["Jamie Zubairi" Subject: Not to Blame (sorry, I don't know if this is technically JC or not) Well, I haven't been paying much attention to the JB/Not to Blame thread since I really haven't caught up with much of list the past month, but I do have to say this -- the first time I listened to Not to Blame, I immediately thought of JB, and this was before I heard ANY of the stories, and this was way back when TI came out which means it was before I discovered JM.com and I didn't even know that Joni and JB even knew each other. To me, it just fit perfectly and it blew me away. And, I also find it dangerous to say that because JFK Jr. said that DH was a nutcase (I'm drawing my own conclusion from the snippet posted yesterday) that JB didn't hit her. I would find JB's defense of himself MUCH more convincing had he said, when Not to Blame came out, that he was shocked that people thought it was him and made some mention that he wanted to talk to Joni about it. Instead, his hatred and his rage at Joni speaks volumes to me. Again, just my opinion, but my opinion (in my opinion) is just as valid as those that seem to defend JB as some sort of saint. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 01:30:50 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Top Five At this moment it is Records: Song to a Seagull Ladies of the Canyon Blue Hejira Night Ride Home Songs: River Blue Amelia Woman of Heart & Mind For Free (you are right, 5 is impossible) Circle Game Night Ride Home Carey Both Sides Now Hejira Kate Bennett Singer/Songwriter Santa Barbara, CA www.katebennett.com "bringing the melancholy world of twilight to life almost like magic…the album grows more intriguing with repeated listening" All Music Guide http://allmusic.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 22:40:10 +1200 From: "Helen M. She named her newborn daughter Kelly Dale in 1965. I wondered why the song was titled "Little Green" . . . that she called her daughter 'little green.' Then this morning, it occurred to me that there is a color "Kelly Green" which one of her paint tubes would have been labeled. Any thoughts or information on this out there? I have a suggestion for those you that have the 'sacred' photos from the Mendel opening. Instead of sending them to everyone who is interested, just upload them to a Internet "hard drive" I created for JMDL at www.xdrive.com. This is an easy alternative to attaching it to separate e-mails to tons of people. Just upload it to this internet site, then let everyone know it is there. I'm sure many photos will eventually be on the jmdl.com and jonimitchell.com sites, but this is a short-term solution. It currently has the Musician magazine article from Bob and a folders for photos. I encourage all JMDLers to use it! 1. - Go to www.xdrive.com 2. - Type JMDL as the User name (it is case sensitive) 3. - Type Joni as the password (also case sensitive) 4. - Select the Login button If someone else is logged on, then try again a little bit later. Download or Upload your files using the buttons at the top. It is pretty simple to use. And, of course, Logout, when you are done. I've been walking on air for the last few days since you posted this just soaking in your words! after 32 years it's quite a rush, to say the least... kind of an unusual social situation really... not sure what I'd compare it to... you have this friend and you both play at a local club.. you shoot pool together, eat together, listen to the jukebox together... and then one day they're gone... off to be a star... and suddenly you can't even get an appointment! I remember it was funny, when I got out of the service in '73 I went home to Mich and I was going to the small college in Port Huron... I had hitchiked out of that farmtown, actually a smaller town south of PH, in '67 with my guitar case, basically considered an outcast, 'one of them longhaired freaks!' and when I returned in '73 I was a local legend with people lining up to kiss my butt (all of course because I knew HER and I had played with HER!) and ALL the guys with long hair! well, I got a folk music club going at the college and it was goin' ok and then people started asking me to call Joni and ask her to come and play... it had never occurred to me and I thought' naw...' but they were persistant so I said ok and called her agency... she never returned the call... no surprise to me. so there it is. 32 years and the last time I saw Joni was Detroit in '68... and then you talked to her: >>...But the "hi" I was extending wasn't from me. I let her know that I promised if the opportunity presented itself I was going to say "hi" from a couple of people she knew from the early Detroit days. She said "Sure. Now who would that be?" "Well, Joni, Pat Bolan(d) (Henry) says hi!" Joni, "Oh sure!!" Pat she remembered you instantly with a smile on her face!>> oh wow! there goes that floatin' feeling again! it sure feels good to know I gave her a smile again... I used to tease her and joke with her... sometimes she would get off by herself and be lookin' kinda down... (maybe thinking about Kilauren, she never said) so it became a challenge to sneak a smile up on her... I gotta ask... you don't say here whether you showed her the pics I sent you... did you? is that how she remembered or just mentioning me at the Cellar or what? did you mention about brian moss and mike heath? I don't mean to pressure you... you really did great! more than I could ask. I know it can't be easy talking to the person you admire most who's art has so filled your life... even I would be nervous and I know her! LoL! it's just that I need to know the details... pleeeze? ;o) >>I passed on that Pat told me to tell you, he still has a mad crush on you and congratulations for so successfully bringing your art to people.