Hi Gang- I have missed you, tangled up with the CBA (Christian Booksellers Association) convention in town. I was production manager and stage manager for a Christian music showcase and video production here in town. All the best Christian artists were participating; Jars of Clay, Sonic Flood, Kim Hill, Natalie Grant, Sonic Flood, Twila Paris, Wes King, + many more. The video priduction was of a program called "He Chose the Nails". It was really quite beautiful. I also got Freda a gig as the one of the Art Directors on the video shoot. I am SO exhausted! But of course not to exhausted to catch up on the latest digests and threads. 1. For The Roses 2. Hejira 3. Wild Things Run Fast 4. Hissing of Summer Lawns 5. To clarify, the even a remaster would still be AAD if that's what it was before. The first letter is how it was recorded, analog or digital. That can never change. The second is how it was mixed. Unless it is remixed, which none of her albums ever have been, that won't change either. The last letter is how it was mastered. Now that I think of it, maybe STAS was remixed when they remastered it. I have already posted the story of how I first heard Furry and Hejira while I was studying in Germany in the 70's. So years pass, and it's 1984. My best friend was returning to the states that summer from two years of travelling through Europe, South America and Africa. I had been stuck in New York due to poverty and could not travel with him. He had decided that it would be fun to invite everyone he'd met along the road and his old friends from New York to visit him that summer at his parents' farm in Lexington, Tennessee. There was room for unlimited guests and it would be a great way to get people together. It was an open invitation, so I said I would definitely come, but gave no specific arrival date. I wanted to surprise him. I decided to take the train (Amtrak was really cheap back then) from New York to Memphis via Chicago, and then a bus from Memphis to Jackson, Tennessee, and then hitch to the farm in Lexington - a real adventure! I loved taking the train back then, the liesurely pace, the people you'd meet in the dining car and the lounge, the world going by outside. During my Chicago stopover there was time to take a walk to the art museum and see that big "Sunday in the Park With George" painting. Then it was south on the train to New Orleans. The arrival in Memphis was scheduled for about five a.m. so I was afraid to sleep as everyone else was doing, fearing I'd miss my stop. I went to the observation car and tried to stay awake , but finally fell asleep, only to be jolted awake as the train pulled out of Memphis! I ran down to the conductor with my back pack and told him I'd missed my stop and he radioed the engineer to stop the train. We were still in the train yards of Memphis, it was dawn, and there weren't any other trains in sight. He repeatedly asked me "Do you want me to let you off the train here?" and "I am letting you off the train at your request", stuff like that, I guess to cover himself and the railroad legally. The train stopped, he opened the stairs and pointed where I should walk, emphasizing that I should walk there directly and quickly. I was so grateful and happy he'd bent the rules, I was really elated. Then the amazing thing happened. I crossed the tracks, and the street beyond them and when I looked up at the street sign I was on Beale Street. "Beale Street?" I thought, "isn't that the street in Furry Sings The Blues?" And the song came to life. It was dawn and the street was completely deserted. There was the "New Daisy" a movie theater. Other descriptions in the song popped into view. A pawn shop. There was the parking mall. And the statue of W.C. Handy. I had loved that song for almost a decade, but hadn't paid much attention to the specific details because they were about a place I knew nothing about. I think if I'd been asked where Beale Street was I might not have even registered Memphis. But by this chance adventure I had been brought to it. I walked along the street in awe, hearing the song in my head, feeling the past as Joni had, and only because she'd written a song about it. I couldn't believe I'd stumbled upon "Beale Street...faded out with ragtime blues..." Cool, huh? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 22:22:34 -0700 From: "Kakki" Subject: Re: Interesting Buckingham/Nicks Joni connection > Well...I was guessing I am one of those 'connections' but >sadly to say neither my Stevie friends nor I have been able to >find ANYTHING live from the Buckingham/Nicks era. Nikki and other Nickettes - I have an old friend, Augustine, from college in Arizona in the early 70s who might have some live B/N stuff. Correct if I'm wrong, but I recall that Stevie lived in Phoenix back then and I think they played some small gigs there initially. My friend would have put all us music sluts here totally to shame. I remember going to his house the first time and he had converted the entire living room plus a spare bedroom into something that looked like a music store, with the standard record racks and all. He also was the person who relentlessly badgered me to get that original BN vinyl. It was almost impossible to find, even in the late 70s, and so he eventually hand-delivered a copy to me after I'd moved back to California. I'm glad to have it and It's become quite the collectors item now ;-) I'm still occasionally in touch with him and will make an effort to see what he might have. I warned you at the time that I was fuzzy on the details. But thanks so for much for posting the original story. It was great to read again. Also thanks to everyone who's respond so warmly, and to those who have shared their stories with the rest of us. I for one find them exciting to read. There's an intimacy to them that I find very disarming. I laughed all afternoon thinking about the parents beating on the door to the groove of Dreamland, and I got chills thinking about a video tape of someone's parents with a soundtrack from the heart, and I pondered the possibilities while reading about songs that can effect the elements. I've also wondered about that wide swing over the years. As I came to learn more biographical details about all of them I speculated that (bracing myself to get beaten up here) James, having also come from a very wealthy and prominent east coast family, ultimately related better to Carly on some level. Thanks for verifying the Phoenix connection, Nikki! I've just always wondered in retrospect how my friend knew so much about them and was so taken with them before they ever joined FM and figured he must have known them from Phoenix.
