At 06:48 AM 10/7/99 Angela wrote about "Mingus:" >I must say I have never heard a song as eerie as the >Wolves song...Joni is amazing the way she paints a picture with her words >and playing..I had chills running down my spin as I listened to it and I've >never felt so uncomfortable (if that makes sense) listening to a song, that >howling was just scary... "Mingus" is one of my favorite Joni albums. I was a budding jazz musician at the time of its release and while I had been very attracted to Joni's music earlier I felt like she really "broke through" into the jazz world with this one and it offered just one more bit of synchronicity for me. Anyway, this is a LONG re-post, but a Joni-story/quote that I love. It's from an interview Joni gave to "Musician" in 1983 and takes a while but will eventually work back to "The Wolf That Lives in Lindsey," which remains at the top of my consciousness these days after listening to Marian's amazing presentation. Following is the text, taken from in the articles section. "There's a song called "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey." It was a live duet between Don Alias and myself; it's a strange piece of music, in that it's an example of a song that has a structure that I had completely ignored. I dropped beats, I added beats, there's bars of 3/4 that are in there, and there's all kinds of abbreviated signatures. Don was thrown into a highly alert position as a drummer, to be able to follow this thing, which was not maintaining a groove, just bursts of rhythmic passages. It was very spontaneous. And, when the thing was over, we figured that magic had, in fact, occurred. As raw as it was, and as technically peculiar as it was, you couldn't beat it for spirit. And I turned to Henry and said, "You know what we need on this now? We need wolves and water gongs." And, that was on a Wednesday night. So he was going to make it a project over the weekend to look through the A&M library of sound effects, and we were going to get some wolves." "So, anyway, that weekend I had company coming from Texas, and I had company coming from Canada at the same time. And simultaneously I was supposed to be at the Bread & Roses Festival. When my guests arrived, coming already from long distances, I had to tell them, "We're moving now!" And we all went to this festival in San Francisco. Things kinda got screwed up and there were some vibes around the whole situation which I won't go into, that made me very introspective. And I noticed at dinner that night, that my introspection was also making the table introspective. So, I thought, "I don't want to be here in this mood with these people, I'm influencing their mood," and so I excused myself. I had told a friend of mine, Tim Hardin, that I was gonna meet him back at the hotel. So I get to the hotel desk, and I say to a very uptight desk clerk, you know, "Would you please give me Mr. Hardin's room?" And he replied, "Can't you see I'm busy?" He was really uptight. The lobby of the hotel was gigantic, and suddenly, across the hall there came a drunk, singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?," stumbling across the lobby, snapping his fingers, right? I had nothing but time on my hands, so I perked up, because suddenly there was externally something interesting (laughs), and I was drawn across the hall, and I linked up with him, and we came back across the hall, singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" We ended up standing by the desk, with this uptight guy in the background, and the next thing I knew, we had drawn in two more singers who turned out to be the Persuasions. Well, when we stopped singing, everybody was in great spirits, we all laughed, you know, we patted each other on the back, and we shook hands. "So now," I say to the guy, "Would you give me Mr. Hardin's room," and somebody in the crowd yells, "Oh, Hardin's in the bar." So I go into the bar, there's a kind of loungey jazz band playing, and Hardin is pissed out of his mind, and he comes dancing towards me through this crowded room here, singing to the band, "Hello, Joni," and doing improvisational lyrics. So I start dancing towards him, singing "Hello, Timmy! So good to see you!" The bartender says, "What would you like?" And I sing to him, "One white wine," and the bartender raises his hand in the air, and sings back, "One white wine." And the next thing, the whole room was engaged in this spontaneous Broadway show. Anyway, the story hasn't come to an end yet. Now, we're all in very high spirits. We discover that there's a party on the third floor. We go up to this room, and all the way up the hallway—you know, Timmy and I are hamming it up, just being goofy. We get into the room, and suddenly, the same guy that was drunk in the lobby singing "Why Do Fools Fall In Love?" comes up to me and says, "I have a tape of some wolves." And I say to him, not even realizing how profound it is, "Oh, I'm looking for a tape of some wolves. I'll write down my address and you send it to me." He said, "No, I mean, I've got it on me." So I said, "Okay," and he produced this box of tapes, all homemade with labels on them, and we thumbed through it. It was