Adcock" Subject: James Taylor and Joni I haven't posted anything significant for a while, but felt like commenting on this. I'm sure this has probably been discussed at length before, but I was listening to Mud Slide Slim & The Blue Horizon today, and the first track really struck me as being a song about Joni. I've heard Carole King say that Tapestry, Mud Slide Slim and Joni's Blue were all recorded about the same time, and not too far from each other (in terms of distance between recording studios) which is why they collaborated so much. But it seems fairly obvious that "Blue" was in James' mind when he wrote this song (Love Has Brought Me Around). Feel free to disagree at will, but the lines that struck me are: "Don't come to me with your sorrows anymore I don't need to know how bad you're feeling today" "When my sky was full of grey, and my day was full of blue There was nothing I could do, to see myself through Now my head is full of springtime, and my heart is full of you Goodbye lonely Blue, it shall all come true Miss November, I detect a frown Close your eyes, and turn it upside down" Anyone have any comments? Hell P.S. I'd like everyone to stop talking about Jonifest now please. It's bad enough that I wasn't there (again) without seeing all these posts about how wonderful it was. Alternatively, could someone please write that they hated it, and will never go to another one ever again? It might just cheer me up! P.P.S. I'm joking about Jonifest - sort of. _____________________________ "To have great poets, there must be great audiences too." - Walt Whitman hell@ihug.co.nz Visit the NBLs (Natural Born Losers) at: http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~hell/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 07:32:42 -0400 From: "Sue Cameron" Subject: Barbara Walters interview Watched a rerun of BW's interview with Mike Meyers last night. When speaking of his father's death Mike said "Like the great Canadian poet Joni Mitchell said 'You don't know what you've got 'till it's gone'". I thought this was unique in that he quoted her as a poet, not a songwriter, and his fierce nationalism for Canada is so lovingly obvious. Warning........NJC Content! To those of you in England I hope the petrol situation ends soon. I can't imagine what would happen here if we had no gasoline for our autos. I was too young to feel the effects of the fuel crunch in '74 and I can't begin to think of what it would be like paying more than $6.00 or $7.00 dollars per gallon. You are in my thoughts during this trying time. I think given the tone of the song, the opening lines are pretty bold, I mean typically one would say that they would be willing to always "be there" and listen to their sorrows and troubles, (and pack their suspenders at a moment's notice as well!). I sat down to eat my lunch, flipped on the tube and the new realTV courtroom show, "Power of Attorney" was on. There was a female lawyer in closing arguments saying about the defendant "to quote Joni Mitchell, he's a rambler and a gambler and a sweet talking ladies man" At least it wasn't paved paradise again! : - ) - -- Phyliss mailto:pward@datacourse.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 16:57:10 EDT From: JRMCo1@aol.com Subject: Cameron Crowes About Joni on "Charlie Rose" Did anyone else see Charlie Rose's interview with Cameron Crowe, director of the new "Almost Famous" movie, on PBS? Man, Crowe is a huge Joni Mitchell fan! He was quoting her lyrics (He said that Shirley McClain reminds him of Joni's lyric "Laughing and crying, you know it's the same release") And talking to Rose at length about Joni's influence on him from when he was writing for Rolling Stone forward. Crowe is married to Nancy Wilson of "Heart," by the way. Plus, I read that Kate Hudson, Goldie Hawn's daughter who plays Penny Lane in the film, listened to Joni ever morning of filming to get into character. We already know Goldie is a big Joni fan, based on her filmed comments that proceeded the TNT Joni tribute. Cameron Crowe and "Almost Famous" were the cover stories for last Sunday's "Datebook" entertainment section of the San Francisco Chronicle, too. An article therein talks about photographer Joel Bernstein, who was apparently a constant companion to Crowe when he was writing for RS. To quote: "Bernstein got his start as Joni Mitchell's photographer when he was still in high school and she was an unknown Los Angeles folkie." Joel, 48, has been Neil Young's photographer and archivist for some time now, according to the article. Of particular interest to me was part of the interview was Crowe that talked about one of his earlier films "Jerry Maguire." Many of you scoffed when I suggested that a line in that movie ("You complete me") might've been inspired by Joni's lyric. Well, now I'm certain it was! Ha! I'm looking forward to seeing this movie. Thanks for the early report from the premiere, by the way, whoever the kind soul who posted it is. "Almost Famous" opens nationwide on September 29. - -Julius NP: Joni's "Urge" ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 18:52:53 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: Cameron Crowes About Joni on "Charlie Rose" In a message dated 9/13/00 5:18:17 PM Eastern Daylight Time, JRMCo1@aol.com writes: << "Almost Famous" opens nationwide on September 29. >> Sneak preview here tomorrow night. I find the following pretty amazing - >To quote: "Bernstein got his start as Joni Mitchell's >photographer when he was still in high school and she was >an unknown Los Angeles folkie." Joel, 48, has been Neil >Young's photographer and archivist for some time now, >according to the article. Geeeeez, that would have made Bernstein only about 15 years old when he started hanging out with the Laurel Canyon gang! Lucky guys, that Cameron and Joel! A collaboration that never happened...There is a book entitled "The Joni Mitchell Companion: Four Decades of Commentary", edited by Stacey Luftig / NY, Schirmer Books, 2000, which compiles interviews and commentary on Miss Herself. One article in particular, reprinted from Grammy Magazine, Spring 1996, offers insight into Joni's relationship with Miles Davis. Apparently he didn't turn down her many offers to collaborate because of race, as she had thought, but because he had a problem with "words" getting in the way. Isn't that sad. There could have been a brilliant Mitchell/Davis oeuvre in the discography, if only she had found this out in time. Check out your bookstore, fellow fans!
