There are songs out there that just rock my world enough to make me question everything. Why the injustice? Have I been romantic enough? Thanks for that shallow piece of @$%#? etc. So here is my list and you know it will change everyday because the pattern nevers stays the same, if it does then I have begun to die and I have no right to share anything with you. 1. Treacy" Subject: Rock Stars and Requests(sjc) Long VideoTree sign-up: http://www.jmdl.com/trading Unsubscribe: mailto:onlyjoni-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe I am all too familiar with the nit-picky requests (actually, more like demands) that performers make in their contracts. The portion of the contract in question is called a 'rider' and it can make or break the relationship between the artist & their management with the promoter(s) at hand. I used to work for a booking and promotion agency in '94 & '95. Most memorable was the Indigo Girls contract rider, which went on for (4) pages, specifying meals, elaborate 'snacking foods' to be distributed at odd times during the day, and several rounds of beer and expensive waters (!). We often forget that the rider also includes the needs of the bands crew, so it can become quite lengthy and costly; (no wonder the Indigo's are swollen these days!). Most notable from their rider was a request for a certain sort of blue corn chip which, if could not be attained at first try, the girls humbly provided an 800 # for the distributor to dtermine the nearest vendor. These people don't leave much room for the word 'no'. Not specific to the rider persay, but another interesting story - during the second leg of Melissa's "Yes I Am" tour, she had hired a bunch of 'sharks' to represent her in her new found glory. We had worked with her usual people before, but this was a new bunch, and they didn't want to play fair. The negotiation between promoter, venue, and artist AFTER the show is called 'settlement' and it can get ugly. Melissa's 'new' representation wanted us to provide receipts for every single thread of $ spent, right down to the cleaning bill for the towels used by the band and crew. We received a fruit basket and an apology from Melissa herself about 3 weeks afterward. As far as Joni is concerned, the only thing I can relate is this; During the BSN tour, Joni was booked to stay at The Seaport Hotel (my place of employment, but not at the time) in Boston, a non-smoking establishment with no openable windows. To my knowledge, Joni's contract states that wherever she stays MUST allow smoking, and if it does not, a window should be available (inferring that she will smoke against house policy). Though I wasn't there personally (I only started at this job in july...), Ms. Mitchell was apparently in a huff from the get go because of the lack of an openable window, but then came the problem with the chicken. Joni wants a baked chicken for her din-din, not fried, not grilled, but baked. When a grilled chicken was delivered to her room, that was the last straw. By the time one of my room service cohorts got back up to the 18th floor with a baked chicken, Joni was already set-a-packing, heading full speed to The Four Seasons. Can ya' blame 'er? The Seaport Hotel is located just a few minutes walk from the Fleet Boston Pavillion (former "Harborlights"), and must have seemed like a good idea to whomever booked the room. I now have to endure hearing about what a bitch Joni was every time she comes up at work.... One last note; I find this hard to believe, because by all accounts I've always heard she's personable and friendly, but apparently Tori Amos has a codicil in her rider that states venue employees are not to make eye contact with her. I don't think it's news to anyone here that Joni tackled this subject already with "The Magdalene Laundries." For me, what's probably most interesting about Cher's explosive release is my understanding (from news reports) that the song is only available through her website! Now that's something special. What better way for an artist to maintain control over marketing than by limiting the outlet, avoiding creative pressure from the distribution and retail levels. Ani DeFranco has had remarkable success in this regard. Cher's attempt at this now raises the stakes considerably. I can't think of another popular artist of her magnitude to attempt this, can anyone else? That is other than Bowie, who owns his own catalog and chooses to maintain business control over his own publishing and masters. I'd guess that Cher has an internet identity with a legion of fans who would appreciate the opportunity to have first crack at new work. Hmmm. Does this sound familiar? If I'm in error about "Sisters Of Mercy" only being available from Cher's website, I apologize but it's really not a bad idea, is it? It looks like the news reports are not accurate - you can preorder from the site but you can't buy any tracks ahead of the street date. The preorders will ship when the CD is officially released. That particular track is also available at other places . . . you can download it at http://ww.launch.com. Alot of artists have done this type of thing and have been doing it for some time so it's nothing new. Belinda Carlisle was the opening act at the Cher concert last year here in Dublin (yes, i can stand up in public and declare for all to hear that Cher came to Dublin to PLAY FOR ME). Belinda was really quite awful. her whole set had a distinctly eighties feel. one of hte band even had a red keyboard in the shape of a guitar:-) at one point she yelled "i'll now show you how truly talented i am" and then laughed. she launced into a self penned song, and rocked obnoxiously from side to side for the next four minutes. it was cringe worthy. that said, Heaven is a place on earth (with which she closed her set) was a lot of fun and got hte audience into a great mood. her other highpoints were Circle in the Sand, and that song that goes "suddenly i'm in too deep....". in all honesty, the biggest disappointment of the night was that Cher didn't sing One By One! Sisters of Mercy is, i think, about her mothers ordeal at the hands of hte good sisters. it is fairly bland. there are other songs to be heard on teh website. Courtney Love placed a number of songs from her own library of Hole recordings on her site for anyone to download. live versions, b sides, covers, Kurt singing with her and so on. this was her way of taking back her music, and giving something ot the fans-Way to go Courtney! on a different note, my early education was given by these same sisters and was great. my sister was in their care until she finished second level, while i moved on to the Marist fathers. i consider that part of my education to have been great, as does my sister, so folks, things HAVE changed here in Ireland:-) wasnt Magdalene Laundries about Sisters of Charity? Check out Monty Python's Secret Policeman's Other Ball to see this theory in action. Beck destroy's Clapton, and this concert is like 30 years old. Sting singing w/ an acoustic guitar is cool too. Robben Ford is my choice in that genre, although he's not as blue collar, he's bad to the bone. Stevie Ray meets Larry Carlton, two of his greatest influences, but he has a singular voice.