all African animal sound effects. Well, the very last entry was wolves. So he loaned me his tape recorder, I put the tape on, and it was a cycle of a wolf—-it starts off with the lead wolf, and then you hear yipping of pups and female voices, you know? And then he goes, "Aaaooo-aaooh-abh." Like, the same yelp, but one note up higher in the scale. And then the yipping of the pups, and the females. And the thing was looped about four times. Well, the first time I did "The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey," I just hit the button right at the beginning, picked up the guitar, and uncannily, it was the perfect key. The way the loop was designed, if you started it at the top of the tape and went all the way to the end, it fit the structure perfectly. So anyway, the next night when I went to the concert, my friend Joel Bernstein hooked the tape up and for an encore, I came out and we did this song and we blasted the wolves, mixed them in with the song, and the audience when I was finished singing, some clapped, but most of them howled me back on for another encore. So you see, there's still ways to get spontaneity into a show." I try to imagine Joni feeling a bit apprehensive about all the turmoil that's going on around her and right in the middle of all this she discovers, out of nowhere, this tape of howling wolves that just happens to be in the right key and also just happens to sequence perfectly with her song. Isn't it interesting how the creative process works sometimes? :-) Scott ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 2000 11:45:08 -0600 From: John Downes Subject: Synchronicity/Inspiration from Joni Hi everyone, I am enjoying the synchronicity stories. The crow story even brought tears to my eyes! Made me think of my own to share, although this is more one of mystical inspiration. I am an accredited music therapist here in Canada. One of the client populations I work with are the mentally and physically challenged. That's just a bit of background information, now on to the story.... As a Christmas present for my three elder sisters I wanted to give them a copy of a video which documented a visit my parents made to England in 1979 before they died in the 1980's.. My cousin in England sent over the tape for me to copy, but when I saw the tape, I realized that it was a video which had been made from a film. The film had no sound, and it was somewhat creepy seeing my parents moving around silently on the television screen. So I decided that I would composed some music or a song to have playing in the background of the film/video. For weeks and weeks I thought about doing the composing work, but nothing really came to me. No words, no melody, nothing. Then one day I was doing a music therapy session with a young woman who is blind and mentally handicapped. By touch, I asked her to choose a recording to listen to, either a male singer, or a female (Joni Mitchell's Wild Things Run Fast). She chose the Joni CD by touching it and I started the stereo and shared the song "Chinese Cafe" with her. As the music played and Joni sang "nothing lasts for long", suddenly the lyrics I needed for my composition jumped into my head. I grabbed a pen, and as Joni continued to sing, I wrote down a page of lyrics. As I reached the end of my writing and Joni's song was finished, I had tears in my eyes, a lump in my throat, and a certain knowledge that I had just written a song from my heart which would be perfect for the video. I couldn't continue with the writing of the music since I had to pull myself together and complete my session with the young woman I was working with. But I thanked her for making that particular choice, since if she had made the male singer choice I am sure the above would not have taken place. Later in the week I sat down at the piano, and the music basically wrote itself. Does it sound anything like Chinese Cafe in musical style or lyrics? No, and that is the strange thing. Somehow Joni's song was the catalyst I needed to create something totally new. The song was overdubbed onto the video, and on Christmas morning when my sisters saw the tape, there were tears of joy all around. After fifteen years of absence for my mother, and eleven for my dad, we still miss them terribly. However, the video is a great remembrance, and the song a comfort. Its fun & enlightening to look up the significance of animals when they appear in your life. Crows & ravens are about magic. You asked if "anyone else out there has had a similar kind of mystical coincidence in their lives". I have had many, though not fquite so profound as yours. One I recall occured when I was playing a song of mine at a party for some friends that had a chant like part with the words "rain come down". This was in the middle of the dry season here in CA when it never rains. All of a sudden in the middle of my song it started raining. It was a little scary! When I told that story and a friend of mine, she said that she had recently been singing a song she wrote about the wind. This was in a coffee house that had a huge statue outside. In the middle of her song, a big gust of wind came up and knocked over the statue! This