Everyone here I've heard from seems so sweet and welcoming and it makes me feel wonderful. As for everyone who i haven't met yet, I look forward to talking to you in the not so distant future. By the way, I just got For the Roses on cd. For years I've listened to the LP version my mom has had since the 70's but now that we don't have a record player anymore, i haven't been able to listen to it. I'd forgotten how much i love that album. Its so great. Well anyways thats besides the point. Also, just outta curiousity: whats everyones favorite album? i think mine is either clouds or court and spark. i'm leaning more towards court and park. As much as i love the pure folk-ness of clouds, i jsut can't help but fall in love with the jazzy flavors and style of court and spark. LOL random random random post. Other celebs in the audience for sure, tho I'm not one to spot them :-) When Winonna took the stage, she said "Joni, I've loved you since I was 10 years old, I can't believe I'm doing this." Anyways, It's hard for me to find ANYONE my age or even any age in my area that appreciates Joni as much as I do(besides my parents, but they were hippies so...). My boyfriend hates her musick(though he respects her as a artist and a musician, he just really dislikes her style). So its a little dissapointing that I don't really have any friends that I can randomly chat about Joni with, without having to explain who she is. Tell me, did Joni write River about James Taylor? When James Taylor took the stage at the TNT tribute to perform "River," he loooked at Joni and said something like "there she is, the bone, on the throne, where she belone....thanks for writing this" Was he just appreciative that Joni wrote a great piece of music, or touched that it was written about him? I NOW know that FTR is about JT (always thought it was about JM), always knew that Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire was about JT, but figured that cause "River" is on Blue, that it might be about someone else (David Blue?) Also, any comment on this recent thread. I was long under the impression that Lead Balloon was about David Geffen. There were many threads after the release of TTT, and my recollection was that the consensus was that Geffen was the object of Lead Ballon. Apparently Joni did NOT find this funny and for years Rolling Stone had an "Unofficial" policy of not liking Joni (or at least this is what I've read). Jan lives on my street in NYC and I sing this song every time I walk by his house--just a nice little Joni moment of revenge for me! :-) Stephen Marilyn replied: Thanks for clearing that up. One of the songs that its hard to think of any other song I have ever heard like it. 2) Cactus Tree: probably because the song takes me back to the first timne I ever heard Joni but such a simple production and yet it makes my heart bleed. 3) Songs to Ageing Children Come: Over the top harmonies. Incredible poetry. Another song that is such an original melodic line it has always amazed my ear. 4) Turbulent Indigo: The counter rhythm. The interplay of the instruments. The fabulous drum track and the way it wheezes to an end unlike anyother song I have ever heard even when they try to make it wheeze to an end. 5) All I Want: I think at some point we are all on a lonely road and traveling whether in a car or just in life. The dulcimer (which I miss so much in her songs) just tickles my psyche. Second String: 6) Amelia: Not a song as much as it is an experience. 7) Chinese Cafe: The rich, lush, LA production. this song could not possible have been produced in New York. It would have sounded different. A real experience to listen to. 8) Marci: This song could not possibly have been produced in LA. This is the feeling of walking on the harbor in NYC. Looking out to the other side of the Hudson. To jersey. To the Brooklyn shipyards. this is an incredible New York experience. I have always felt that Marci was Joni and will continue to do so until Joni corrects me. 9) Slouching Towards Bethlehem: Again the production , the rhythm and the flow. Take me away Joni. 10) Cold Blue Steel: If i was trap[ped in an elevator with Joni this is the first thjing i would ask her about. Who they are and how she came to write this song. Graphic scenes. dark mystery. Incredible melody and texture. Runners up. Third String: 11) Night Ride Home 12) Passion Play 13) For the Roses 14) Just want To See You Again 15) Dont know where I stand Fourth String 16) Furry Sings the Blues (live version) 17) Off night backstreet 18) Shiny Toys 19) Sire of Sorrow 20) I think I understand 21) (just for the heck of it) Robbie Robertsons lead guitar dancing on the choruses never ceases to thrill me .... The first is by Anthony Fawcett: "Paprika Plains," an unwinding slice of autobiography and dream sequences which takes up a whole side of the double album Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, is an unusually complicated and ambitious example of this building process: "Oh! A lot of shuffling went on," Joni confirms. "There were Indian grass chants in the middle of it, there were a hundred and one different ways that I approached that. More so than anything else on the album. The instrumental passage in the middle just poured out. It was the most experimental and bewildering piece, but it was always moving forward, always changing, much in the same way that Picasso paints—all of a sudden he would have the painting beautifully balanced and he would decide to block out something over here, so he would change it, and now his balance is thrown out; this area is beautiful but it has to go