I thought it was closer to the LP in overall sonic approach, but I was so used to the HDCD that I didn't think that it was necessarily a good thing. It is nice to have both versions, one for when you are feeling somewhat laid back (gold), and one for when you are a bit more energetic (HDCD). I read here that someone heard that Joni liked the HDCD version, but it is definitely unique, and not the same as the LP. I forget how the rest of the sequence goes but many many years later, Ive only just acquired For the Roses (amazing!!!) and Hejira and some others. Not to mention revisiting Court and Spark and Blue. I am amazed at how i never tire of her...ever. I can and do listen to her over and over. (obsessed? me? never!) I am also moved by her lyrics, her music and her ability to paint. She speaks to me in so many ways, on so many levels. I am constantly amazed at the connection. Ive always felt less alone when listening to her. Always. And yea, she is so diverse!!! As I am sure you must know by now, this list is the best thing going. You will meet and grow to love these wonderful people as though they are family. I cannot imagine life without them. Eric, Nice to hear ya. I so agree that "few" rival her songwriting. I'd even go so far as to say - IMHO - that NONE rival her songwriting capabilities. Since no other artist does what she does with poetry & music - not the way she does it, not those melodies she makes with those emotions she writes. She has no running mate! No genre even. Bob Dylan is GREAT but other people make that kind of music. Joni? All alone. Some other artists who are the single representatives of their style would be Steely Dan, Jane Siberry, Laurie Anderson. Can you think of some others. The Roches. Peg> > > ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 07:33:46 -0400 From: David Gertler Subject: Joni collectors? When I discovered Joni, I bought albums she referred to as an influence to try and hear the similiarities and how it was an influence: Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way" and "Neferitti" (apparently big influence on guitar sound on "Hejira") Stravinski's "Rite of Spring" she has often referred to as influential. Also singers she thought were "great": Billie Holiday, Maria Callas, Michael McDonald. At one point she said "Edith Piaf was my greatest influence as a singer." Very interesting. Welcome again. I thought I'd reply... My first musical experience was the album "Nights in White Satin" by Moody Blues. It was on 8-track, and I played it over and over and over again. I was at a friend's house, and I remember refusing to leave with them -- I just stayed there motionless on his water bed while they went out to party for the night. I haven't been the same since, you know. I've always been very liberal about pot -- in my opinion, it is a much safer drug than alcohol, and I don't subscribe to the theory that it's a "gateway" drug leading to addiction. In order to find it, many young people need to contact dealers who make other, more dangerous drugs readily available. To me, the drug laws are more harmful to people than the drugs themselves. About the addictions, some drugs are worse than others. I just had a weird experience with a young man -- some of you may have met us at Joni's MSG show. He's a good drummer and a lad with a lot of potential, but he's always been seriously depressed and seemingly in need of a friend. So, I took him under my wing, helped him out financially, hooked him up musically, and put him up in my house. Turns out, he's a major partier, totally escaped from reality. He ended up screwing me over, ripping me off, playing games with my head, and running out without even a look back. You know, he's not the first person I've met like that, or who seriously hurt me. Some listers defended drugs and tried to rank the addictions. Really, though, addictions are anything that make you want to escape the reality of life -- the longings to fill the empty voids in your psychology. Anything, from food to sex to pot to religion to drink, can become an addiction if you use it as a substitute for healthy expression. When used properly, the substances can be healthy, of course, but it seems that in modern times, too many people choose substances over substance. People today are so attuned to quick fixes and instant pleasure, they don't realize how addictive their personalities have become, and how desperately they strive to prolong those addictions at the cost of their own spirituality. The Hopis recognized how much our lives are out of balance and warned us of the consequences. After my little drummer boy tripped off to a new haze in someone else's rent-free room, I did some Internet research on why I was so hurt by the experience. It turns out he was quite slick, knowing just where to hit my weak spots to get what he wanted. There were some serious psychological dynamics at play there. The waters of an artist's soul can be so easily rippled, and he knew just where to throw the pebbles. Trying to sort it all out, I found an excellent web page compiled by a Canadian writer who really seems to have it together, in my opinion. Originally, it was designed to provide information about food addictions, and it's very big on fasting. But some of the writer's insights in other areas are phenomenal -- why we continue to eat, drink, smoke, and do things to excess, knowing they are intrinsically bad for us, but compulsively unable to stop. Unlike AA and the other pseudo-religions of recovery, he simply puts it into a psychological perspective. It helped me a lot, especially when I could see myself in my little friend's serious drug problem and understand the parallels. The website is Christian in nature, but I didn't find it too preachy or condemning. To me, it combines the Hopi teachings of "life out of balance" and Christ's teaching perfectly. It may not be for everyone, but I really want to share it with as many people as I can, especially you wonderful folks on the JMDL. Go to http://www.godsbanquet.com The New Millenium section is astounding. To me, Joni has been a prophet of this same "out of balance" message for decades. She's been putting the message in song and gently pouring it in our ears. This guy packs the message in a hammer and hits you over the head with it. 