> good job! good job! >>Pat, you got a lovely "Ohhhh, that's sweet.">> swoon! >>Then I asked your question. "Joni, Pat has always wanted to know if you were the one that got the record people to come calling on him." At this point Joni got fuzzy in her recall "Oh, that was so many years ago -- I may have -- I can't remember.">> that figures... I'm sure it was her! I've always said Joni is so honest but this is the kind of little white lie she would tell... even in 1967 there's no way a record company would send an agent way out in the sticks (PH is about 60 miles north of Detroit, up on the thumb) to offer a nat'l recording contract to someone who hadn't even sent out a demo tape or played that much out of state. most folkies were constantly on the circuit and hit every folkfest they could... I was homebound... but hey, 33 years is 33 years... I guess she coulda forgot. not that I'm all that important to remember, I just figured she'd remember what *she* did. >>Then I said "oh and one more thing -- Pat says, for heaven's sake write!" Hebert pops in and laughs -- "that's what everyone wants Joni to do!" We laughed for a minute over that one...>> penny, PLEASE tell me you gave her my address! (and the pics) she probably won't but I can still dream... especially now thanks to you and les and jmdl! oh wow! there goes that feeling again... ya know, it's hard to get traction when yer floatin' two feet off the ground! LoL! >>No hug, like someone else reported. I just get to darn business-like when I talk to her and put up a stiff, unapproachable front. If I had known I was going to run into Joni, I probably would have had a couple of drinks between the bank and the Mendel and things would have been more relaxed. But then again, after a couple of shots maybe I would have forgotten Pat's last name from his Detroit days. I'll happily pass on being relaxed enough to get a famous *Joni hug*, in exchange for being able to fulfill a promise. ;-) >> and fill it you did! thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! :o)))))) penny, I was thinking about what you said here... about hugs? ya know it might not be the way you perceive it. Joni has always been very casual and makes those around her feel good and relaxed if possible, but I don't recall her ever being as quick to hug people as maybe some others were... she never said, but I think that maybe the way she feels about it is she will accomodate those who want to hug but she would rather hug someone when she means it... you know, like in the context of a conversation when it is linked to something that was said and not just a meaningless gesture. I may be wrong, I sure don't know everything, but think of how literal she is in the things she expresses and how every expression has to have meaning... like a guitar part that sounds like laughter or a vocal that sounds like surf... hey, who knows? maybe * you're* the same way! at any rate, I would think that it's more likely you picked up on her feelings on this rather than the way you see it. ...just my $.02. :o) thanks so much! pat NPIMH: Cactus Tree There's a man who's sent a letter And he's waiting for reply He has asked her of her travels Since the day they said goodbye He writes "Wish you were beside me We can make it if we try" He has seen her at the office With her name on all his papers Thru the sharing of the profits He will find it hard to shake her From his memory And she's so busy being free http://homepages.go.com/~badwolff/albums/album1/ Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 08:59:21 -0400 From: B Merrill Subject: Prince's song written about Joni? For Joni's work, I think that "Court and Spark" , "The Hissing of Summer Lawns", and "Blue" suffer the most from losing a pause to reflect, since the second half of each begins with an uptempo track. Not to make anyone feel old, but really here's a question the answer to which gets filed with memories of TV tubes warming up: Who remembers why multi LP sets have the record sides numbered 1-3 and 2-4 on each? The most excruciating media moment I've ever had was arriving home at age 6 later than expected one Sunday night and running to the TV, and hearing half of "I Saw Her Standing There" without its accompanying black and white image. The line in the song is: "Mind if I turn on the radio, "Oh my favorite song" she said. and it was Joni singing "Help Me, I think I'm falling"...." This album also features "Slow Love"... Published July 5 - July 11, 2000 THREE DEGREES CELSIUS AND RISING BY SCOTT WOODS Canadian Hip-Hop Thaws Out The Canadian press has burped up a lot of hoopla lately about the sudden deluge of homegrown hip-hop, and, this being Canada and all, the stories have nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with whether honchos at BET will give a damn. We'll see. One thing, though, remains certain about Canadian hip-hop in the year 2000: It really does exist. If this sounds like faint praise, bear in mind that never in history has such a glut of indigenous urban music been available in shopping malls from Edmonton to Fredericton; nor has any other Can-rapper received the U.S. backing that Toronto's Choclair is getting from Priority Records. (Plus, I'm a Canadian cit izen myself, and apparently it's in my genes to praise faintly—or so a Margaret Atwood book once led me to believe.) Anyway, plenty of evidence suggests that something other than Labatt's is brewing in the Great White these days. Most of the current crop of Can-rap releases comes from Ontario, though there are also pocket shout-outs from British Columbia and—oui, oui, y'all!