Some would > argue. > > marcel OK, I have to jump in on this conversation! I happen to think that Good Friends is a great song with very good meaning. First of all, I recall Joni explaining at one point something to the effect of: people interpreting her songs to fit their own lives and what it means for them. I have a relationship with my cousin that very much fits every aspect of this song. She and I became close friends when we found out in our teens that we were both Joni fans. Every Joni concert we've gone to, we have gone together. From our teens to our forties, there have been many changes in our respective lives, kids, divorces, remarriages, some politics we agree to disagree on, and yes-- a car accident! We live an hour and a half away from each other however, every time we get together, the first words out our mouths are... I have to come and see you- Maybe once or twice a year- Secondly, from the Joni tribute, in Tony Bennett's blurb, he said something about how she considered different LP's to be different styles of art such as her "Jackson Pollack" phase. Being a visual artist, playing with many different styles and even blending some together, I can understand and accept Join's wide range of musical exploration. So call DED and WTRF her "commercial art phase". Also, Joni's mind was on Larry at the time. Seems to me she was so head over heals in love with him (enough to marry him), that she was on a major high, of course the music is going to reflect that emotion. That's just the way I've always looked at those two LP's. Thirdly, I think the most absurd song Joni ever wrote was Ray's Dad's Cadillac! What the hell is that! It doesn't fit with NRH at all! How about "Opps, I have room for one more song on this LP, what can I fill the empty space with??" My husband's comment to this song was: Ya know, Joni could write about dog shit, and began singing "dog shit in the yard" to the tune of "Ray's dad's cadillac". Anyhow, that's my two cents. Mitchell Reed Marksa wrote: > Can anyone tell me what Joni's relationship was with B. >Mitchell Reed? I'm curious if anyone knows how BMR was >part of Joni's life. Thanks. The best references I've found are in David Crosby's 1988 autobiography "Long Time Gone." I think it was reprinted in paperback a couple years ago. Crosby brought Joni out to L.A. to help her produce her first album "Song to a Seagull." They were also romantically involved at the time. Crosby introduced several of the L.A. music crowd to her and everyone was instantly blown away by her and her music. B. Mitchell Reed at that time (1967) was a dj on one of the most popular AM radio stations in L.A. - KFWB (now an all news and traffic report format). BMR was a friend of Crosby and as soon as he heard Joni he couldn't do enough to spread the word about her. He had a recording of the STAS album a few months before it was released and took it upon himself to play cuts off it on KFWB. The listeners became instantly enamored of her and by the time the album was officially out, it was one of the most sought after items in town. Also, prior to the release, Joni was booked to perform a few nights at the Troubadour in L.A. and all nights instantly sold out - all because of BMR's exposure of her via the radio station. You might say he was very instrumental in her early career. A few years ago I tried to obtain tapes of BMR radio programs from the era to try to get some with the early Joni content. I found a few but none of them had what I was looking for. I did find a 1967 BMR interview with Crosby that is priceless but it occurred just two weeks before he first met Joni in Florida. Kakki, remembering all those nights listening to BMR with the transistor radio up to her ear ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Aug 2000 17:59:06 EDT From: DreamZvil@aol.com Subject: Re: B. Food for thought! -Chris Excellent reply! Poor much maligned 'Ray's Dad's Cadillac'. How dare Joni write a fun, light-hearted, witty song? Bad Joni! Bad, bad Joni! You're supposed to suffer for us, girl! What's the matter with you? Go paint a picture if you want to do some 'feel-good' stuff! BTW: I want to officially nominate k. d. lang's 'Invincible Summer' as *the* feel-good record of the summer of 2000! I remember when I put NRH to tape, the whole record wouldn't fit on one side of a 90 minute tape, so the track I cut was "Nothing Can Be Done"...I always thought Ray's Dad Cadillac was a playful little thing, a nice offset to some of the heavier stuff on the record! I LOVE the NIght Ride home album..but Nothing Can Be Done is just not a favorite of mine..But, TO each his own.. I am so excited to hear that Bjork will be on this tribute album! I saw a special of her creating an album in Spain. She takes such pains with the way she wants her music to sound. I know she would take Joni's songs and give them the artistic interpretation they deserve. Any artist has to admire her individuality and her musicality. I am also excited about Janet Jackson being on this tribute album. I have always liked her. As was said, we already know what K.D. Lang sounds like. I am quite interested in hearing what each of the artists have to offer. I would also like to say welcome to the new JMDL members. We are truly like a family and if you love Joni, you will fit right in. Oh, Bob, I "LOVE" Santanna's "Corazon Esplinado"..Does this translate to splintered heart? Hello everyone, I am just curious about the meaning behind the song " the Boho Dance" I guess I am a bit naieve about the direction of the lyrics..eventhough i love to sing along to them.. i feel like i am blowing hot air ..without not knowing the meaning..behind the song.. In the album notes, Joni says that the song is a "Tom Wolfeism".. now i know that he wrote the Bonfire of the Vanities..and was a writer from the sixties on..but could anyone explain to me (the simple minded person).. how the meaning of the song ties in with Tom wolfe..and etc.. I would appreciate that very much..
