Diane had an interesting idea that got me thinkin.' I'll repeat it here in case you missed it: "How about an image of blue roses (the bittersweet side of love and life) with a tamed tiger [housecat :-)] done in a post-impressionist style? Joni's own style of painting echoes the post-impressionists..." Very cool idea. One problem -- I'm not sure there's a picture like that around that we could get onto a card in time. But I'll bet there are other pictures, and I do think it would be great to send Joni a card with original artwork done by a talented Joniphile. I'm sure there's lots of great stuff out there. I also liked Cassy's scrapbook idea, as follows: "I think it would be cool if we put together a scrapbook, one page for each person who wants to contribute something, have all the pages bound in a book, or pasted into the book and someone who is more creative than I could perhaps make a cover for it." Even though I'm always concerned about deluging Joni with too much stuff (I still think a card is best), this might be nice. She did like the cookbook, after all. My main concern here is that this is a more demanding project that might take more time than we have if we really want to do it up right. I think we should keep this one in mind for the future! Here's what I'd like to do. If you have artwork that you'd like to appear on Joni's card, send me a jpeg (send to JoniMessages@aol.com) and I'll put it up on JoniMitchell.com -- then we can all vote (confidentially) for the one we want. The catch: If you win, I'll need a good photograph or a high-resolution scan (at least 150dpi, preferably higher) right away so we can get a good clear print. Last day to cast a vote: Sunday 10-22. I'll also do the same thing for the message on the inside of the card (again, please send it to me at JoniMessages@aol.com). Just send me your few well-chosen words for an inside message, and we can all vote for our favorite greeting. I think we'll vote for that a few days later, after we know what the outside of the card is going to look like. As a fan of both XTC and Joni as well, I'm just curious as to which song(s) they each contributed to this record. I've never heard of it before, but I'm going to start looking for it at used record stores if the recordings on it aren't available anywhere else. Also, according to someone on the XTC list, they will be putting out an album of demos of songs from _Wasp Star_. Unlike the _Apple Venus_ demos album, this one will apparently feature multiple demos of the same songs, as they progressed from rough sketches to more finalized versions. Apparently "I'm The Man Who Murdered Love" is one of the songs that went through the most changes, including different melodies. The guy who heard these demos said that one of the versions sounds "like Joni Mitchell." Now, he didn't elaborate further, but I am quite curious, given that Andy Partridge and Joni are two of my favorite songwriters. I've never really thought of them sharing a lot in common stylistically, but it would be interesting to see their musical paths cross... I couldn't make out Andy or Colin on the track, but our Joni is right there! Always such a pleasant surprise when that voice pops up like that! <> That will be cool...the benefit of them switching from the apathetic Virgin to the tiny TVT Records is that TVT doesn't have to sell a lot of units to recoup their costs, so they can indulge with additional releases of demos, etc. I have demos for a lot of these Wasp Star songs, but most of them are very polished already, not very raw at all. Thought you might all want to know that a GREAT radio station in New York City will be playing Joni's music all day long on Monday, Oct. 16th. ( Well, not literally all day long. Joni will be their featured "artist-of-the-day". So they will be playing lots of her stuff). As part of this celebration of "All-Things-Joni", their afternoon DJ - the extraordinary Dennis Elsis - will be playing a tape of an interview he did with Joni on WNEW-FM sometime in the Eighties. I think I remember this interview - might be about the time of "Dog Eat Dog" or "Wild Things Run Fast". But this is off the top of my head - so don't beat me up if I got it all wrong. Dennis Elsis used to be a rock DJ back in the days when WNEW-FM was New York's City's best rock radio station. Much has happened since then - mutant space aliens have taken over WNEW-FM and turned it into a living zombie where daily the poor thing is made to transmit stuff that would make the poor thing gag if it were actually still alive - and Mr. Elsis has made his way to WFUV - the world's premiere "Triple A" radio station. ( Which is "adult album alternative" - or some such radio biz nonsense. It means they play a lot of contemporary folk, some bluegrass and alt.country stuff, and here-and-there a bit of better rock. Anyway - they do webstream! So if you want to hear the Joni interview tape, check out www.wfuv.org . I heard about the re-broadcast of the old Joni interview on John Platt's SUPERB Sunday Morning show, by the way. That is on from 8am to 11am NYC time every Sunday - and is some of the best radio currently being produced anywhere on the planet earth. WNEW-FM does come to life Sunday nights, by the way. They still have legendary DJ Vin Scelsa - and he still does his great "Idiot's Delight" show from 8pm till 2am. He is now also doing a "web only" radio show on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 12noon to 3pm - but the show repeats itself immediately for those on the west coast - and much of the content is archived - and available anytime. The site may be a bit hard to reach - but go to www.artistent.com or www.jandr.com and hopefully you can find it. OK... no more plugs... but thought these might be of real value to my fellow Joni fans. OK...see ya.... By his daughter-- who was sorely neglected by the ol' rambler. I haven't seen it yet, but it makes it clear how Ramblin' Jack was a middle-class Jewish kid from Brooklyn who very deliberately modelled himself after Guthrie, in speech, dress, music, attitude and assumed a folky-populist-western persona. And that Robert Zimmerman, another middle class Jewish kid, did the same thing with Ramblin' Jack as his essential model: changed his name and assumed a new folky-populist persona. To great success: a star was born! So, is it fair to say that Ramblin' Bob Dylan is a self-concocted as, say, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars? Bruce M NP "She blinded me with.... science!" Just wanted to pass on the news that Warner Music Group has just announced that it will release a Joni album in the new DVD Audio format soon. I don't want to get into the audiophile-speak here, but basically, DVD-Audio titles are remixed from original master recordings to create multichannel surround tracks for DVD-Audio players and DVD Video players. That is to say, you'll be able to listen to the Joni album in "surround sound" on your DVD player. They don't say which album they will release in the new format, but I hope it's Blue or Hejira and that it's out there before the holidays. I'm dreaming of "River" in surround sound by the yule fireside. The prayer and response which now reads "May the Lord be with you"/"And also with you" was then answered by (don't know if I'm spelling this correctly) "Et cum spirit tu tuo." I always thought that this response was a telephone number. Back then, all the telephone exchanges were associated with neighborhoods or towns as in "Pennsylvania 6, Five Thousand" like "Plaza " or "Bayside" or "Flushing", "Flatbush", "Kingsbridge"etc. So I figured that "Et cum spirit" was someplace exotic and sacred in the holy land and surely ET-CUM-SPIRIT-220 must be God's phone number, the congregation repeated it as mantra the way the same way actors did on TV commercials. I never tried to dial it because us kids weren't allowed to make long distance calls.
