She wasn’t talking hair color. Though Mitchell is known for her exacting accounts of the raptures and agonies of love, she’s always been a student of jazz and classic torch song, and has allowed those languages to enrich her compositions. After winding through the languid opener “You’re My Thrill” with a 70-piece orchestra, she explained that on her most recent album, Both Sides Now, and this tour, her idea was to use standards, and several of her own songs, to trace the arc of a relationship from first flicker to final ember. Complaining that “science has reduced romance to a trick of nature,” Mitchell told the crowd that her goal was to reclaim love’s mysteries. She then introduced the second song, “At Last,” by setting the scene: “Now we’re smitten, and we celebrate that fact.” At first these explanatory riffs were welcome. But pretty soon they became tedious - a little like hearing Mitchell give a Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra lecture on love songs. By describing the emotional landscapes, and explaining precisely where in the narrative arc she was each time, she put romance under a different kind of microscope, and at times diminished the nuances and contradictory undercurrents of the songs:Where others have interpreted “You’ve Changed” as a generalized lament, for her it describes a clear turning point. Still, Mitchell’s treatment of “You’ve Changed” was a magnificent study in contrasts. Some phrases arrived in a deep and enveloping Billie Holiday blue, others were marked by pencil-sketch precision. Sometimes she articulated the half steps of the melodies cleanly, other times she smeared them together in grand glassandos. And where many pop singers have approached torch songs with an intent to dazzle, Mitchell played everything cool. She thought lots about what not to sing, and as a result her phrases were elegant miniatures, triumphs of understatement that sometimes rode atop the orchestra’s crescendos and sometimes existed in a separate universe. Mitchell was about halfway through her second set when she finished with the love-song cycle. She then turned her attention to what she called her “obscure and difficult material,” and this offered several surprises, including the encore, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Trouble Man,” and a gorgeous treatment of the intricate title track from Hejira. This surging tone poem utilized the colors of the orchestra brilliantly, and suggested that should Mitchell want to explore the large-canvas approach further, she’s got plenty of material that’s well suited to it. ===== "No paper thin walls, no folks above No one else can hear the crazy cries of love" yeah, right __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If I remember correctly (you need grey cells for that, don't you?), someone here on the list from the UK was compiling those 'errors' for submission to the publisher. I don't remember who, though. As someone who has stayed on the periphery of your group through my best friend/soul-brother Ric (rickielee), I felt especially gratified to have met some of you in person...Kenny, Paul from NYC, Edward and Walter from NJ, Simon (the keeper of the flame),Claudia my wonderful seat-partner, and David Cohen whose amazing initiative and courage allowed yours truly to piggyback on his plan and steal a few amazing seconds with Joni...I know most of you have already heard me foam at the mouth over this, but for the benefit of those members who might be reading who weren't there, I'll give the abridged version. I arrived at the E-Centre quite early to wait for Claudia SanSoucie who was driving up from Baltimore to share my extra ticket (thanks to Ric!) I parked across from the main entrance at about 4:15, not realizing that it was also adjacent to the "VIP" gate. I noticed some people who I thought were E-Centre ees. standing next to the gate (but were really David, his wife and friend...) when suddenly, a big black limo rolled by, made a pass ,and came back...my heart started pounding when it pulled up to the gate about 20 feet from my car. David then proffered a big smile and held up a box of (roses?) ...The limo stopped, the smoked glass door rolled down, and then I realized, it WAS her...David spoke for a while ,then bolted for his car to retrieve his guitar and bring it back to the limo. Heart REALLY pounding now, I crossed the street and by now, the back door was open and there was Joni, strumming and tuning David's guitar with riffs from "Sex Kills" ! In my besotted state, I thought it was "Turbulent Indigo", but what the h*ll did I know at that point?? At about 5:00 AM that morning, I had this inspired idea to try and present Joni with something as my seat was pretty close (5th row)...but what?? flowers? well, I thought she would get lots of those..so. then it hit me...I have a small pocket-size volume of Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" that I have traveled with for years..YES, that was it... his verse reminded me of hers in many ways ...so I would give her the volume, with a brief little note inside the flyleaf...(so much for the "abridged" version, huh gang?) When David and his group backed away from the limo, I sort of jumped in front and was trying to hand the book into Joni when one of her "handlers", managers, ect. started to close the door on my arm..