday," and "Yvette in English." She referred to Crosby before she sang "Yvette" and the fact that he was in a California hospital waiting for a liver transplant. (He'd actually had the transplant operation a few hours before her show started). An amazing footnote is that Joni didn't smoke a single cigarette for the duration of her show! Joe Slomp, an Italian JMDL'er, sent me a copy of this wonderful CD as well, and I've been enjoying it over the past couple of days and was preparing my review... Anyway, this is a super collection of songs. It's almost like Joe read my mind and did all my favorite artists! Doobie Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Joni, Bruce Springsteen....what- no XTC or Tom Waits? :~) Joe's an extremely talented vocalist. The songs he picks are not easy songs. He's a blue-eyed soul singer, his voice is very chameleonic, he can belt out a punchy soul shout or coo a soft whisper, and the musicians on this disc are astounding! I don't know them, but I'll bet they're among the best studio musicians available in that part of the globe. Here's a rundown of the tracks: 1. A Case of You - This will appear on Volume 12. Thanks Joe for granting me inclusion, this will be a good way to get you heard across the country, the world for that matter. And he had some neat comments about Joni, he can tell you what he said... 2. Guinnevere - This one's the standout! Imagine Steely Dan running this song through a "Home At Last" treatment and maybe you can begin to grasp the feel this one has. Has to be heard to be believed. Kakki, obviously I thought of you as soon as I heard this chestnut! It's an OHMYGAWD jawdropper! 3. So In Love - This is a Curtis Mayfield song, done in a very Stax/Volt way, tremendous horn section and that soulful Booker T organ sound. Very nice. 4. Woman's Gotta Have It - This Bobby Womack tune is probably familiar to most of it via James Taylor's cover. This is similar in arrangement, but much funkier and jazzier, and Andrea Cecchini's bass is featured and provides a steady foundation along with solid drums by Marcello Surace. Think of Hall & Oates and those white-boy soul harmonies they were famous for, and you're pretty close. 5. This Time It's Real - This one would be a HUGE hit in SC, where they eat up "beach music" tunes like this! This one would fill up the dance floor in a hurry. It's Joe's salute to Tower of Power, and it's powerful good! 6. All The Way Home - The first of two Springsteen songs Joe does, this one is a little obscure because it was a tune Bruce wrote for Southside Johnny. And the arrangement is much more stripped down, just the vocal, an acoustic, and a soft organ. Very tasty, thanks for bringing this one out, Joe! 7. She Makes My Day - A Robert Palmer song, this one is my least favorite on the disc. Maybe because I miss all those babes that Palmer used to put in his videos! :~) That said, it's still a pretty song, it just doesn't hold up to the rest of the gems here... 8. Smile, Please - Another HUGE winner! Never heard anyone else do this song, it's of course Stevie Wonder's tune from "Fulfillingness". Joe brings the tempo down a bit and makes it a slow burnin' funky thang! Joe brings out the joy in the song, that's for sure. Not too many singers would brave the range of notes and scatting you've gotta do to pull it off! 9. Takin' It To The Streets - Are you kidding me? How cool is this? Joe and company take this Doobies tune and give it a slick jazz treatment. Joe sorta sounds like Michael McDonald anyway (when he wants to, I told you he's like a chameleon!) , and this one is also noteworthy for the great piano work by Pier Paolo Principato. It definitely puts a new spin on it! 10. Living Proof - The other Springsteen song on the record, this is a beautiful song about the joys of having children. Joe's got two, Alice & Martha, and I think both of their middle names are "Joni". Anyway, this is a unique arrangement as well, some great guitar work by Stefano Micarelli and propulsive choo-choo drumming as well. I've always loved this song, Joe, so I appreciate you adding it here. 11. Some Other Time - A Leonard Bernstein song, from 1944, this one is a gorgeous closer as it's just Joe and Andrea Eventano on piano. A pretty song I'm not familiar with..."just when the fun is starting, comes the time for parting"...man, is it done already? This is truly a very cool record. Well done Joe, and give a "grazi" to those musicians - they are WONDERFUL! All that's left is to tell us how those that want it can pick up a copy! And I'd love to hear more about the songs, why you picked the ones you did, anything else you'd care to share... And you can do the XTC and Tom Waits on your next record, Joe, and I've already got the title for you: "Sophomore Slomp"! :~) Bob NP: Joe Slomp, "Some Other Time" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 20:33:22 -0500 From: "Christopher J. I'm fairly certain that was to be the 3rd part of the orchestral trio of Joni projects, the second being the one of her compositions exclusively, probably including versions of "Hejira", "JOTMAS". "FTR" and "Be Cool" like we heard on tour last spring. I wonder myself if THAT stuff is in the can yet....Joni tends to be a little slow getting things out. ;~) As far as the tribute CD is concerned, I'll be very suprised if it's out before the end of the year. Most big New Releases have to be out by the Tuesday B4 Thanksgiving to be ready for the shopping rush. Usually, things are at a standstill from then until the second week of January. I haven't seen mention of it on the Reprise site, nor on Jim's page, and I emailed Reprise 2 weeks ago and they didn't get back to me. Neither my local Tower nor HMV or Border's have ordered it yet, AND I saw a new Janet Jackson video today on VH1 for another single altogether. I'm not trying to be a bummer, but more express frustsation - where the hell is this record???? Most of the tracks for this disc were finished EONS ago (this project started not too long after the release of 'TI' - no joke!) and I'm forever annoyed by the release process by which finished quality recordings get shelved in order to focus on big sellers.
