Hi Everybody, I read Helen's post about "Dog Eat Dog" and also agree. I love "The Three Great Stimulants". I think it's one of Joni's all-time best melodies. Also, the title song. And I remember giving a friend a copy of DED and him exclaiming "Her vocals on Shiny Toys are just so expressive". I also liked the versions of DED and TTGS when she did Farm Aid. But "Hejira" and "For The Roses" remain my top two of her vast and wonderful output. I hope she starts writing again soon. Court & Spark 2.) Miles of Aisles 3.) Hejira 4.) Hissing of Summer Lawns 5.) Turbulent Indigo Top 5 Songs: 1.) A Case of You (from any album [does that count as only one?} ) 2.) Last Time I Saw Richard 3.) Peoples Parties 4.) Cactus Tree 5.) For Free Joe ( In Rhode Island ) ... geez, I have got to get a better handle than that ! Any suggestions ? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 21:22:05 EDT From: MDESTE1@aol.com Subject: Free Psychiatric Help for listers I've been watching this "top five" albums thread go on now for some time and I began to notice that quite a few fellow listers have mentioned that Dog Eat Dog was on their list. After seeing the numbers grow and actually follow on the heels of an entire other thread of people praising this album I decided that i just had to do something. I couldnt stand to see so many of my favorite people losing their minds. This was no time to sit back while the horrible sounds of DED eats at their brains like some form of Ebola virus. There have in fact been other examples of this. An entire French village in the 1800s ate each other and the question arose as per whether this was because of moldy bread or not and I knew that DED hadnt been produced or released yet BUT the symptoms were so similar. In any event I contacted a friend who is among the foremost authorities on DEDITIS. He CAN cure you guys.He has already cured something like 2500 victims already (most of whom lived in Los Angeles). Its not biological, its a lifestyle choice, listening to this album. He said people can be conditioned to slowly come back to reality and that they will know they have been cured when they play the album and their cheeks pucker and they immediately replace the record with something worthwhile like Song to a Seagull. A few simple 50,000 volt charges from a taser in a special place while listening to a real album of good Joni music and bingo you are cured. He has agreed to cure the first 15 listers for FREE and give a substantial discount to the rest. His normal price for the one time treatment is $25,000. So please email me off list and I will pass along your mailing address to him. His name is Dr. Jackson James Taylor Brown DDB LLC. The best part is he travels alot and can arrange to cure you in your home. Before long hopefully we should have all the deranged listers back to reality and enjoying good music (except for Wally the K who wants to be the way he is and wont change for anything). With much love and kisses. marcel deste. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 08 Jul 2000 19:49:43 -0600 From: John Downes Subject: References to Joni Hi folk, I don't know how many of you have heard of Nick Kershaw. He is (was?) a British singer in the 1980's. His third, and possibly last album was called "Radio Musicola". In the title track he puts down the recording industry as a whole. The opening lines of the song are: Black vinyl man with black plasticized imagination More fodder for the new lost generation I've got a question to send you to the nearest closet Why can't you let us do it like JONI does it? .... Chorus: We're growing up, we're growing up, to radio Musicola....etc.. In the liner notes, Joni's name is in capitals, just like above, as if he was giving it special emphasis, and no doubt referring to "our Joni". I wonder if she ever heard this song herself? If you want them, send a request and I'll e-mail them to you. - -John in Edmonton PS - I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the story which was told by one of the presenters that evening about the fellow with AIDS travelling to Vancouver to meet with fellow Joni Mitchell enthusiasts. What was the last line she said that obviously touched Joni so? Something like "AIDS is the reason for the.......(?), but Joni is the reason for the friendships". If anyone can remember what it was I'd like to hear it. I thought Joni looked pretty choked up by that. Can you imagine having such a far reaching effect in this world like Joni does? It must blow her and her parents away sometimes! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Jul 2000 03:08:53 GMT From: "James Phillips" Subject: Joni's Steve Klein custom acoustic I was wondering if anyone here in Joni-land can help with an answer for me. What year was the Steve Klein custom made acoustic made for Joni? I was reading about it in the homepage, and I didn't see anything about a date that it was made. And the ultimate question is, though she has the VG8 unit, does she still have that acoustic at all? James who wishes he had that Steve Klein custom acoustic:) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 23:29:35 -0500 From: Mark Domyancich Subject: Re: TOP 5 Oh, what the hey... it seems to change like the seasons: Albums: 1 Hejira 2 Blue 3 FTR 4 Mingus 5 DJRD and Songs: 1 Jericho - this week and last this one has been playing nonstop 2 Blue Motel Room 3 oh Jesus! The Magdalene Laundries ** There has been a lot of talk recently about The Hissing of Summer Lawns as an entire composition, this is after all the way it was conceived and executed. It is my opinion, however, that STAS was the first of her "concept" works. Originally STAS, in it's L.P. form, was all about the city on one side and all about the seashore on the other (The way Terry Reid's "River" was all acoustic on one side and all electric on the other). I still find myself listening to my vast vinyl collection on occasion if only to take those few moments to flip the album over and sometimes flip my mindset at the same time in anticipation of the other side. While the quality of sound from a CD is far superior, I think a little is lost by the missing division of two sides in some works and some CDs are enhanced by the continuity of the music. STAS was my first Joni "album" and will therefore always have a place of honor in my music library.
