You go girl. i was there, too, and i found Chaka's performances by far the best of the night. my friends still laugh at me for having said, "that was one of the best moments of my life hearing chaka khan singing joni mitchell songs". i thought her interpretations were really cool - she worked the phrasing her own way and chose very interesting unexpected songs. so many of the other performances had none of their own style. barbara np: jane siberry, hush ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 10:28:54 EDT From: Murphycopy@aol.com Subject: Ronstadt Xmas album/"River" review From an article at http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/rolls/20001017/en/limp_bizkit_johnny_cash_lead_ne w_releases_1.html - --- Linda Ronstadt A Merry Little Christmas (Elektra) Top-loaded with holiday classics all arranged in Forties big band-style, with Rosemary Clooney even sitting in, you'd think there was a theme at work on Linda Ronstadt's addition to the stacks of holiday music recorded by popular vocalists. However, when she throws down Joni Mitchell's anti-Christmas melody, "River," the mood changes entirely, a reminder that Ronstadt once had a career as one of the finest folk-rock vocalists of her generation. So she goes and follows that track with a set of solemn sacred songs, beautifully arranged for choir. OK, so she's a contemporary vocalist non-paralleled -- but next time, she might consider picking a topic and sticking to it. The mishmash of styles is jarring -- like listening to three albums at once. Yes, this is a really special collection and I'm loving every cut so far, even Neil Diamond's Free Man in Paris! It got me thinking about how these compilations really represent some amazing and often rare treasures. When the project began I researched many music store and online databases and yet still there have been many selections found that are not listed in the usual resources. This makes all the efforts to put this together really significant. I would bet we are the only group out there that has put together such a unique and encompassing collection. Which brings me to another thought regarding Joni's Birthday- I think it would be great if we could put together an actual box set of these volumes for Joni. I'm thinking of something original and artistic like the cookbook where we could build a pretty box to hold the CDs and maybe design cover art for each of them. I realize this is probably too much work to do before November 7th, and think we should still go with the birthday card idea, but perhaps this is something we can start working on and maybe have ready in time for sending during the holiday season. I think she would really like it and I'm sure she has not heard all these renditions, or if she does have some of them, they are probably strewn about or stashed away somewhere. This way she'd have them all together in a nice little package. I know that Penny left the first few volumes for Joni in Saskatoon last summer - that's was a great preview - now we should send her the full set! ;-) Kakki NP: Diamond Head - This Flight Tonight ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 16:24:25 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni Covers and Birthday <> Very true, Kakki, what I've seen is that any DEFINITIVE list is going to be lacking, and I certainly had no idea what I was getting into, but I gotta say I have loved every second of it! As a fairly newbie to the list, but an old time owner of a taped copy of the Posall and Mosalm bootleg LP. I had often wondered who Joni was duetting with on the opening track The Circle Game but couldn't place his voice. Today I received a photocopy of the original bootleg LP cover "Made in the Ukraine" and it lists Joni's singing partner as none other than Chuck Mitchell and sources it as a 1966 WMMR Interview. The other tracks are individually credited to the 2nd Fret, March 17 and October 12, 1967, with others credited to further WMMR Interviews on October 12, 1967. Maybe this is old hat to old time listers, but I had to share it as I never knew anything existed of Joni singing with Chuck, his guitar picking style is quite clear too against Joni's strumming patterns. I'll live happily now having heard the two of them together, untill that is some historian points out it isn't Chuck at all but someone completely different. For those newbies like me I'm happy to copy either the tape or the LP cover. Steve.............the impossible dreamer NP. (welcome to ny!), nikki and my dear ashara had dinner at judy's chelsea, where david and mitch (and a fine bassist, david graber?) held forth. this was actually mitch's show, and it was nicely put together and directed. when mitch took the stage, i realized i'd seen and heard him sing at judy's before (in the front piano bar rather than in an act) and i'd thought he was quite good. this evening, it took some time to get used to the actorly way of singing, but it's part of cabaret and he made it work, especially as the show went on. and he has a really beautiful voice, with great tone in the ballads and some hot syncopation in the jazzier numbers. opened with the first verse of 'refuge of the roads'. this was actually a theme of the show; doing a verse of that song every once in a while. a very nice touch. he did 'all i want'. a well sung version of 'coyote' that made a little bit too much (to my taste) of the oddness of singing it as a man. later he did 'in france they kiss on main street' which reminds me a lot of coyote, but he smoked 'in france'. just fantastic jazzy singing. an early moment where he had me was 'chelsea morning'. just made a beautiful sound on the high early lines, then took a really novel take on the first line of each chorus. 