'Tis wonderful to have my old friend of spirit on JMDL talking about Joni and Jesus and Hate-ler and How-odd Hughes and Martha and landscapes. Are you still getting your feet up to dance? Even though they're covered with ...... Enough of that. I was reading recently an old interview when she was talking about how she could play extraterrestrial diminished minor ninths augmented with a major foresight with one finger, due to her tunings, and how her contemporary R&R associates were ........ what? Incapable of replicating the textures she was painting. Something like that. And so the jazz fraternity phase began. Yes when she uses her Joni-tuned guitar, that chop chop that she sings along to (on the off beat so oft), it's tremendous. Didn't we try it once with "Conversation"? As for the newer interpretations, I know only a few; mainly off "Just Ice". I love it! Her reworking of Moon at the Window, IMHO, is tons better than that on WTRF. When she duffs on NRH though and immediatelly apologises to the audience mid song I did think on first hearing that she was pushing/punishing it a tad. The rendition is strained and now I think I see what you meant in the post. Did I follow you right? The reworked "Just Like This Train" on the same bootleg IM second HO is so fresh. I hope she chooses to revamp acoustically and doesn't become too BSN-ish. Let's face it - that's why we got into her in the first place. I'll never forget that semester after the Christmas break when I had been given FTR and you had the second songbook (with proper tunings) not having heard FTR. And since I'm going all the way to L.A. to see family, I might as well go up north to Shasta and Oregon and enjoy my Spiritual Homes up there! So I'm busy packing and moving! Even tho' I just moved in this house 2 months ago, "Life Is What Happens To You When You're Busy Making Other Plans", and I'm storing my stuff at an even BETTER place I'm planning to move into when I get back! I have one nephew who just turned 7 and a niece who's almost 4. I should be in L.A. for her 4th birthday, and my 44th birthday a few days later! Amazingly, it turns out that Princess Margaret was one of their greatest fans and used to join them in regular revelry at their cottage! After 25 years, the band are reforming and are playing a series of dates this summer, including Cropredy Festival. Ex-member Rose Simpson is now the lesbian mayoress of Aberystwyth. Now the Joni content. The magazine also publishes "The 100 greatest songs of all time" as voted by some well known songwriters like McCartney, Travis, Carole King etc. ACOY gets in at number 52 and Urge for Going is listed as one of Fran Healy's (of Travis) favourite songs. JT's Fire and Rain is 16 and No 1? - In My Life by Lennon and McCartney. There is also a list of the most played songs ever. "You've lost that lovin' feelin'" is top on 7 million but Both Sides Now does pretty well on 5 million. Not bad. He proceedes to introduce "a young female singer from New York named Janis Ian" and she sings a song (title escapes me) about how she brings a black man home from a date and he kisses her on the front door. She did the song with just a 12 string guitar and sang it all the way through. For 1958 this was a huge deal and was commented on in the newspaper the next day. (2) One Friday night on the Jack Parr show in 1963 or 64 he had just returned from England. The Parr show was unique in that he had very famous people including the President and he would get very informal wih them. He was a precurser to the tonight show. Steve Allen replaced him and Johnny carson replaced Steve Allen. Anyway he had this little thing where he would often go on a vacation and make a home movie and then show it on his show when he got back. This particular night he says that he had just seen the most amazing thing when he went to England and a friend of his told him that he just had to see this rock and roll band that had this mania going on about it and he then shows films from a Beatles performance at the Cavern Club. The girls are of course coming totally unglued and to be honest for ther time it looked like they were having convulsions. I remember laying on the floor and my parents sitting in the big chairs and I turned around and they had these shocked expressions on their faces like really stunned. They had no idea what to make of this and Parr said they would be coming to America the following year. That summer their song Please Please Me made the radio for a very short period of time then disappeared. One year later the Beatle wave really hit. At school all my friends particularly the girls couldnt stop talking about this Parr Show appearance. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Jul 2000 19:03:37 -0400 (EDT) From: zaide912@webtv.net Subject: vinyl The last time I was in NYC I bought Court and Spark for $1 in mint condition on vinyl at an east village record store. Has everyone seen this? I can't remember where it was shown - sometime in the last few years on cable - but it's really amazing. It's the appearance that Joni stayed in NYC for and skipped Woodstock. Still, once in a while another show comes along that makes a TV set worthwhile. Usually, of course, it gets canceled in its first season ... I don't have any posters yet -- I don't like the one for _Both Sides Now_, and I keep seeing the other ones on eBay get bid out of my reach. I have a handful of magazines, including a _Time_ from 1974 (with Joni on the cover) and a _Chatelaine_ from 1969 (with a VERY YOUNG Joni on the cover!). The second dumbest thing I did today was to let a piece of tape come in contact with the _Chatelaine_ cover; it peeled off a tiny bit of the picture. [The dumbest thing I did today was to stand up suddenly in our basement, when I was underneath a low-hanging ventilation pipe -- knocked me straight onto the floor, it did!] I have backstage passes from 1983 and from the taping of the recent TNT television special. I know what you mean about not having value if you weren't there, but somehow they got a hold on me anyway. I've tried to buy videotapes of some old performances, but again the bidding becomes "too rich for my blood." This hobby is starting to run into some semi-significant money, so I'm beginning to auction off some of my old chess books and magazines -- that means I must really be SERIOUS about collecting Joni! ;-) Looking forward to hearing of others who share our hobby ...
