For now, here are some of the highlights for me: - - everyone gathering in Ashara's kitchen, while Ashara orgaized everything including us - - WallyK and I screaming and hugging when we spotted each other (you sly devil, Wally - you're even more handsome than I remember!) - - singing Get Together with Victor on bass and ChuckE on keyboards and everyone on vocals (I really hope the tape captures the magic of that; while singing I had to keep telling myself not to let my voice break, it was just so emotional) - - the "guys'" doing Amy - - dancing to La Bamba - - peeling shrimp (ok, so maybe not a highlight, but the company was great :-) - - one extraordinary performance after another (I can't wait for this year's boxed set!!!) - - Rose presenting me with a signed Joni lithograph - I can't even describe that moment, walking up to the stage. Maybe I'll let other describe it. Maybe you just had to be there. - - talking with Brian and Mags - - Victor singing a song of his to me underneath the streetlight - - lots o' hugs It was great! It was amazing! It was fun! Oh damn, it's over... lots of love Anne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 5 Sep 2000 09:32:19 +1000 From: "Alan Lorimer" Subject: Court and Spark Court and Spark has been playing in my mind over and over again lately. Here's the judge's exact quote - "It's been said - and sung - that 'you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone.' Yet where state environmental law applies, the opposite is true: Citizens and decision makers must, in fact, be informed of that they have before it's gone." I had met a few JMDler's in Boston for the BSN Tour, so I was glad to see a couple of familiar faces when I arrived at Ashara's front door Saturday morning. The visitors that descended on her home the day or night before were beginning to rouse from their sleep and breakfast was moving along in shifts. Maggie at the kitchen sink, Ashara at her Kitchen table organizing and Victor serenading many still half asleep with his guitar in hand. I began to see what this weekend was going to be like. One filled with alot of Music and alot of warm welcomes, as everyone immediately introdudes themselves upon seeing you for the first time. Of course, as promised, Ashara's welcome was with HUGS (even while she is busy). And busy she was with the weather not cooperating for any outdoor activities. Ashara was organizing a massive move to a pre-arranged location several miles from her home. Amazed is what I felt, when it was pulled off without incident . A Church Auditorium was transformed into a music/dining/shrimp peeling/raffle/ and whatever you name venue for all to mill around and listen to some of these talented musicians that belong to the list. I would go into the program, but at this point , I am still trying to put names to some of the faces and would not even attempt to try to give the details of the order in which songs were played and by whom. But a couple of special entertainers really knocked me out. They were Claudia and Paz and Victor. There were also others that were talented, but I can not name them all at this point. I would need a reference list to recall them all. It was trully wonderful being a part of this. There were small side shows outdoors where you could sing or play in the privacy of a found corner or outdoor stairwell. There was fun everywhere. This list membership is amazingly talented. I made a wise decision not to play my guitar in the presence of this group, but I did become a bit more motivated to put more time into my guitar in the event I return to another JONIFEST ( subliminal message there ). I could go on and on, about the good food, but I dont consider myself a very good food critic. It was nicely presented and organized by the culinary queen, Maggie. You could tell that she knocked herself out to ensure that both buffets that were put out were top shelf. It was awesome. The daytime music festivities didn't end there, because as soon as the Church Auditorium was emptied and cleaned up ( which was also amazingly done in a short tiime), it was back to Ashara's, vehicles emptied, and it just carried on in smaller groupings back at her home. Paz on the quitar, with an occassional guest performance by Allisson and I think it was Victor that finished the evening playing. I began my day listening to his playing and ended it that way as well. Did I mention that there were a couple of international travelers? John Van Tiel from the Netherlands and Wally K all the way from Argentina. What talent that they both posssess as well. John gave us a beautiful rendition of Woodstock. I don't think I have heard one as beautiful as his. Wally K. also gave us a sample of his wonderful voice. I was stunned at the level of talent in that one room. See, I was afraid that I would forget some of the performances at the Auditorium. Alot of this weekends events are coming back to me in small doses as I reflect on it. And I am sure that there will be more to remember for a long time. Saturday turned to Sunday ( as it so often does), and the plans seemed to be to head out to Plum Island for a send off party at ATTY MAYS. Well, for those that never saw ATTY MAYS, I can give you my run on it. It is a beachcomber type bar, within walking distance to the Ocean. It has seen many a day that wishes it was repainted. As soon as you walk in you notice that it is completely decorated with nostalgic items. Not your TGIF type of atmosphere, it is actually the real yard sale/garage items that you never knew what to do with. Well ATTY MAY knows what to do with it. She'll hang anything anywhere. Thing is, it works well because there is so much of it. What I like to describe as eclectic. To bottom line it, its so not together that it works