It looks most intriguing, judging by the top-notch singer/songwriters who are contributers. I guess they were getting this publication ready for release just as were at the height of our recent "Best Winger/Songwriter" thread. The synopsis is below. I'm quite curious about what She who Is QUOMB has to say on the topics below, discussed as they are so interestingly and often on this List. Thanks much for pointing this out, G. Good eye. Quite incidently, tickets for Paul Simon's performance in Oakland, CA go on sale in my little corner of the world this morning. He's featured in the book, too. Am I the only one who thinks there should be an international ban on the manufacture and sale of vocorders? To some of us who, shall we say, like DED least among Joni's albums, it seems WAYYY overproduced (which usually means there's a lot of "Gee, what's this thing do") and the songs have not stood the test of time as well as most of her others. "Music" does not, to my ear, have a sound any different from, or more unusual than, anything else in the electronica genre. The sound effect choices are pedestrian, predictable, and overbearing, since they are universally mixed way too "hot". So I guess what I'm saying is, "Music" isn't just a bad Madonna album -- it's a bad electronica album on top of it. The Joni purists hate DED ... the Yes purists hate 90215 ... the Richard Thompson purists hate the Mitchell Froom produced albums, and I imagine the electronica purists don't much like "Music." And neither do I, that's all. Don Rowe ===== My debut CD "Closer Now" is now available at http://www.mp3.com/donrowe __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! And 20/20 claimed to have THE answer to what they called the mystery. And claimed to have the first interview with him since he left the music business. Guess you can't believe those promos. According to this show, he was ill with tuberculosis when he was 19, but in the interview he said it was when he almost drowned in the ocean that he promised to work for God if he survived. And soon after that his brother gave him a copy of the Koran and all Cat's questions were answered, and have been answered for the last 20 years. That's so intense, his seemingly unwavering spirituality. Rather intriguing to me. I'd call that the "mystery" of Cat Stevens. I did like hearing his music again too... it really is sweet. I still get a tear in my eye. "If you can get them once, man, get them standing up when they should be sitting down, sweaty when they should be decorous, smile when they should be applauding politely... and I think you sort of switch on their brain, man, so that makes them say: 'Wait a minute, maybe I can do anything.' Whoooooo! It's life. That's what rock and roll is for; turn that switch on, and man, it can all be." "Man, if you got it today, you don't want it tomorrow, cause tomorrow never happens." This from the liner notes of his CD, "Gypsy Jazz": "As a guitarist growing up in America in the late '60s and '70s you'd expect Green to worship at the feet of Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page or John McLaughlin. Far from it. Tony's idol is of all people the Belgian gypsy jazz giant Django Reinhardt". You can add Steve and myself to the list of people who idolize the guitar artistry of Django Reinhardt. On the way to lunch and then the airport with Michael Paz, we made a quick stop at Tower Records and I picked up Tony's CD. The first paragraph of the liner notes reads: "It's not uncommon for creative people to have more than one outlet for their muse. Musicians as diverse as Felix Mendelssohn, George Gershwin, Tony Bennett and Joni Mitchell could all paint for instance." Gypsy Jazz by Tony Green, highly recommended." Hi Leslie- Tony is indeed a wonderful artist twice. His visual art is growing (much like Joni's) more each year. He is the toast of New Orleans and in Europe (as I understand). He has been on jukebox a couple of times but has not had good performances because I whink our format was a little too rushed for him. Being a live show we are always crazy and rushing around re micing things etc. He is always all acoustic usually 2 gtrs and upright bass, and it has been hard to get things just right for him. i love his stuff and have been friends with him since we were both in college at USL in Lafayette when I had a bush (as a opposed to a ponytail) and he had hair down to the middle of his back and was playing all the latest riffs by Page, Hendrix, et al. I wish I would have asked him to do something for Jonifest, but alas the show as 6 hours long already and there still wasn't enough time. Thanks for supporting New Orleans music. I caught "Conversation" the other day, and of course I was singin' and swingin' and gettin' merry like Christmas! Also, next day, I was in Edmonton, in the West Ed. Mall Waterpark, and I was in the wave pool with my father-in-law, watching someone bungee jump when all of a sudden on the sound system, on came "How Do You Stop?". Well, of course, I immediately get all excited, slap my father in law in the chest and almost knock the wind out of him, and bellow, "OMG, they are playing Joni! Hooooooweeeeeeee!" Then he just kinda looked at me while I said "Going to the hot tub to get a better listen." Hmmmm, y'all think maybe I need to get out more? LOL, you know you are a Joni freak when you try to listen to her in a public place, even though you could go home and throw the damn album on!
