It had always been a dream of mine to drive across America playing my fave songs. A car is one of the best places to listen to music IMHO. There are tons of Joni songs about travelling and so I made a tape to listen to for the aforementioned cross-Texas journey. I'm on a week's holiday and may embark on a cross-Java journey within the next day or so. Any ideas for a 12-hour Joni-filled journey? The first is a chapter on lyrics for the new Acoustic Guitar Guidebook, "Songwriting and the Guitar" (Stringletter Publishing). I'm betting it's available at your local biggest-bookstore-ever in the periodical section, although I'm not sure. All I know is that my copy arrived in the mail with my chapter inside it right next to other chapters by David Crosby, Patty Larkin, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, and more. That was a good trip to the mailbox to say the least..." Anyone know anything about it? i'd like to see. This from the liner notes of his CD, "Gypsy Jazz": "As a guitarist growing up in America in the late '60s and '70s you'd expect Green to worship at the feet of Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page or John McLaughlin. Far from it. Tony's idol is of all people the Belgian gypsy jazz giant Django Reinhardt". You can add Steve and myself to the list of people who idolize the guitar artistry of Django Reinhardt. On the way to lunch and then the airport with Michael Paz, we made a quick stop at Tower Records and I picked up Tony's CD. The first paragraph of the liner notes reads: "It's not uncommon for creative people to have more than one outlet for their muse. Musicians as diverse as Felix Mendelssohn, George Gershwin, Tony Bennett and Joni Mitchell could all paint for instance." Gypsy Jazz by Tony Green, highly recommended. Leslie M. The album is not for the creator's dissemination, as the liner notes point out, but its mystery is just too tantalizing to leave alone, especially since Joni hints at the importance of Centerpiece, that 1958 nugget she so engeniusly includes in the song. The basic theme throughout the record, from what I can tell, is a portrait of suburban normality (in all his bourgeoise dullness) in opposition to rebellion or nonconformity. One could even argue that a landscape described in the sneaky title track, full of segregated lawns and rooms full of untouched Chip And Dale, breeds a yearning to rebel, particularly from a female perspective. Yet Joni gives the lady a choice, calling her will to stay with the master "a love of some kind." She is never a trapped victim. It's a theme seen many times in Joni's work, but it is especially apparent on The Hissing Of Summer Lawns. For example "In France They Kiss On Main Street" is the struggle between youthful idealism and society's hierarchies, be it churches or schools, and the ensuing middle class circumstance. In "Harry's House" the kept lady in the ranch house on the hill returns (perhaps it is a more domestic version of Edith or Scarlet) only this time it's her master who we see, roaming from air port to continental suite, distracted, disgusted and broken. Joni turns on the lady and makes her unsympathetic, giving her enormous power over Harry and his house. When the song disolves into that wonderful, jazzy "Centerpiece" (the centerpiece of the song, actually) we see the total irony in it. Not only because Joni Mitchell (woman of heart and mind) is singing these naive and almost sexist lyrics, but because we come to understand that the naivity is deliberate and intensional; "Shining as she reeled him in..." The lady's intent is to build all her dreams around Harry and his house - an image which is shattered when we hear Joni mocking her incessant and repetative inquiries: "When will you be home Harry? Boy, I sure am sick of that sofa. When will you be home Harry? Nothing's any good!" Just as the album opened on a note of conflict, so too does it close. Shadows and Light is a rendering of all the polarities the listeners have been exposed to throughout the record. There was discussion a few weeks back regarding Joni on the radio, or in the store. I have heard Joni in more grocery stores than anywhere else. First I heard "Edith and the Kingpin," and then a year or two later "The Circle Game," both in grocery stores. I also heard "Edith" in a mall. The reason I thought of this is because I just heard "Conversation" while shopping in a department store this weekend. Unfortunately, my companion did not share my enthusiasm when I heard Joni's voice while rummaging through the bargain bin. I am 20, so I wasn't a radio-listener when radio last paid attention to Joni. As a result, I've had few chances to hear her on the air. A week ago was the first time--I heard "Sometimes I'm Happy" on an NPR Jazz show. At first I just assumed it was another version of the song--I had the volume down, as I was studying at the time--but when I found out it was Joni, I became very excited. As usual, I could find no one in sight to share my delight. So now I share it with you. :) Eric ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Oct 2000 18:12:51 -0400 From: Heather Subject: Re: A little story (SJC) This is so cool, Cassy! Diltz Exhibit in San Diego (VLJC) Well, I finally broke away for a brief period last night and zipped down to the Debra Owen gallery in downtown San Diego to catch the Henry Diltz photographic exhibit. The exhibit itself was in a narrow portion of the gallery and it was quite a small crowd -- maybe 25 people while I was there. The show was just great -- a real soul-soother for me. I tried not to look too geeky by zoning right in on the Joni photos and enjoyed many I hadn't seen before -- a great portrait of Paul and Linda McCartney (that the program said was on the cover of Life magazine) and some beauties of Jackson Browne (I remember well thinking in the '70s what a dreamboat that guy was), Linda Ronstadt, Mama Cass. I really enjoyed all the CSN photos. Need I say how great the Joni photos were (although one entire wall should have been devoted to her ; ) Henry was there talking to a small group of people and helping to identify, I think, some members of the Eagles on a photo. He walked by me once, but, as usual in that situation, I couldn't bring myself to say anything to him. I'd even brought along one of my copies of Leonore Fleisher's book on Joni from back in 1976 because it had some of his photos of Joni in it. Well, I left it in the car and just felt weird going out to get it for him to sign it. One of the museum's employees came up to me from time to time to earnestly ask if I had any questions, politely hand me a program, in a stage whisper point out Henry to me. I told him that I knew who Henry was, being a longtime fan of Joni's, and that the exhibit was just great and was my antidote to "Almost Famous" which I'd found disappointing. Made-up band and made-up songs which meant nothing to me. This, I said, gesturing around the exhibit, means something to me. Oh, he said, and walked away. You understand, don't you? Back to suburbia and yelling at kids to get ready for bed . . . Lindsay P.S. The back of the program listed quite a few cities that the exhibit will go to.
