Yes this is a very astute statement, imo--as a lover of & writer about the Moon, I think it is the symbol of our emotions & maybe something touching on the mystical & magical. It merely depends how you use the word. Read all of those lyrics from Joni. Im not sure any Joni album is her "greatest" just as no Van Gough painting is really his "greatest". Someone is surely entitled to say that because it may be that way for them but is more than likely isnt for everyone. Personally I think several of her albums are all equal yet different and thats because they are related to the evolution of her art skills. Joni Mitchels art has been a work in progress and evolution for her entire career which is what has made her different and why I love her. <<>> This was in my very humble opinion just another life phase that Joni was going through. I have stated that I believe (dont have any way of knowing) the title refers to some crossroads she had encountered in her life and her art. The imagery of many of the songs is soaked in this probability. I hasten to add that I also believe strongly that part of what made the songs on this album what they are is the fact that she had made a musical transition to different "tools" in the form of instruments and effects. In the past I have tried out a new pedal or effect of some sort and it takes my basic song and forms it into something completely unexpected. Its one of the thrills of songwriting. I dont think Amelia sounds the same or conveys the same feeling on certain instruments as it does with the ones she used on the album. While the thought of a great sax player doing the song solo gives me chills up my spine it wouldnt sound the same. It wouldnt feel the "same".When Jason Marsalis did Shades of Scarlet Conquering in New Orleans for instance it blew my mind but it was very different than on its album track. here was a whole new way that the song could actually affect me. <<,On the other hand, Hejira leaves me with the feeling that she has rejected the flame, doused or abandoned it completely and prefers the coolness of the ice now.>> I more or less chalked the photo up to something that was done based on circumstance not necessarily a case of Joni thinking that the picture for this album must be a certain landscape. I still dont get the ice skater as relating to any words in the album for instance. I know Yoko could clue me in to the deep meaning but.... <>> Is Hejira better than NRH or TI or STAS?? Personally I dont think so. They all have their allure. I also think that confirmation of what I said above is evident in NRH. She returned to her basic instrument ensemble and created one of the best albums she has ever done. I also see a song like Havana off off TTT as being more or less the culmination of her prior six albums experiences in both instruments and writing. She needed all of her musical experiences to be able to write that song. marcel deste np. I think she exhibited greater production skills, sharper vocal technique, more melodic songwriting, and more accomplished guitar playing on certain albums other than Hejira. Still, I keep coming back to the whole package and the way she presented it to us. If pressed I would probably say that the birth of my first child was my "greatest" moment. But there's comfort in melancholy... :-) OK Kakki, my pat answer is "duality." You know, when discussing Joni, it's always safe to say "she's portraying some duality." :-) Agreed, many of the songs bring up unpleasant, difficult soul-searching decisions. She's attracted to Coyote, but realizes their paths are too dissimilar for anything long-term. She pleads with the ghost of Amelia, wondering if they'll *all* be false alarms. Meeting Furry brought her a swift dose of stark reality. The Strange Boy was intriguing and insightful, but they couldn't make it work. She reflects on the greener pastures of Sharon's chosen lifestyle. And she flat out tells us she's "got the blues inside and outside my head." So she sets us up with these dark situations before turning it all around and giving us hope. On the original vinyl, the song "Hejira" ended side 1. I don't think this is by accident. The song is so incredibly powerful! The awesome lyrics...the whole song is a masterpiece. But cutting to the final verse: "A defector from the petty wars, until love sucks me back that way." I feel that Joni has admitted that she's been trying to escape all the crap...the petty wars...but knows that love WILL come back again. She's faced up to all the trials and leaves us with the final thought that love will never leave her. That's the feeling I always had when that first side ended...recognizing there will be dark times but always looking for the light. >On the other hand, Hejira leaves me with the feeling that she >has rejected the flame, doused or abandoned it completely and >prefers the coolness of the ice now. Perhaps Joni did begin to look differently at life's situations about this time. Previously she poured out her being with the nakedly transparent "Blue" and the oft-wrenching "For The Roses." Maybe by the time she released Hejira she had become a little more jaded and it shows. A more mature outlook? Still, her flame burns. It's not out by a long shot. Rather than a forest fire (FTR) I see it more like a Bunsen burner where one can control the intensity. ;-) In concluding the album she gives us the stunningly beautiful melodies and soaring musical arrangements on "Refuge of the Roads." To me this song says "I'm Joni Mitchell...I've been through some rough spots...I'm now recalling all the things I experienced on my cross-country hejira...and I've come away intact...I can face anything." I sense an epiphany when she pulled off into the forest and heard her fate turn turn turn. She's humbled now. "Couldn't see me here least of all." Resigned, perhaps. Ready for anything? You bet. Kakki, would it be fair to say there was a loss of innocence at this point? Regrettable maybe but inevitable. The boy, who could not swim, told Italian news agency ANSA he fell from the boat as he was sailing with his father in the gulf of Manfredonia, off the southern Italian coast. As he was slipping under the water, something pushed him up. ``When I realized it was Filippo, I hung on to him,'' the boy said, referring to the dolphin. The mammal carried the boy to the boat and swam away. The dolphin has lived in the gulf's waters for years, locals say, and has been dubbed Filippo. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 2000 16:29:47 EDT From: IVPAUL42@aol.com Subject: Re: hitler and jesus In a message dated 8/30/00 12:21:34 PM Eastern Daylight Time, wallykai@interserver.com.ar writes: << oh but kerrry and paul! it's the lyrics of TALK TO ME by JONI MITCHELL? can you be so NOT into joni mitchell????????????? wallyk >> I realize it's from the lyrics, but regardless, it is still sick to want to invite Hitler to dinner, no matter what Joni's lyrics say. Another favorite from C&S (which is full of them) is: Me in my frightened silence Thinkin' I don't understand On another thread from a week or so ago (or longer - I'm playing catch up on the list!), there was an episode of Thirty Something (which is on my list of great TV, up there with Northern Exposure and My So Called Life, even if a lot of people thought is was a yuppie indulgence, it was wonderful to see characters who actually engage in thought on the tube) where Ellen was talking to her shrink about being over the hill and mate-less and begins quoting: I wanna knit you a sweater I wanna write you a love letter I wanna make you feel better I wanna make you feel free It was so lifelike to have a character spouting song lyrics. You almost never see that in TV and movies. And it happened to be a lyric I knew and loved. I'd love to have that on tape. It seemed that the song was absolutely perfect for the theme of the episode, though it's fading from memory. I remember another time where they used "I Wish I Had a River" (you purists will have to forgive me if I have titles wrong - many of the songs I have on tapes made by myself or friends when vinyl was dying and I couldn't afford CDs, so I didn't have covers and liner notes to pore over) in the same series for a Christmas episode. As I recall it was a rather maudlin episode, and again, the song choice was beautifully matched. For a split second I thought that Government was going to be held accountable for its actions! Oh, I almost forgot- they also voted to help the baseball entertainment company build a new stadium. Why? Because the football entertainment company got one! That plus they wanted something that looked old fashioned. Not 60s old fashioned- the old concrete swoop of Riverfront is the Wrong kind of old-fashioned. They wanted the Right kind of old-fashioned facility to deliver their product- a brick stadium. Arrghhhh! As if someone's going to say, "Hey Joan, why don't we take in a Reds game?
