I have been really enjoying the discussions. The interpretations of lyrics have been very interesting. I have reconsidered some of my own initial ideas after reading some of the posts. I love that about Joni's writing. I have been listening to her music for more than 25 years and her work never stops developing. I can think that I know one of her songs inside and out, when suddenly I am struck with a whole new image. I gather from recent postings that "A Strange Boy" and "Blue Motel Room" have not been heard live. I have seen Joni seven times. I have also collected live material when I can find it. There are some songs I have never heard her do, other than studio recordings, and I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they have ever been performed at a concert or appearance. 1. Man From Mars 2. The Sire of Sorrow (Job's Sad Song) 3. The Windfall (Everything for Nothing) 4. Nothing Can Be Done 5. Two Gray Rooms 6. A Bird That Whistles 7. The Beat of Black Wings 8. The Tea Leaf Prophecy (Lay Down Your Arms) 9. Impossible Dreamer 10. Chair in the Sky 11. Sweet Sucker Dance 12. Off Night Back Street 13. Court and Spark 14. Down to You 15. Car on a Hill 16. Well, of your selections, I can only confirl 3; A Chair in the Sky, Car on a Hill, and River. Of the minimal touring that's been done since 1988, thje year of "Chalkmark," a lot of the 80's material has been left untouced as far as bringing them out live. Best I can do. Email me if you want more info. Thanks -Chris. There are so many references to, even quotes from, Catholicism and Christianity in this song. I know these tend to pop up elsewhere in Joni's lyrics, but they're really strong here. "Never before was a man so kind...so redeeming"; Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done"; "He sees a stray in the wilderness, I see how far I've wandered"; "The killer nails are ringing". Then there are the lines "In Exxon blue, In radiation rose"...??? I have a few ideas about this song, but as I said, I don't feel certain that I get it. Help! Please! She is so damn talented, and there's not been a peep from her in ages. Two of the most memorable gigs I've ever been to were Robin Holcomb in Seattle in about 91/92, when I'd never heard of her and went on spec - and was blown away by her songs, her playing and a band that included Wayne Horvitz and Bill Frisell; and the New York Composers Orchestra, which I saw in about 96, and featured stunning pieces by Horvitz and Bobby Previte, and an extraordinary piano solo from Ms Holcomb herself. And Bob, who described Hejira as the finest song on the finest album ever - you are spot on my friend! Every couplet or quatrain contains wisdom and poetry, and every time I listen to it I alight on something different and marvel anew. If I had to pick just one line from that album [and I may have said this before] it would be "I'm porous with travel fever" - who else could even begin to touch that? No, I can't say I do, but I did purchase her self-titled release when I was in college, and remember having a little trouble easing into it. This is probably why I don't own it anymore. If you find anything out, please let us know, as I have learned a valuable lesson over the years - it's those artists and releases that are 'difficult to ease into' that prove to be my faves over time. =). DJRD is a prime example. I also wanted to throw in a big THANKS to those who responded to my irrate 'life's to short' post last night. I might have thought to wait a while and get more of a feel for the dynamics of these already established relations here on the list, but that would be expecting me to behave in a way I never have - with caution...not my strength. I hope I didn't offend anyone, after all, I was merely trying to say that we should be kind to one another. Thanks again. While I'm here I must inquire again about Video Tree #1; I need one. If anyone is willing to help out, I'd be very grateful. I will trade audio for it. Email me privately for what's available. Once again, I will also ask if anyone knows of a guy named Josh Fensel. We used to be in touch and do Joni trades in the mid 90's and then lost one another; at that time, he was living in Ohio. I just thought maybe he'd been part of the list at one time or another.
