I guess it's because the first time I listen to NRH and Cherokee Louise. I vividly remember getting chills and getting tears in my eyes. That song really shook me to the core and set me in a mood. Then plays RDC which stick out like a sore thumb ya know? It just struck me wrong. The song itself isn't a disaster, it just would have fit better elsewhere. Take TI for example; there are no "out of place" songs on that CD. "Ray's dad's..." on NRH is like "Lead Balloon" on TTT. Of course I really like "Lead Balloon". And I really like DED. In the album notes, Joni says that the song is a "Tom Wolfeism".. now i know that he wrote the Bonfire of the Vanities..and was a writer from the sixties on..but could anyone explain to me (the simple minded person).. how the meaning of the song ties in with Tom wolfe..and etc.. Henry" Subject: Unreleased Joni... hi julian, how ya doin'? wow, it's really quite a list when you write it all out isn't it. I think you pretty much said it all on point #5... please definitely include me in 'everybody else'. ;o) there are two anomalies I sometimes ponder: 1) why is it that brian moss, michael heath and myself are the only acknowledged people onlist who knew Joni from the coffeehouse days *and we are all from the same exact coffeehouse which was in a relatively small city in MI!* 2) with the only exception that I know of, that being the club47 set, all the rarities we have are from the second fret. in both cases, the same weird thing... if bri, cul and I got online, did our first websearch for Joni like everyone else and ended up on jmdl, it makes sense there would be others from among all the other coffeehouses she played on the circuit back then... where are they? likewise, here we have all these recordings from the same 2 places, the great majority from the 2nd fret, and it just makes sense that there have to be more... but where are they?! whether it's because by the time I met her in mid '66, she'd already ceased playing them publicly or just because my memory of 32yrs ago is so faulty, I can't say but for the record I never heard her do most of the songs on the wanted list... ever. the ones I *can* recall or at least *think* (pretty sure) she was playing back then are a follows: Poor Sad Baby What Will You Give Me Who Has Seen the Wind Day After Day Here Today Gone Tomorrow The Wizard of Is Little David Moon in the Mirror of these the last three are the ones I can recall most clearly: - -The Wizard of Is, as I've commented before, was a song she wrote to the exact tune and chords of Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne'. I learned this guitar part from her but only so I could play Suzanne... been kicking myself for years that I didn't bother to learn the lyrics when they were right there in my grasp. - -Little David was actually 'Play, Little David' and was an upbeat praising of a favorite folk guitarist she knew from the circuit and who jammed with everybody named David Rey or Ray... - -Moon in the Mirror... ah, this is assuredly our greatest loss. this song was one of her most popular, I would say her third most requested song, in the class just under TCG and UFG, along with NITC, MMT, CIK, and JLM. finding a recording of this one would most definitely be the most valuable of all of them. I am surprised that it isn't among the sets we have. this was one that Joni played every night without fail. please let me know if you find anymore, ok? tanx, :~) pat NP: Dark End Of The Street - Ry Cooder http://homepages.go.com/~badwolff/albums/album1/ >Hello Everyone! I'm just about halfway done with the first "Ureleased Joni Compilation" tape and have really started to work out what songs I'm missing or have but need another copy. So far the lineup goes: Brandy Eyes Mr. Blue Eastern Rain Born to Take the Highway Carnival in Kenora Winterlady Blue on Blue Come to the Sunshine London Bridge Ballerina Vallerie Go Tell the Drummer Man Dr. Junk the Dentist Man Hunter Looking Out for Love Wilderland The songs that I have but seem to be needing a fix-up or better copies are: 1) The complete version of "Just Like Me" that is on the WMMR Archives Vol. # 1, second side....for some reason my copy is all warped and wobbly sounding and the other versions that I have have the beginning cut off. 2)My "Club 47" tape is on loan to a friend who is transfering it to a CDR...I like my tape much better than the CDR that I have of it due to the fact that my tape seems to be at a normal speed and has much less hiss. On this tape is: "The Way It Is" and "The Gift of the Magi"...so with this one I shall be playing the waiting game. 3)There is a song that I have that I've been calling "I Don't Know Where I Stand"...I don't see it listed anywhere...Is this the real title? Forgive my ignorance, but is this on some official release that I've completely blanked out on? It is such a great song! Somebody set me strait on this one. 4) Does anyone out there have a complete version of "Melody in Your Name"? The versions that I have are cut off before Joni can finnish the second of three verses. This too is a gorgeous tune. and finally.... 