in order to balance it. When he finishes it there would be onlookers who would say, 'I liked it better the way it was before.' But he's always working towards his own satisfaction, that's his only criteria. Following is an excerpt from an interview that appeared in Musician magazine: Musician: What made him (Mingus) think you were nervy? Joni Mitchell: Two things: he thought I had a lot of nerve to be dressed up like a black dude on the cover of Don Juan's Reckless Daughter. He couldn't get over that. He was sort of thrilled by it. The other thing was the piece "Paprika Plains," which made him mad at one level, and kind of interested him on another. What happened was I hadn't played piano for a few years, and in January, just before making that album, I called up my producer and said, "Henry, we've got to go in the studio right now because for some inexplicable reason I'm playing piano better than I have any right to be. I can't hit a wrong note." What I'd done was give myself a freeing lesson and said to myself, "Everything resolves to C; no matter where you go you can't hit a wrong note, just go home to C." We went in the studio and cut this thing four times. It was a trance-like situation. The four improvisations we recorded all clocked in at between twenty-nine and thirty-one minutes, so my attention span each time was almost exactly the same. From those four performances I edited together a piece that was to become the bridge for "Paprika Plains" and months later I wrote a song in which I inserted this segment. In the meantime the piano had been retuned a number of times. Then I gave the piano piece with lyrics to an arranger who added strings. The strings begin in the January section of the piano piece, but when they hit the October part, the piano tuning has changed, so the strings have no chance to retune as they cross over. That really infuriated Charles. "The orchestra's out of tune... they're in tune, they're out of tune!" Well, that drove him crazy (laughs). So he thought I was a nervy broad. Both are courtesy of this very JMDL site - from the Articles archives. One of my favorite tunes on that record. Joni's blossoming jazz sensibilities are evident, she really seems secure and relaxed w/ her phrasing, and Jaco and Wayne's interplay is just extraordinary. What a cool tune........!!! I wore the cassette out back in 1980, listened to it endlessly when I was on the road, and although some of my musical colleagues didn't think much of it at the time, today most everyone agrees that it's a milestone recording. It's provocative to think of the potential liaisons that might have been, but "Mingus" included Herbie Hancock, Peter Erskine, Wayne, Jaco, and Joni, which I don't think happened again. Hey Bob, Done with the TNT Tribute, I decided to continue my Joni video jourey with Video Tree 1. I was just watching a VH1-on-1 segment from 1991 where Joni calls Larry "a city boy from East LA" -- so the Russian "geneology" is probably the extent of it. And possibly from being surrounded by grandparents or parents he can speak some - or fluent - Russian - or just put on a great Russian accent... Paul wrote the following about Paprika Plains... << and nothing, nothing in music has ever compared to the change at the end when the piano, bass and drums explode into the final improvisation. >> Okay, now you've got me going again. When I last left off, it was the middle of summer, 1977, if memory serves me well (which it often doesn't!). I was last seen, following a large black bird down the highway, and headed for Chicago. Now skip ahead several months, to the heart of winter. I had found a job, but not before being unemployeed for about 3 months, so money was extremely tight - no room for luxuries of any kind. Anyway, it was the coldest day of the year - I want to say about 15 or 20 below (why do always remember the weather when it comes to momentous Joni effents?). I was sharing a townhouse at the time with a friend of about 5 years named Billy (another huge Joni fan, who unfortunately passed away several years ago to AIDS). At the time, Billy had a Keeshond (a rather furry type of dog), named Kilo. We always tied Kilo up outside in order to do his business, but this time, one of us left him outside before we went to work. The poor thing was outside in this subzero weather for over 8 hours. While the dog was okay, Billy was wild, blaming me for leaving him out (I'm not sure who actually did it - I might remember the weather, but details like that slip my mind!) So, we were screaming at each other, and call each other names, as only best friends can, when one of us decided to put on the radio. Out from the speakers comes this incredible sound that stopped us both in our tracks - no more yelling, no more name calling, just blank stares and a great deal of excitement. It lasted for less than a minute or two, but it was wonderful! What was this? It had a familiar feel to it, but it was totally new. Finally, the disc jockey (at good old WXRT in Chicago - back when they weren't too 'hip' to play Joni) came on to say that we had just listened to side 2 of the new Joni Mitchell album, and after a short intermission, they would be playing the remaining 2 sides! Oh my God - we were like two little kids with their first bike! We scrambled around searching for a blank tape so we could get the last two sides on tape. Thank God Kilo was okay, because the poor thing probably would have died from neglect - we were that caught up in the moment. As it turned out, we had turned the radio on just at the point that Paul was talking about - when those drums