Was expecting them to be available at the Mendel and was disappointed when they weren't. I want the French-kissing one, actually. Not officially BSN, is it? Anyway, next time there is a concert, I am going to commission someone out there to pick one up for me, okay? This should be labelled NJC, but if I do that it may not be seen by people who get the Joni-only posts, and I am not sure who that is, so please forgive me this once, you guys. I wanted to tell Rick and Mary that our second vcr is on the fritz so I haven't been able to copy my Come In From the Cold video for them yet, and to say that if there were NJC replies to any of my posts about feminism, I wouldn't have seen them, since I am an only-Joni'er -- so it's not that I am ignoring you. Bit of a dilemma there - can't finish what I started. OH well. I don't generally care to argue these points for long, once I find out where others stand and have said my piece. To each his own. I have fallen behind in replying to my email but at the back of my mind I seem to recall someone asking me how old Emil is -- he turned 12 on June 21. To everyone he saw for the first week after our trip to the Mendel, he said "Did you know I got to meet Joni Mitchell?" He was very pleased with himself and I was very grateful to Joni for taking the time for him. I do suspect she was bored to tears at his "conversation" -- after all, she was there for her paintings and he only mentioned them once -- but she was kind and patient with him, and I now have an extra soft spot for her because of that. I was first introduced to him when a best friend whom I'd shared much of my love for Joni with made me a 'check this out' tape in the spirit of sharing music you think the other would like. having forgotten the artists name, if he even told me, as soon as we parted, I listened, liked it, put it on a shelf, mixed it in with other music I listened to as I did my writing, listened some more and one day realized that this tape was the only thing that regularly made it to my stereo and that I was now in the mode of always coming back to it. (ok, well I *intended* this to be brief) it was about that time I decided I'd better get back to my pal and ask just who this was whose lyrics I'd already memorized from sheer repetition and it turned out it was his 'Black Sheep' album... now I know I shaed all this once before but since then one of our own listers generously shared a tape tree style live tape of him with me that was exquisite and told me I really ought to get his newer cd, 'The American', to which I responded that I wanted to but I didn't because I just... loved... For me it is almost impossible to name a definitive second to Joni as I first started listening to her music when I was 10 years old. She may have been second to the Monkees, Bobby Sherman, the Partridge Family, or they first to her. My taste in music was also influenced by growing up in Detroit, where the Supremes, Temps & Tops, Marvin, Smokey, Stevie, 'Retha, the Fifth Dimension (my first concert), and the Jackson 5 had huge airplay. As I grew through the decades my seconds changed. I went through my Beatles period, the White Album held reign on my turntable for many moons. The Who also had their turn, with Quadrophenia. Jethro Tull, Yes, and Zeppelin are grouped together as I loved them all equally. During the whole songwriter decade of the 70's James, Carole, S & G, Carly and Jackson were always around. How many copies of Tapestry have I owned in my lifetime? I admit that my high school years sometimes caved in to peer pressure where music was concerned. The hair bands like Boston, Journey, Foreigner, Van Halen flooded my cassette deck. I did turn most of my friends on to Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan, though. It was very hard to get my classmates to choose "Chair in the Sky" as our official Senior Song. Needless to say, we ended up with "Runnin' With the Devil". The 80's brought me joys like Joan Armatriading, Rickie Lee Jones, REM, Elvis Costello, Pat Metheny, Police/Sting, Prince, 10,000 Maniacs, Stevie Ray Vaughn. The 90's Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ben Folds Five, Dave Matthews Band, Lisa Loeb, Toad the Wet Sprocket, David Lahm. What remains, though, is my love of Joni's journey throughout her career. Since I first discovered her music I have been along for the ride of my life. She has never failed to expose me to new ideas and concepts in both lyric and music. What a lesson she has taught this eager pupil. If you only purchased one of his albums, it would be 'Isle of View' which can be found at www.rainrecords.com . . . . it is an unbelievable masterpiece which was far, far ahead of its