well together. Anways, we all had dinner, we all went for strolls on the beach and many became part of the band again. Many of the members played and sang until the house band reclaimed their instruments . Then it became a dancing mad house. I would have loved for this to have been a weeklong thing ( another subliminal message inserted ), but I had to get on the road as did many of the members. Many said their good byes from ATTY MAYS and it was obvious that some had a hard time saying goodbye because of the closeness that was shared. I drove back to Rhode Island with so many things running through my head, that I wonder when I will come down this week and will the crash burn? I am hoping that the memories that I have collected this one weekend will be there for a long time. So if I burn, I hope its like being branded. I loved it. It was more than I could have ever described. I could never do it justice. Well, I am sorry if I took alot of space here on a post, but I had to talk to someone that understands these JONI things. You all were selected. And finally, aren't I the fortunate one to be associated with so many genuinely nice people? Many thanks to all that I met and showed me their kind ways. Still trying to get over the disappointment oif having had our flkight to Saskatoon canceled for the oepning of the "voices" exhibit, Rusty and I decided to give it one more try. We booked a flight for Friday evening of Labor Day weekend. We thought that this trip might just work out, as our work schedules changed and we were able to get a standby flight early Friday morning. No problems on the first leg of our journey. The second leg proved to be even better, as our flight into Saskatoon arrived 30 minutes early. We quickly dasjhed to our hotel, dropped our stuff off and walked over to the Mendel. Within minutes of being there, one of the guards began talking to us and asked where we were from. We told him NYC and he was impressed that we had traveled so far to see the exhibit. He asked us to follow him, as he wanted us to meet some people. It seems that 3 of Joni's first cousins had just arrived. He introduced us to them and we spoke for several minutes. Then the 5 of us had a tour of the exhibit (they are now offering a guided tour of the exhibit several times a day). Throughout the tour, Joni's cousins (the cousins are related on Joni's paternal side--Bill is the brother of their mother) regaled us with stories and commentary. According to the cousins, Joni looks like her paternal grandfather; Joni has never liked doctors and was into self-healing as a child--they said that she used visualization when she had polio; they talked about her fondness for her Uncle Lyle (mother's side of the family); and confirmed that Myrtle can be as tough as Joni portrays her to be. (BTW, the cousins were having dinner with Bill and Myrtle that evening--unfortunately Rusty and I had other plans :-). The rest of our visit in Saskatoon went very smoothly--we had a wonderful time visiting the gallery (4 times in 3 days); driving up to North Battlesford; and hiking in Wey. . . we can never remember the name of the . . . Heritage Park. We were both very impressed with the exhibit. IMHO, album covers and photos don't do Joni's art justice. We were both taken by her technique--especially her ability to "capture" light--and sheer virtuosity. She doesn't copy a style, she embraces it and makes it a very personal statement. We are glad to have been able to see the exhibit--just sorry that we missed out on the opportunity to have met and shared the experience with the other JMDLers who went for the opening. Glad you and Rusty made it to 'Toon town and took in the show. Also especially cool that you met up with Joni's kin and got those cool details! Hi jonipops, The cheese is green. My nose is green. I am green with envy for the lucky festers hanging out together in New England. I can't think of a more wonderful way to throw a party than to have Joni as the theme. --To do that with so many nice, beautiful people who also happen to be ture devotees of the finest woman singer on the planet, well.... no wonder I am seeing green. O well, on to today's request... During the tour for Wild Things Run Fast, among the usual trinkets of posters, t-shirts, etc., there was a really fine tour book with great photographs of Joni, radiant and smiling with very spunky hair. I know it would be asking the world to know if anyone has an extra copy of the concert book? So I will simply ask, does anyone in the Chicago area have a copy that I could look at? I bought one during the Chicago show at Poplar Creek. (The second time I got to see her live... The first was Alpine Valley for Shadows and Light.) My recollection of the Chicago show was it pailed in comparison to the first. But the second half of the show was brilliant. The opening set (lacking Jaco and Metheny) was verrrrry rocky. Way too 'pop' for my tastes. Although she gave belting up-beat performances of the WTRF material. In the second set, Joni performed mostly on her own. She even sat down to the piano and did a phenominal take on For Free. ( including the new arrangement, new lyrics, and that dissonant twist on the "honking of the CAAAAAARS"). It sent me home beaming with joy. Anyway, I had a copy of the concert book. Photos of her with pastels, lights, and abstract shapes similar to bright balloons smeared across the background. There was even a shot of her "hanging" hereself on a man's tie she was wearing. Anyway, I took it to school one day to make a silk-screen of the image and some RAT stole it. Anyone have a copy? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 05 Sep 2000 00:57:30 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Oh My GAWD !!!!! OH MY GAWD!!!!!