and piano and bass (and horn?) all kick in for that final rush to the finish line. We managed to record the second two sides, and spent the rest of the night rewinding and replaying them. It was a magical night, and one of intrigue, because we still missed all of side one, and most of side two. What other goodies were in store for us on those two sides? What could lead up to that incredible finish? As great as it was to have sides 3 and 4, and missing sides 1 and 2 were driving us crazy. If I remember correctly, the album hit the stores the next day, but as I stated, I was dead broke. I then remembered that this small record store near by would take old albums as trade-ins, so I poured through my record collection looking for sacrificial lambs, and after arming myself with 15 or 20 of them, I headed to the record store. If I recall, the album sold for 11.99, and the store manager would only give me $1 per trade in, so I had to surrender 14 of them (damn taxes!), but it was a great and noble sacrifice, and one I committed happily. Besides, most of the stuff I brought with me was junk! We rushed home, and played the album from start to finish. And while Paul talks about the finish to Paprika Plains, what about the Overture that opens side one. Play that one as loud as you can, and tell me you don't get goose bumps - that last resounding bass note, right before Cotton Avenue kicks in, is a killer! Ah, Jaco. Oh, Joni. Aw, shit... I've been rambling again. Now you know why I stay in lurk mode most of the time. Sorry if my long winded musings annoy anyone. Corpis" Subject: TNT Tribute concert I finally had the chance to watch all of the tribute concert last week, and in general I loved it, esp. the performances by kd land (whose new album is a fun, frolicking love affair with summer), Cyndi Lauper, and "Amelia" by Shawn Colvin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. I am a big fan of Cassandra Wilson, and though DCfD was well-done, it didn't capture me the way that the wierdness of her cover of Black Crow did. Oh well. I'm also wondering why Sweet Honey in the Rock performed Circle Game. I saw Toshi Regon a couple of weeks ago (her mother is in Sweet Honey), and she mentioned that her mom's group just did a children's album. Is Circle Game on that album? Maybe because I just bought Chalk Mark on CD, I thought Sweet Honey would have done a really terrific job on Number One or The Beat of Black Wings or The Tea Leaf Prophecy. The rhythms and background vocals on those songs would have been great to hear with the layered vocals that Sweet Honey used to sing with Circle Game. Joni tells a very different version of this story in the article "Joni Mitchell is a Nervy Broad" written by: Vic Garbarini, in the magazine Musician, January 1983, available in the jmdl.com article database (amen and hallelujiah for that article database!). Check it out, it's a wild one. Great story about the Black Crow! I think the closest I have to a "Mystical Joni" experience comes indirectly through Judy Collins. As a three year old, I was obsessed with Judy, apparently, listening to the album "JUDITH" with headphones on, reading the lyrics on the LP jacket, though barely able to read and hardly able to understand what was being sung (I thought "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" had something to do with laundry detergent, and "Salt of the Earth" was about condiments.) Twenty years later, I picked up STAS while living in Ireland, and was astonished by the second track, a song I swore I knew, as if from a past life ... impossible, I thought, I just bought this album ... it instantly brought me back to my earliest memories of childhood ... I remembered suddenly my mother singing "Michael from Mountains" to me, her son, Michael ... it took an international call back to the US to have my mother explain: "that comes from that Judy album you were obsessed with ... you know you learned to read off of that LP jacket and TV Guide." So, Joni had brought "Michael from Mountains" back to me long after my parents had shelved the "JUDITH" album in the attic. (The same thing happened when I heard Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" for the first time as a teenager. "Where have I heard this before? Why am I getting flashbacks of Bert, Ernie, and the Carter Administration?") Cool story. While I told David his recollection of Joni's wolf story was right on the mark based on an interview where I heard Joni tell the story, I don't doubt that your recollections of her taking a tape recorder out to the woods are true as well. Could have been a long project (there *were* 2 yrs between DJRD and Mingus, so she *had* the time to find the perfect wolf :-) Kidding! I know she was REAL busy with the whole project, wanted Mingus to like it, and gives credit to alot of musicians who jammed with her but never made the final cut, so she *was* doing ALOT more than looking for the right wolf - putting words to music, doing some of her own composing, jamming with half the jazz world. If I gave it some time I'd probably recall a mystical coincidence of my own. For now, the best I can come up with is playing Dreamland at 2 or 3am while living at home with my parents, and my mother or father knocking on my door to lower the music, and not being able to distinguish between their knocks and all the percussion :-) Best, -Kenny SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > < all had on me, except to say that I pulled off to the side of road, and shook > for about 10 minutes. >> > > Thanks for the formal introduction, Jack, and the wonderful story!