had never happened before. On a somewhat subtler note, I have been working on a song about Joni & last night got up in the middle of the night to write down some verses. One of the words was mystic (in describing her) but I was questioning myself as to the accuracy of this and wondering if maybe I wasn't talking more about me. Well then, it was quite amazing to me to just read your post about her interest in mysticism. Guess I got my answer.... Lyrics: "She bounces off the boulders, she runs on the rocks She's taking the time from her grandfather clocks... Mama Lion, mama lion, I'm starting to sink between the sunshine and the icicles and the things that you think" My interpretation for years was think of the inside photo of FTR with Joni nude on the rocks, the fact that in Joni and Graham's house there were grandfather clocks, and the icicles in the song "Little Green" And everyone seems to have forgotten the singer/songwriter Eric Andersen, who started in the same folk coffeehouses as Dylan and Baez, recorded with Rick Danko of the Band for years before Rick died, and has stayed a lifelong friend of Joni's. His song, "Blue River," not only features beautiful duet singing with Joni, but the references to "Blue" and "River" are clear. Then, on his 1991 CD, "Stages: The Lost Album," he writes in the intro to the song "It's Been A Long Time" - Through my friendship with Joni Mitchell, that song came about. You just miss your friends and it would be great to see each other again. By the way, I also own an old album by David Blue (he and Eric were in a band together in the early 60's) called "Com'n Back for More" (I assume long out of print) on which Joni sings duet with him on a song "Lover, Lover, Lover" So now, speaking of the old folkie days, here is my list of 5 cover songs: 1) Urge for Going (Tom Rush first recorded it on his album "The Circle Game") 2) Tin Angel (also from the same Tom Rush album - great to hear from a man's perspective) 3) Michael from Mountains (from Judy Collins' album Wildflowers - the woodwinds accompanying her voice make this version soar) 4) The Circle Game (by Buffy Ste.Marie, a fellow songwriter from Saskatchewan - - her version is at the speed we would all want a carousel to go - fast!) 5) Eastern Rain (by the Fairport Convention - members included Ian Matthews, Richard Thompson, and the late great Sandy Denny. Nobody else, not even Joni herself has ever recorded this beautiful song) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 01:17:19 +0100 From: "Jamie Zubairi" Subject: Re: "Russian on Prozac?" Mingus himself did not play on this, but it's probably as close to what his conception of these tunes would have been. The band consisted of John Handy, alto saxophone; Joe Farrell, tenor saxophone; Jimmy Owens, trumpet & flugelhorn; Jimmy Knepper, trombone; Don Pullen, piano; Charlie Haden, bass; Dannie Richmond, drums - quite a group of musicians! We have searched and searched....and searched...even the people who have the rarest stuff can't find anything. It's really funny, because we've been talking the past couple days about synchronicity moments. And tonight I had one that prompted me to get off the fence and announce this CD-Tree. The idea was to try and capture little snippets I've collected, odds and ends as opposed to full length concerts, like the "Unplugged & Jamming" discs. Anyway, I've been working with Steve P on the project, and he encouraged me to try and group like with like as opposed to just having a random mish-mash of things. I decided on calling the Series "Flotsam & Jetsam" just because I like the sound of that phrase. So, with that in mind, here we go: The first CD in the series is called "80's Degrees" because it's all 80's material. (Don Rowe, this one's for YOU, bud!) It starts out with a really rare 1983 rehearsal session with her band from her world tour. They're in a Hollywood studio and play "Heard It Through the Grapevine" (Penny, this a SUPERB version, no audience, just the studio recording!), Don't Interrupt the Sorrow, Solid Love (with that keyboard reggae thing goin' on), and two Joni-only electric guitar takes of BYT! Let me tell you the first time I heard this session I was wishing I had a Depends undergarment on! Next up is a rare remix of "Shiny Toys". I kept noticing how many folks put this one on their "Fave Song" list. This is a different version than what you're used to, very playful and fun, I don't have a lot of details on it but it's not the Shiny Toys you're used to...even has lots of "Whoo-Hoo's" in it! Whatever makes you Yahoo - and THIS will!! Next on the Menu is Joni's contribution to Farm Aid V in 1985. She does Three Great Stimulants & Dog Eat Dog to a crowd that's...well, they're not as into it as she would like them to be. But our Joni sounds great, as always! Still going strong, we dive into the Amnesty International Concert from 1986. We hear Stimulants again, asks the audience to "quit pitchin' shit up here", then members of Sting's and Peter Gabriel's band join her for a funky "Number One". Very Cool!!! And then she segues into Hejira which is always a treat! Sound like too much for one CD? Wait. there's more! We finish