time. Spheeris was killed by a drunk driver when he was returning home from completing that evening what would be his last album in 1983. His friends have fought hard to have his music released from Sony vaults (horror stories and all). That is why it is currently only available at rainrecords.com, but through their hard fought efforts will be available in record stores soon. Oh my god, guys, we have much too much in common! I bet you'd make as good a case for gay marriage as my spouse and I would too. But back to the point of this discussion - Joni's music is strong enough to listen to in any state of mind, but some albums in particular were peak experiences for me when stoned. I remember listening to Hejira in my college dorm room once stoned in the winter with snow outside, and let me tell you, I imagined skating on the ice with Joni (and I don't even skate)! I have probed the depths of "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire," "Chinese Cafe," "Dog Eat Dog," "Paprika Plains," "The Wolf in Lindsey," and many other compex compositions all with the weed enhancement. But best of all is being high at a Joni concert! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2000 01:31:34 -0400 From: "cassy" Subject: Marcel and DED Marcel said, bravely: >> Im going to listen to it for two weeks and then do a song by song review. For better or worse. The truth will set me free. Will I like it or will it fulfill all the critics jabs. Tune in next week for " Dog Eat Dog-Revenge of the 80's"......(Intro to Bethovens 5th) << Marcel... Try to put what the critics said out of your mind... consider what she's trying to say with this music, you know Joni's usually pretty succinct in her delivery of the "point." What I took away from the songs on DED was an editorial of the state of our society in the 80's. She was being critical of the way society and the media were being blasé in sensationalizing the real news and fabricating sensational news to feed the masses. Television was full of pompous, pretentiously pious preachers in pompadours; thinly veiled right-wingers. Cocaine was rampant ("Lie down, Teeth chatter, Heart pounds, I don't feel so good"). We were being fed sex to sell products more openly than ever and in the midst of the glamour-age and excess was this travesty "Ethiopia." At the time DED was released, much of the day's music, generally, had become "canned." Joni was utilizing the trend in electronic synthesizers and some programmed drums to punctuate her editorial. Listen to "Ethiopia," yes, it's an electric piano sound, but damn, it was somewhat reminiscent of the FTR piano chording, spare and stirring. The cigarette machine rhythms on Smokin' were innovative and interesting. The horns throughout are clear and cutting. The counterpoint of Rod Steiger spouting his rhetoric to her commentary on the state of evangelism was very poignant. It's apparent throughout DED that Larry Klein was hugely influential on this particular release, it's more commercial than a lot of her other music "Good Friends" got a ton of airplay while the balance of the music was, once again, largely ignored. The critics (since when have we been influenced by their opinions of her music?), felt she had gone overboard with her electronics. Many people thought the Fairlight was a sort of droning, boring sound and the sampled percussion and drums was a sell-out to technology but there's a lot going on inside those electronics. "The Three Great Stimulants" does use a programmed drum track, it sounds like a tick...tick... ticking driving us in the background and allows the "real" drums to take the foreground when they kick in. Not too many drummers could keep the relentless pace of that ticking through a 6+ minute track, so programmed drums do have their place! Joni's lyrics have always spoken to me, when DED came out I thought I was a disco queen, dressed in my leotard and danskin wrap-around skirt, dancing, cocaine-snorting, out every night partying; DED touched me in a way that made me re-evaluate my priorities, she talked of superficiality and important issues of the day that were being ignored by folks like me. It opened my eyes back up to the real world, the one in the light of day, not the lights of the spinning mirror-ball. At different times in my life Joni's music has grounded me, DED grounded me at a time when I was out of control and in need of reeling in. One more gift to be grateful for. So Marcel, I sigh as I think of you listening to DED, no two people get the same thing out of a piece of music and it's not the 80's any more so the societal climate is totally different as your ears take in the songs. I really hope you don't hate it!
