It's a book which seeks to explore the changing role of women musicians and the ways in which their songs resonate in popular culture, starting in the 60s and moving through to the present day. The sub title is "sexuality, itentity and subjectivity". The opening lines and, indeed, much of the content of the introduction feature the role of Joni Mitchell. Much is made of the difficulties for women in a male dominated industry and credit is given to Joni for demonstrating what can be done. Apparently, in the last 20 years, no more than 5 women have been appointed heads of any UK record companies and the statistics in the US are worse. Chapter six is called "The Lonely Road: Joni Mitchell, Blue and subjectivity" and is essentially an analysis of the album, Blue. As usual, there are one or two factual inaccuracies, but what is good is that it's a very musical analysis, examining harmonies, chord progressions and musical structure and relating all this to the lyrics with lots of written examples. It's a very enjoyable read and the writer is clearly a fan, the last line being :- It is a personal experience that is communicated with wit and intelligence and has certainly proved an inspiration for me. Others featured in the book include Janis Joplin, Annie Lennox, Madonna, k.d.lang and Tori Amos, ending with Brit pop and the Spice Girls. Hope this hasn't already been discussed. "Garage" is one of those words that is pronounced several different ways depending on where you're from. Even in my own family, my sister pronounces it "GaRAJ" ("J" like the G's in "George", rhymes with Badge); I pronounce it "GarRAWZh" ("zh" like the "s" in pleasure"). Most Brits I've heard say it pronounce it "GARage" to rhyme with "carriage". (Psst, I like the big boo-hoo, so what do I know?) _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? In Joni's song 'Love' I always thought that she sang 'Love - never looks for love Love's not puffed up or envious or touchy Because it rejoices in the truth Not in the nicotine' as opposed to 'not in iniquity' I thought that it sounded a little funny for a long time but accepted it as I knew of her penchant for smoking. It wasn't until I bought a copy of the album with the lyrics printed inside the tape cover and read through it. I will be in the City That Never Sleeps from Friday, October 20 to Wednesday October 25. I won't make it in time to catch the *opening* of David Lahm's all-Joni program at Judy's Chelsea, but I will attend on the 24th. I do hope some jmdlers will be at liberty to join me and (Atty.)May that night. I'm also setting aside Sunday for hanging with Joni-friends. Patrick, Rose, Alison, Nikki, Duane, Debra Shea, and all other units in the vacinity...won't you come out and play? I'm thinking brunch or something. I'm all ears for other activity suggestions though. Actually, Patrick I'm counting on you for pointers on how to do NY right, please? I'm subletting an apartment on the Upper West Side at 370 Columbus Avenue, Apt. 4B, between 77th and 78th Avenues. It's right across the street from the Museum of Natural History and across Central Park from the Met Museum of Art. I'll be checking out both museums. If anyone wants to come with, you're welcome to. Then the new planitarium is within walking distance too. Plus we'll be painting the town red and taking in much jazz and blues. You can always reach me on my cell at 415-672-5734. It was a really good introduction to Bjork's musical world, which I never dared enter before. And now that I read on jonimitchell.com that Bjork will be doing a version of "The Boho Dance" on the new CD package to be released this winter, "A Case of Joni," I wonder if the title of her movie just coincidentally is the same as a line in Joni's song, "My Old Man?" My Old Man He's a singer in the park He's a walker in the rain He's a dancer in the dark Can anyone think of any other lyrics of Joni's that have been expropriated for a movie? It seems to me, there have been other cases where people have stolen some of Joni's great poetic expressions for other uses?
