There's so much to respond to - we have enough to talk about for many weeks, IMO! To all those bowled over by both her and her paintings - I told you so! ;-) I'm enjoying reading your reactions. I am a little shocked that she has all the paintings for sale. Although it is great that she is finally putting them out in the world, I wonder how it feels for her to part with them after so long. I would think it must be a little wrenching, but ultimately a good thing. It still is unclear whether they have fixed price tags or are going to the highest bidder. I also wonder if part of the purchase price of the paintings would include a contribution to the Mendel. I think there could be a strong potential of bringing in quite an influx of funds to them if that is the case. Maybe they could build a whole new section called the "Joni Mitchell Pavillion" - it would be more than fitting. I appreciate John's information regarding the paintings and liked that Joni is admitting she may need a little art tutoring. I still think she is a great artist but a little technical advice and instruction here and there can only make her greater. Loved the detail of the cats' contributions, too - gawd! Saskatoon sounds like a sweet city filled with very sweet and friendly people. Someone forwarded a scan to me today of Joni with her parents there and I thought it was so neat how stylish and youthful they look considering their ages. Very hip, that Myrtle and Bill ;-) How wonderful that they could be a part of this. Joni also looked fabulous and in peak glow. I hope she had a good time and did not get too distracted or discombobulated by the mobbing hordes. It sounds like Gilles Hebert is a real good guy amd was looking out for her, though. I imagine he deserves a ton of credit for putting this all together. Sweet stuff and I look forward to reading more. So..I charged about 40 extra to my credit card, and had them mailed to my house. If I've already promised you one, it is already set aside for you. If anyone else wants one, let me know and I will figure out the logistics when I get home after the 16th, and I'll get one to you. I just want to cover my costs, and hopefully, I won't be stuck with 40 catalogs when I get home! Also, if someone can pick me up the Newsweek with the article about Joni while I'm away, that would be great. Sal and I are continuing our own Hejira, making our way west through some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. ...."I love the man beside me...we love the open road...." It's Leslie Shapiro from Boston. I am writing to you as one of the lucky people who had a dream come true by not only being able to see the inner workings of Joni Mitchell through her visual art, but by being able to see her at the same time. Not only was the atmosphere graced by her 40 year retrospective of her visual artwork, it was also enhanced by the body of her music being played endlessly throughout the show. Those of us lucky enough to go to the show's opening were given the gift of her art, music and presence at the same time. And some of us were even lucky enough to have a few moments of her undivided attention while she signed her show catalog, posed for pictures, and generally chatted. The ease of this experience was in the peaceful setting of Joni's hometown. No where else could Joni or her public have had such a relaxed time. I can imagine of this event were held in LA, NY, or Boston, security would have been a more needed presence, and her fans' hearts from all over the place would not have been so fulfilled. All my hopes for the trip were met, and more. My trip to Saskatoon gave me the context of the soul from which she draws her inspiration as demonstrated through her landscapes and lyrics. The loping prairie, the grain silos, and the famous Broadway Bridge. I will never forget the chance of a lifetime I have to cherish for the rest of my days. Hi Lister listers. I don't know the precise numbers, but the gallery put the official count for the day at around 2,700. That number included the five hundred (600?) or so 'special' vip guests. (Who could have been more special than us????) I couldn't resist throwing this in. It is the first page of 'the' letter I gave Joni. I mention this only in the interest of sparking (hopeful. hopeful.) a thread. One of my favorite things is to hear the stories of how Joni's music came into people's lives. A question I love asking listers and thought it would be fun to share mine with Joni. So put away the grammars, thesaures'es, etc. and bear with me. I'm still buzzed that she read something I wrote... I feel like I had a conversation with Ms. Siquomb. And it feels a lot like heaven. Hasn't worn off a bit. I should be smiling thru 20005... Blue was the first. 1974. Stevenson Hall, nineth floor. 10:30pm. Or so. My college roommate, Mark Galway practically cornered me and made me listen to it. And truth be told, I hated the darned thing!!! Well, 'didn't get it.' would be more accurate. My delicate ears, narrowly weaned on the Motown Sound, Smokey Robinson and the Jackson Five, simply could not hang. Blue came across more like conversation to me than song. If anything, I was more fascinated by the album cover. I loved the deep blue printing and the horde of fine type. Wow. Pretty. A part of me had craved deeper lyrical content in music. Here it was in spades. You could sit down to this thing with a cup of coffee. Still, it took Bob Moerbeck and 'Carey' to seal the deal. Bob Moerbeck was a gymnast, one of a host of jocks on my floor, and certainly the one who most charmed my eyes. He had jet black hair, dark, deep Dondi eyes and an amazingly sweet disposition. It didn't take long to figure that by leaving my dorm room open and Blue playing on the stereo, Bob would somehow find his way down the hall for a listen. Whaaa, I'm not stupid. --Mark, put that record on! He was sooo gentle and so sweet. It was just an innocent crush really. I doubt he ever knew I liked him, but I did. In time, Blue grew less effective in procurring visits from Bobbo. Instead, it began to work its charms on me. Carey, even on that first listen, melded into my heart. There was a romantic, far off quality to it I absolutely love. The rhythms, the 'exotic' settings and the curious harmonies of the mandolin tuning absolutely captivated me. By summer, when I was back in the familiar quarters of Chicago's west side, I craved that record something fierce. First chance I got, I ran out and bought it, followed by Court and Spark. Those early years were the best. There was 'new' Joan to be had anytime I could scrape up the cash to buy one. It wasn't until the grueling wait that 'Hissing of Summer Lawns" ended, that I realized these beauties weren't coming out on a monthly basis. What a revelation it was to walk into Record Revolution and the first sound I heard was 'Summer Lawns' over the speakers. Wow!!! New Joni!!! I rushed to the cashier and snatched up a copy of the album from beneath the large photo display of you swimming languidly in a silvery green pool. I raced home and lost myself in the grand sweet glory of your beautiful new imagery. The evocative lyrics. The jazzier voicing. The senuous sounds. Initially, It was at first unnerving to buy your albums and discover such dramatic changes in the sound. I was buying them in reverse order so they were more and more spare and 'folk' oriented as I progressed backward. And why did I expect them all to be the same? Suddenly, here was your music taking a huge leap forward and I was knocked back for a loop, loving it. Loving it! Loving it! Burhundi Drums! Awesome!! Sweet Bird!!!!! Exquisite, poetic beauty!! In time, the journey became more and more important. Your music has been my chiefest pleasure in life. I have never cared for the way the world is. Even less, I have never cared for the way the world accepts the way the world is. But amid all this, there are things that have made living in this time, in this place, as beautiful and rich and perfect as life could possibly be. Your art has been that for me. Time and time again you have crafted gifts of immesurable beauty and meaning. And for it all, I am forever grateful to you. There are not words enough to say, "Thank you." But I do thank you with every last part of my being. I wish you every possible happiness. Every imaginable joy. Good health and many, many years of love. What ever the toil, the madness of the media, some of us, many of us 'got it.' And we deeply, gratefully thank you. Thank you, Joni. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 01:38:17 -0400 From: "Ken (slarty)" Subject: Re: songs for and about joni It's possibly true.