5)There are a bunch of other tunes that I would (and so would everyone else) LOVE to get me hands on. Is there a person or place that I can go to that may be able to direct me to the show with these missing "grail" songs? Looking at the copyrights to some of the songs I've noticed that most of her unreleased songs are from 1966 to 1969....What tapes am I missing that are from this era that might have these songs: Ballad in Blue Cara's Castle Daisy Summer Piper Day After Day Endless Summer Free Darling Gemini Twin Here Today Gone Tomorrow I Won't Cry Jeremy Julie's Mom Kelly Lazy Summer Little David Midnight Cowbow Song Moon in the Mirror Poor Sad Baby Song to a Daydreamer Straw-Flower Man What Will You Give Me Who Has Seen the Wind and The Wizard of Is. As you can see...I am about a quarter of the way through with this project. As soon as I get a full tapes worth...or 74 minutes worth. I'll send it out to be "treed up". I must say that it is already a beautiful thing to play this for friends and it's like it is a whole new early Joni album being released for the first time....There is a strong undercurrent of psychedelic, wide-eyed mysticism to the whole sound and message of the tape. Any thoughts or suggestions or donations would be much appreciated. Thank you all so much for helping me get this far. We are here now, Chris, Colin & John, Steve, Phil, Jamie, Martin, Les (Ross), Azeem, Sarah and me, sitting in the warm sun, listening to Joni, getting ready for a cook-out, then the music will begin! And more importantly-- does it work? Is it good? > > eric k.d. can also belt out a country song or (in her early days) rock out with the best of them. I don't think she's going to be willing to conform to any one category (just like someone else we know). 'Drag' also has a couple of lighter moments - The Air That I Breathe, The Joker - k.d. can express joy along with the best of them. Does music or art *have* to be dark & gloomy to be good? Invincible Summer is all about the stage of romance that Joni sings about in the first two songs of BSN. At last my love has come along, you're my thrill and life is all sunshine. I've never been really impressed with much of k.d.'s original songs except for 'Absolute Torch &Twang' which had some great material on it. But I think 'Invincible Summer' has some really nice songs on it. So far this is my favorite: Simple (Pitch/lang) Flawless light in a darkening air Alone and shining there Love will not elude you Love is simple I worship this tenacity And the beautiful struggle we're in Love will not elude us Love is simple Be sure to know that All in love is ours And love, as a philosophy is simple I am calm in oblivion Calm, as I ever have been Love will not elude me Love is simple Be sure to know that All in love is ours...is ours... That all in love is ours And love, as a philosophy is simple... And ours The production of the record is similar to that of Drag - it has kind of a retro feeling to it but since I don't keep up with trends in popular music, I will leave it to others to describe it better. Enough of that since this is not the k.d. lang list. I recommend this record, however. Don't be afraid of letting some joy into your lives & record collections, people. And isn't The Only Joy in Town also on Night Ride Home? And how about that title track? How dare Joni include an empty little ditty about lusting after a lady killer on the Spanish Steps and a pretty little tune about a drive on the beach on a pretty night on the same record with Slouching and Cherokee Louise? With crickets, no less! What was she thinking??? Mark in Seattle meaning no offense, just getting in a little affectionate teasing (everybody has a right to their own opinion even if it is the wrong opinion! ;-) ) np: Etta James 'Don't Cry Baby' from the Millennium Collection - Joni was right - there is God in some of the notes this woman sings ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Aug 2000 16:18:57 -0400 From: "Ken (slarty)" Subject: Joni Sim Paintings If you enjoy playing the game "The Sims" or if you're just curious, I've posted some Joni Mitchell Sim paintings which you can incorporate into the game.