'oh, won't you stay, we can put on a day'. he made it surprised, kind of shocked into reality after the dreaminess of the descriptions. like, you wake up with a beautiful man on a glorious day, and instead wanting to share this glorious day you're singing about, he wants to get out of there so fast, to go to work or play golf or avoid commitment. what's that about? very funny and interesting. and i think we've all been there. he also left the stage for one instrumental, blue motel room. just so sweet. i really got to listen so closely to david's pianism, in that number and throughout the show and it was so satisfying. mitch introduced a section that he described as 3 joni portraits. one was one of the verses of 'refuge' (i think the white-assed deer one), one was 'sunny sunday', which truly does have a cabaret/art song feel to it when sung in this context. one of the strengths of cabaret is the laser focus on the lyrics, on the story of the song, and 'sunny sunday' was a very strong moment. then he did his thank yous and introductions, and was told by david that he'd made a mistake and skipped one portrait. which turned out to be an ice-cold version of cherokee louise. long ago someone on list (mendi, maybe) wrote that what makes the song work is the warm, almost major key 6/8 shuffle, throwing the contrast of the dark story in relief. i agree, and i'll always love it that way, but david and mitch certainly made the case for an all-dark version. the piano accompaniment was sparse, almost just chords, but thick, murky, glacial chords (lots of keys and not very many notes). and it was sung beautifully, hauntingly. after the foster father took his zipper down, mitch excised one line, and then took the 'oh please, please be there' line with perfectly pitched intensity. i'm sounding a little bit too much the music critic wanabee, but i hope you get how well this was performed. he finished with the last verse of 'refuge' and took 'both sides now' as an encore. a very strong show, and the audience response was as well. of course he did have his parents were, and it was his birthday, and we sang for him, and they gave out cake, that was all quite fun. we got to talk with david lahm some more, and more with each other, and then broke the night up. patrick np - david lahm - song for sharon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Oct 2000 18:22:48 -0700 From: "Mark or Travis" Subject: Re: Chaka > > > I don't fault Chaka for > > applying her idiom, in fact I congratulate her for it. I certainly never meant to take anything away from the considerable talents of Ms. Khan. But sometimes I think the old saying that less is more is very true. I would apply that to the song 'Hejira' and most of Joni's catalogue, in fact. I feel that 'Hejira' is such an introspective, intimate song that a powerhouse delivery just seems inappropriate to me. I applaud any artist that tries to bring something fresh to a piece of music and give it their own interpretation. But I also think there is such a thing as keeping some respect for the work being covered. I'm sure the tapes of Joni's Jazz didn't do full justice to the performances. Not that I'm complaining about the quality of the tapes! But a recording can never be the same as actually experiencing a live performance. Then again, I was listening to the tape of the 98 Gorge concert on the way home from work tonight & I was so grateful to be able to hear the music without all the distractions that kept trying to tear me away from Joni when I was actually there. When the announcer said, 'ladies & gentlemen - JONI MITCHELL' I got that lump in my throat all over again! And there was the music with no assholes talking all the way through it! Gonna sing a quick litte song, lemme set it up for you. Picture it, Sicily, 1914...no, on second thought, New York City, 1998, it's 3:40am, you're heading home after hanging with some friends who took you out for your birthday, you pass the Blue Note, and see that Joe Sample is performing so you stop in, they don't ask you for a cover as its so late and the show is almost over, you sit down at a small table and order a beer, its dark, and only about 50% full. About two minutes later, Joe finishes the song he was playing as you walked in, and says "Ladies and Gentleman, an old friend is in the audience, and she'd like to come on stage and jam with me, please give a warm welcome to Miss Joni Mitchell." She gets on stage, wearing a long black dress, the crowd gives her an exuberant welcome, they hand her a baby blue Martin, and she begins strumming...."Heatwaves on the runway, as the wheels set down, he takes his baggage off the carousel, takes a taxi into town." Joe joins in on Centerpiece, and Joni whips out a husky voice, and breaks into some of her best jazz singing ever: "The more I'm with you pretty baby, the more I feel my love increase..." "Shining hair and shining skin, shining as she reeled 'em in, to tell him like she did today, just what he could do with Harry's House, and Harry's take-home-pay." The crowd roars. Cassandra Wilson is in the audience, a little embibed, and gives a loud standing ovation. Joni looks around the room and spots you, and says "you're Patrick from the JMDL, right? I recognize your picture from one of Wally's party pages. Isn't today your birthday? Smiling from ear to ear, she waves you onstage, you're a little shy, but she's warm and encouraging, as you approach the stage she turns to Joe. "Do you know happy birthday?" Joe begins to play it in some weird minor chord, Joni accompanies him on guitar, playing a note here and there, as she sings in a deep, rich voice: "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Patrick, happy birthday to you." Cassandra Wilson has made her way to the stage, grabbed a free mike, and adds: "And many more" She spreads those 4 syllables out for a good 15 seconds. The drummer brushes the cymbals. Joe's fingers are dancing on the piano. Joni takes off the guitar and gives you a warm embrace and a wet kiss on the cheek. The lights are brightened a bit, they announce last call, and Joe and his band go into their final selection. Happy 40, Patrick, and many more!!!