—Quebec. According to Canadian Hip-hop Online, there are hundreds of rap acts coast to coast, from Nova Scotia to Manitoba to—"representing out of Yellowknife"—the Northwest Territories. Also impressive is the list of American guest stars on the more prominent releases: Guru and Memphis Bleek on Choclair's Ice Cold, Common and Pharoahe Monch on Saukrates's Underground Tapes, KRS-One and the Beatnuts on the Rascalz' Global Warning. Apparently, Choclair's signing is just the beginning: Saukrates recently passed ink with Def Jam, and Toronto's K-OS is being feted by Capitol. "If Choclair can at least go gold in the U.S.," The Source predicts, "the floodgates from Canada will burst open." It'll be interesting to see if this happens, but even more interesting to see if anyone notices. For although we may be on the threshold of a Can-rap explosion, there's no evidence of an identifiable Can-rap sound. Can-crits of all stripes have harped on about Canadian lack of identity for as long as the country's existed, but a challenge would be nice. Most Can-rappers are of West Indies descent, and Saukrates and the Rascalz exhibit a ragga-hop influence: The former turns in a delicious bit of stuttering patois on "Ay, Ay, Ay," while the latter snag Jamaican dancehall prince Barrington Levy, who brings a lilting charm to "Top of the World" (not least because his chorus is a dead ringer for "Indiana Wants Me"). These are mere hints of what Choclair himself recently described in an interview as Can-rap's unique "musical gumbo." But to find something of the national spirit, you have to go back to the genre's pioneer, Maestro Fresh Wes (currently just Maestro; in a year or two, he'll have whittled his moniker down to "Mice"). In 1992's "Conductin' Thangs," Maestro rapped, "Because I'm from Canada/Don't think I'm an amateur," a hilariously self-deprecating semi-boast (can you imagine, say, Ol' Dirty Bastard pleading not to judge him too harshly because he's from the States?). And in his aborted 1998 comeback, "Stick to Your Vision," Maestro wistfully tapped into the mood of the Guess Who's "These Eyes": Hearing it while stuck in Toronto traffic one sunny afternoon, I thought for a minute the local "Psychedelic Sunday" DJ might've dropped the wrong color tablet. (It wasn't the first rap to credit Bachman/Cummings, though: In '95, the Lordz of Brooklyn bit "American Woman," and come to think of it, P.M. Dawn paid homage to Joni Mitchell in "Looking Through Patient Eyes." So maybe there's a Can-rap heritage after all.) Maestro's more or less old school by now, and apparently an anomaly: Despite a nod here and there to "T-dot-O," nothing on Choclair's Ice Cold suggests any specific place or culture (aside from the vast culture of hip-hop itself). Though on Amazon.com "a music fan from Columbus, Ohio" recently wrote: "Choclair has some great rhymes and an almost unmatched flow, but the beats on [Ice Cold] are very simple... Maybe that's the Canadian style. If it is, this is probably the last Canadian album I am purchasing as I prefer the sounds of the dirty South." Choclair may not be from the "dirty South," but he does have a dirty mouth. On Ice Cold he proves himself a real three-letters-on-his-mind guy, a new Canadian Loverboy who turns himself loose on anything that walks—and, predictably, picks up flak in Toronto papers for doing so (not that I disagree with all of the criticism; his healthy desires sometimes make way for a creepy, cartoon machismo). Ice Cold's catchy first single, "Let's Ride," is built around the sort of plunky piano hook that you could sit down at Grandma's Steinway and learn in 30 seconds (though you probably need at least your grade two to figure out "Ride" 's left-hand harmony). The rest of the album often leaves me, well, ice-cold. It's a credible production, but present-day hip-hop—certainly from a technical standpoint (and especially in comparison to rock)—is almost always credible. Even at its most generic. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 2000 12:45:42 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Joni & P.M. Previously, the masters reverted to the artist's ownership (from the record co.) after a certain number of years.(15?). The new rule would allow the record companies to retain ownership indefinitely. There was no debate or committee or anything, they just slipped it through, and it sent shock waves through the music industry. Henley, along with Sheryl Crow and others have been pressuring Washington to nullify the bill. He also wrote to Billboard to urge musicians to band together to form an organization that would stand up for musician's rights. Incredibly, none exists presently (the musician's union does not involve itself in such matters). That may have been the "warpath" Joni was referring to. I was just musing to myself the other day while watching Ashara's lovely Video Tree that I received a couple of months ago, how I have changed musically from when I was 14. I was young and very 'pop' musically, not really into rock or anything that I couldn't dance to as I love to dance. I didn't know how to play the guitar (and still don't really, unless it's in an open tuning). And if I had gone to a gig where a favourite band was playing (I believe U2 were on after Joni at the Amnesty gig) and here was some woman singing about politics and taxes and the global situation, I wouldn't have been so polite. But after 12, 13 years of loving Joni's music and loving The 3 Great Stimulants and DED (after not liking it for a long time, so stone me) watching it the other day I realise that , while probably not have actually *thrown* a water bottle at a musician while they were playing, I would have been at least disrespectful in some less obtrusive way. If I had gone to that gig and not realised that it was the same woman that sang Rainy Night House (a song that I was completely mesmerised by at the time, not knowing anything else about the singer, I just knew it as a hauntingly beautiful song) I would have dissed her too. It was 2 years later when I found the singer to the song and a good 2 years after that when I would have got DED and not liked it on first listen. BTW, has anyone seen the video? Her version of Hejira at the gig is so powerful and sharp, it brings tears to my eyes, the way she attacks the words.