off with an Australian TV performance from 1988 featuring Night ride Home, a nice Interview, and Number One again, this time a more laid back version on acoustic. This is a pretty good collection, if I do say so myself! The Second CD in the Tree is "Flotsam & Jetsam Volume 2: 2000 Interviews" No there's not 2000 Interviews on the disc, these are all interviews that took place this year. First is her controversial talk with CBC radio in February. She gets pretty defensive with her feathers ruffled, and you can tell why with some of the silly questions thrown her way! Still, she throws in enough of those Joni-laughs to keep it upbeat. Thanks to Ranger Rick for this piece of Flotsam...or is it Jetsam? Next is Joni's appearance on Rosie O'Donnell in April. Nice interview, but best of all are of course her renditions of BSN and Answer Me, My Love. Rounding out this Interview Disc is the Promo CD for BSN called "Words + Music", with no original live renditions but samples from the record interspersed with snippets of dialogue about the making of the record. A nice companion piece to BSN... So there you go...the first two Volumes of Flotsam & Jetsam are birthed into the JMDL. So now comes the work...getting it out there where these gems can be enjoyed by whoever wants to hear them. After all, what good are they sitting on my shelf where I can't share the joy? :-) Here's the bonus...Steve P, a dangerously talented graphic wizard, has designed some most excellent labels, covers, tray liners, to go with the CD's. I'm not sure how best to work this part out but I'll figure out something! Anyway, if you're interested in adding these discs to your Joni collection, send TWO MUSIC/AUDIO CD's (please make sure they are Audio CD's) and an SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) to: Bob Muller 309 West Prentiss Ave. Greenville, SC 29605 Of course, if you have Joni to trade, that would be preferable! If you need to make other arrangements, e-mail me privately. Euro-JMDLer's, Mr. John Van Tiel the Great (with emphasis on the GREAT) will step up and help out. Muchos Gracias, Juan! (That's Dutch, innit?) I didn't even get around to talking about the synchronicity element. I was eating supper, watching the end of a Joni Interview on a Canadian show called Speakeasy, and she used the phrase "Flotsam & Jetsam" talking about the making of the video for Lakota. So I figured if she could mention F&J, so could I! :-) Bob NP: Joni, "Three Great Stimulants" from Amnesty Show '86 PS: I'm going on vacation Saturday, so don't trip over yourself to rush me your stuff. Don' go back to lurk mode, Jack! This stuff is great! I love this kind of reminiscence with critical commentary thrown in. I first head Paprika Plains on the radio too. I was at my friend Melanie's apartment back when we were in college and the University radio station dj (who we both knew - Tom Wilmeth - had this incredibly resonant, deep voice) played it one night. I too remember that it was the dead of winter when that record came out. There was snow everywhere during one of the coldest, snowiest winters I ever lived through (my last winter in Iowa as it turned out.) I was dirt poor too but I managed to scrape together the cash to buy DJRD. I didn't know what to think of it at first. I remember Dreamland was the first song to catch my ear and I nearly drove my roomie crazy. When I wasn't playing the record I was singing it to myself all the time...'Dreamland comin' on, Dreamland, Dree-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-eem-land....' Ah, memories.....sigh... What Karen Black > is to Carly Simon, Susan Sarandon is to JM. > -jan Careful what you say about Carly, Jan! There are those of us here who love & revere her. Actually I was thinking about the whole Joni/James/Carly connection recently. Except for the fact that they're both singer/songwriter/musicians, James couldn't have chosen 2 more different women, imo. Joni came from humble beginnings, born in a small town on the Canadian prairie. She had to scramble & pinch pennies in her early years as a singer. Eventually she evolved into a unique, uncategorizable & uncompromising musician & visual artist. She's remained true to her Canadian roots but in many ways became an icon of the 70's LA music scene and still lives in LA most of the time. A west coast kinda gal. Carly, on the other hand, was born the daughter of one of the founders of Simon & Schuster. This woman didn't have to work a day in her life if she didn't want to. To me her writing is very reflective of an East Coast sensibility (as if I really know what that is.) Although born to wealth and privilege, however, there is nothing shallow or pretentious in her songs. She is an accomplished musician and songwriter & sings beautifully. But I have to say that Carly's output has remained firmly rooted in pop music whereas Joni has practically invented her own genre. Again, I will say that The Bedroom Tapes is a fine record. From Joni to Carly. What a swing that must have been for Sweet Baby James! I have to admit, I find these 2 relationships quite fascinating and thinking about them in relation to each other really makes me curious about them.
