It was commercial time, so I had the sound muted and suddenly I saw a picture of Joni on the screen. I unmuted the sound and it was an advertisement for a show this Sunday night on Sky One at 9 p.m. (UK time) called something like Chars to the Stars. The description in the TV guide was that there would be profiles of various famous people and details about their lives. Maybe there are some UK JMDLers who would be able to watch it. That's why only now do I return to the apparently exhausted thread... Here tis: The first Joni song I truly grooooved to, and the first I purchased was.... "This Flight Tonight" by Nazareth. This was way back, in London, in the early 70's when it came out and was a top 20 hit on the radio. I know this has to be a truly dark dark dark secret because Bob classifies this cover as "Dangerously Cheesy." But I liked the chugging rhythm guitar and the screaming tenor that says tacky "Arena Rock" all over it. I confess! I especially liked those distorted voices, as if coming through the cheap headphones provided by the airplane, & the way that he wailed: "Las Vegas Sands...!" And-- get this!-- not only did I like all of it, and played that cracked 45 repeatedly (it was one of the 5 I purchased while in London for some 3 years) I didn't even know that it was a Joni tune when I first heard it... Not until I read her name beneath the title. "Huh? Joni Mitchell??"-- I asked myself. That's right, Joni was only a distant blip on my musical radar screen, some hazy indeterminate "Blonde Folkie" over there, strumming her guitar. Please forgive me! - --grovelingly, Bruce PS Second Joni tune I bought, about 7 years later, "Hissing." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 08:33:57 -0400 From: Susan McNamara Subject: Fwd: songs songs & more songs >Susan wrote: Morning Morgantown (I can't play this song all the way through >without crying since I had the thought that Joni wrote it for >Kilauren. I love her. It amazes me how many people can't get past the image of Madonna to listen to the music or read her lyrics. I admit she's no Joni and many of her videos pollute the meaning of her lyrics. But underneath all the flash is a songwriter who pours out her heart and insecurities in almost every song she writes. Forget the burning crosses and provocative video for "Like a Prayer" and listen to the lyrics. It's about a girl turning to her mother's memory for strength and guidance. Madonna has said she decided to become a songwriter after listening to "Court and Spark." She is a strong woman who has taken control of her image and career. Each album explores a different facet of music and her soul. Everyone can agree she has pushed the envelope with image manipulation and video. Many of the album reviews I read chose to criticize her hair, clothing and public persona. It's almost as if music doesn't exist. And other reviews are contradictory. One critic said "Music" was too much of the same and monotonous, while another complained it was "all over the place." Think of "Mingus" and the criticism that followed it's release. Madonna, like our beloved Joni is always willing to take a chance and hope her fans understand. After 16 years we are still talking about her. It makes me happy to look at my "M" section of my CD holder and see the "Madonna's" snuggled with the "Mitchell's" :) "I see something of myself in everyone" Joni Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 09:48:33 -0500 From: pat holden Subject: Re: 5 recent purchases... It's a nice one as you said, however, like you said, I really dont see the parallel to Joni. I found a book at the flea market called "Good Rockin' Tonight" by Colin Escott and Martin Hawkins published by St. Martin's Press. It's the most thorough, comprehensive study of Sam Phillips and Sun Records I've ever run across. Having been raised in Memphis just a few miles from Graceland I'm something of a Memphis music maniac. Anyway, on page 106 is the following reminiscence from Johnny Cash regarding touring in support of what might arguably be his worst single recorded at Sun, a treacly ballad called "Ballad of a Teenage Queen": "Dan Bass, the promo man from Quality Records [the Sun licensee in Canada] set up a Teenage Queen contest in every city. I flew into a new city each morning and did radio and television interviews. Then in the afternoon I signed records at record shops. My last promo appearance of the day, before the arrival of the Teenage Queen contestants, was to draw a name out of a box at a large department store's record counter and name the Teenage Queen and the runner up. One requirement to enter the contest was to prove the purchase of the record. I autographed hundreds and sometimes thousands of copies of that record in every city. During my concert that evening I crowned the queen and announced the first runner up. In the city of Saskatoon, the Teenage Queen died tragically, leaving the runner up to be enthroned. That runner up was already writing songs and singing. Her name was Joni Mitchell." Bug A Boo was the one which sealed it for me. A good friend has said the album isn't so great, and I should avoid. Should I? TLC's Fanmail is another album in the genre which I have discovered I really quite like after all. Jill Scott - Who is Jill Scott? is THE best R&B record of the year and certainly one of the best pop records released this year. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 23:04:33 EDT From: Relayer211@aol.com Subject: The Last Waltz I just saw "The Last Waltz" on video. What a wonderful bunch of perfomers and songs. It was great to hear and see Joni sing "Coyote".I also thought Neil Diamond did a great job.I'm a fan of his, especially his early work. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 04 Oct 2000 22:25:20 +0100 From: Nancy Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #383 Cassy, Don't know if I missed something along the way, but what does SIQUOMB stand for? It had the cellophane wrapper on it (just slit open on the edge), and what I found interesting was that the price sticker said $2.99 (from Target). I have probably had it since before I got married, so at least 20 years. I'm sure that was a great price even back then! It took awhile for my 11 year old son and I to get the turntable working, but we did it! (Actually it was the speakers that weren't working, but at the time we didn't know *what* was wrong!) These modern electronics are ridiculous; so many different buttons to accidentally push! Am looking forward to listening to all my albums when I get time (stereo is upstairs/'puter is in the basement). :-( TTYL, Nancy/IA ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Oct 2000 23:52:58 EDT From: RoseMJoy@aol.com Subject: Here's a Conversation Since so many of you are knowledgeable about Joni's songs and lyrics, who do you think Joni was talking about in her song "Conversation" from her Clouds album. Who might "She" and "He" be? I'd really like to know your opinions. I know people like to leave the cellophane to protect the looks of the cover, but a looser-fitting plastic bag serves that purpose much better.