(D'oh!!) It was only the cry of "wait, wait" coming from Joni that saved me from an embarrassing and painful injury...the door reluctantly opened again and there I was looking dumb and dumber with my very own 10-second "window" and special "deer-in the-headlights" expression...so, gathering all of my wit and sophistication,I proffered the book to her (I think she thought it was for her to sign) and gushed something really urbane like "God Bless You" and "it would be an honor if you kept it," and" I'm looking forward to the show"..the guys with her were less than impressed, but Joni did say "Oh, Whitman" (how about THAT?? [lol] ) and that was more than good enough for me as I backed away from the limo bowing in supplication....completely dazed, I stumbled back to my car, immediately called Ric at work to blather and gloat and then Claudia pulled up and realized with devastation that she had missed this amazing moment by just a few minutes... Well, that's my story and I'm stickin' to it by golly...David will have to fill in the blanks with better facts..but I truly enjoyed the show and entire experience...for me, the bass accompaniment by Klein and arrangement by Mendoza for "Hejira" was worth the price of admission by itself...the cool way he just bent towards Joni, feeding off of her energy, and her, his, was wonderful.... Thanks again for allowing me to be part of your experience JDMLers, I'll always remember 6/2/00 !! It is a pleasure for me to be a part of the JMDL, and I want to thank Cassy and her husband Thom for directing me to the site. I met Cassy and Thom at the Joni Mitchell concert at Pine Knob, Clarkston on Wednesday, May 31st. What a pleasure it was. I won't go on about the show. It was glorious, late starting and all. As I told Cassie, Joni could have come on stage and barked and I'd have been happy. Joni has been a big part of my life ever since I discovered her music in 1969 and met her at the Avon Theatre in Stratford in July of that year. In the middle 1970's I attended a Joni Mitchell concert here in Detroit at the Masonic Temple. We had found out where she was staying and being the reckless young person I was then, I went to a flower shop and found a strange looking beautiful flower called a King Protea. I bought one and had it boxed and took it to her hotel, with a song I had recorded (I am a singer-songwriter) of her unreleased song "Winter Lady." I asked the bell captain if he would take the flower and tape up to her, asking him that if he could not deliver it to please return it to me and I would not be angry. He came back empty handed and said "You should have taken it up yourself, she answered the door." I could have kicked myself, but I was shy and didn't want to disturb her by going up after the fact, so my friends and I went on to the concert. She came out and did her first set, went off for intermission and when she entered the stage for her second set, she was carrying my protea in her hands. She asked if there was a guy named Gabriel in the audience, (that was the singing name I was using then) and I identified myself. She asked me what kind of flower it was, as she had never seen it before. I, in utter ecstasy, stammered my response that it was a flower from Australia, to which she replied, "my, if must have had a long root!" In the years that followed I re-recorded "Winter Lady" in a more professional manner. When "Taming The Tiger" came out, I was dumfounded to see, on the back of the CD, a table with a vase of proteas sitting on it. It was like a one-to-one message, maybe not really for me, but I felt it was since I was the first to give her the flower. At the Pine Knob Concert, I decided I would bring them to her again, and that is when I met Cassy and Thom. Cassy saw me approaching the venue, and said "lovely proteas." I was surprised that she knew what they were, and we proceeded to have a wonderful conversation about our love for Joni, and some trivia I passed along. I walked down to the stage and asked the security gentleman, "What are my chances of placing these flowers on stage for Joni?" He said, "Absolutely zero unless you do it right now." I placed them on stage and they lay before her during the entire concert, but she never picked them up. After the concert, I went to retrieve them, and a stagehand was clearing up, and looked at me, as I went to reach for them. I said, "Joni didn't get my flowers so I thought I would just take them home." He said somewhat gruffly, "She's gone" and then looked at me intently and said, "She's still here, I'll make sure she gets them." He proceeded to pick up the flowers and take them directly backstage the way Joni exited. I only hope she really did receive them. I want to thank Cassy and Thom for directing me to the wonderful people at the Joni Mitchell discussion list, and for inviting me to the hotel after the concert. Everyone I met was wonderful, I am sorry I don't remember everyone's names, I was a bit in awe and overwhelmed by all of it. But it was a night I will always remember. I have much to share with you all in the future, and hope you will feel free to E-mail me with your questions. I don't know everything, but I have an extensive collection of rarities and interesting tidbits about Joni. I did notice that someone had asked if Joni ever mentioned Kelly in the early days. I can tell you that I have a live recording of "Little Green" where Joni says at the end of the song, "Kelly green, be a gypsy dancer." It was the only reference I know of, but it solidified the fact that "Little Green" was indeed written for Kilauren, and of course, when it was recorded on "Blue" Kelly was omitted from the song. In fact, she sang the song with a somewhat different melody line on the live performance I have. Well just some Joni trivia for you all. To Brian - I am Tony's friend and welcome you to write me. Wow - what a twist, for you to know my dear friend and also be as big of a fan as I am! Terry, you were wonderful at the piano at the Townsend! I could use you on one of my recording sessions. Cassy and Thom, what can I say, if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't be writing this....Thanx, I hope we will become good friends. I plan on doing my performance of "Winter Lady" at a club soon. I hope the Detroit group will come out and hear me do it, and judge me honestly. I can take criticism and hope you will enjoy hearing a song perhaps you have never heard! Hey, it's my birthday today, and like Joni said, "I feel like I'm just being born....." Thanks to you all! It's time for another DEDtime story. ( I apologize that this is a little late for the thread but I was away this weekend and lots of gardening took the place of the net.) Way back when, when the album first came out there was no such thing as CD. We were so much younger then, we're younger than that now. Ok, the story. I had made a cassette of DED and when I was going to the USSR (it was still the USSR), I took it with me to play in walkperson (aka walkman). The reason I was going to USSR was to shoot a documentary about the very first film student exchange between the US and the USSR. We (seven students from Northwestern) spent three weeks there shooting with seven students from the Victor Grasimov Institute of Cinematography. One of my favorite songs was/is Good Friends (the beginning is almost one of those shivery moments) and I was listening to that song as we were riding in a van across Moscow. I had hit it off with one of the Soviet students, a cinematographer named Sergei, and he asked me what I was listening to and I told him. He asked me if he could listen to it and he instantly loved it. He listened to it over and over and, of course, I gave him the cassette to keep. His father was a well-known (in USSR and other parts of the world who would allow Soviets to visit freely) jazz musician, a saxophonist, and Sergie talked about his love for Pat Metheny and other jazz musicians. He was struck, of course, by the jazz influence in Joni's music. Being a sentimental fool, I think of that van ride every time I hear Good Friends (I have to see you, every once or twice a year . . . ) and of Sergei being turned on to Joni. Welcome and Happy Birthday...and thanks for giving us *all* a terrific present in the form of your post. Hope you'll be hanging around here a long, long time. I hope I made a little sense in my post. (Yeah I know "VERY LITTLE SENSE") I'm at work right now and really didn't have time to think this out clearly." HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh from the mouths of "babes" Oh my gawd this killed me. Thank you Jimmy for posting this and making a whole lotta sense to me. After reading the nasty little threads that I have been blessfully missing for the past few weeks, this came as some much needed comic relief. And also a hearty thanx to Les for "laying some sod" of real good quality on the issues. What pisses me off about this whole damn mess is the inaccuracies of some of these posts, that have Joni performing songs that she didn't even perform. As in the UNSIGNED post entitled "You Can't Go Home Again" the writer says she did Refuge of the Roads and Let The Wind Carry Me. If that was the case I lost consiousnous for a good bit at that show. (THANKS TO JJ FOR CORRECTING THAT BIT) My opinion, as undereducated, naive, and whatever other category I fall in, is, if we (AND the listmeisters) are going to tie up the bandwidth let's make it at least accurate information. Remember, we don't want to being passing a bunch of misinformation around. In regard to opinions, everyone has their rights to their own. As far as what goes on the respective pages well I guess that would be up to the guy that signs the checks that pay for them. Also in regard to how we treat each other on this list, it sure would be nice to avoid the name calling. I don't give a shit how HURT you are by YOUR interpretation of someones post, there is NO good reason to put them down in THIS forum. Take it to private mode. If you wanna lay a big turd please don't do it in OUR punch bowl (it bruises the gin). I read alot of posts from listmembers just begging for people to stop with this petty bull shit. I read one sided apologies that are never reciprocated or passed on to the rest of us that could give a crap. For you really sensitive folks out there, I hope this post does not offend you, but hopefully inspires you to respect ourselves more. I will encourage more of you to take part in reunions and Jonifests with other list members, it's truly amazing how such a diverse group of people were able to let their hair down and have a gay old time without having pissing contests. And besides group hugs are really cool.
