This was THE BEST, bar none, Live Performance I have ever experienced. Even better than A Day In The Garden, and those who were around me that day may remember Joni's effect on me that day! Being in the second row on Friday evening certainly made a difference. Being a mere 20 feet away from her, with a direct sightline between us, allowed me to make eye contact a few times, and even lead the chorus of standing ovations. Joni's voice was right on. I heard no hoarseness at all. She was having a great time. She knew it was the end of a wonderful tour and was having fun. She rocked and swayed behind her microphone stand (where no regrets were taped nor chewing gum stuck ;-) Her hands were in constant motion, as if she were transcribing each song in emotional sign language. I found myself not being able to sit still in my seat. I must have looked like one of those spring-necked dogs people keep on the rear decks of their cars, my head bopping during every song and my lips silently tracing out every lyric right along with her. The nice old lady sitting next to me must have thought I was obsessed, or something :-) And when I explained about our JMDL family, she knew for sure. And Joni's hand motions really got to me during Ludwig's Tune, as she played air piano (right along with me) during the non-vocal interludes. Simply amazing! It was wonderful being able to get togather with so many jmdlers before and at the show, both old and new. The Chinese Cafe owner wanted to know when we were coming back! I hope we get to do this again very soon, with the release of the next album. Joni, Larry, and Vince - you all did great! Take a short break, then get back to work! Though I must say I am so-o-o-o-o envious of you all there seeing Joni. I sat down and listened to BSN for an nth time and goddamn I heard something new. Nuttin specific, just new depths. As if Joni has never done that to us before. DJRD comes to mind. If ever a work grew that was the one. To this day the title track, is for me, Joni's peak. (Am I opening up a discussion?). The poetry 'bout the eagle and the serpent being at war in me - chezus - the imagery is Shakespearian and the driving repetitiveness of the music adds to the whole. So deep. Quick change of subject though related. We do get a form of MTV here in Indonesia, shallow or what, as my good buddy said emptyV. Good on Joni for speaking out about the shallowness of the current fare. Unfair. No fault of theirs (the BoyZones), they are out there doing it and raking in $$$$$$$$$$$s. But still. My own mother was abhored at the music I listened to at 14. T.Rex. I still love Jeepster, Hot Love, Ride a White Swan. She did like Rod Stewart. What can I say? Music has so many facets. The melody, the rhythm, the ........ but I do agree with Joni that rock and roll came in as bright as a neon light and is burning out right there before us. Here's to a return to Motownism and the like. It describes her performing LOTC songs and Blue songs and 'some new songs' one of which was a 'comparatively light' song 'inspired by a meal at Trader Cie's'. Could this be where the REAL Barangrill is? Has this been answered by someone before? Jamie Zoob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 4 Jun 2000 17:39:45 +0200 From: "John van Tiel" Subject: Meanwhile on the coast of Holland... (long & very N.O.) Meanwhile, on the coast of Holland. . a 6 foot 3 Dutchman is listening to music and staring out over the sea, his head full of slides and fragments from an amazing trip to N.O., his body harbouring the last remnants of a jet lag. It's all so vivid still . I see Paz with a 90-miles-an-hour look in his eyes on Thursday and Paz in deep concentration on stage performing an unbelievably heartfelt version of Hejira at the Howling Wolf. I see Paz thinking seventy thoughts at once and trying to be at twenty places at the same time. I see twenty people sitting in the backyard of Paz's house, all with a snug grinny smile on their faces, listening to Marcel, singing along with Eric (catboy), talking, drinking, no one left out, all apparently totally relaxed - someone in the backyard answering Marian's midnight call from Vienna - Marian who was so deeply missed. I see Kakki, bug-bitten, refusing to give in to fatigue, nasty insects, the effects of Martinis, taking in every second, every moment, every note of music. I feel the warm pang inside when I receive two beautiful framed pictures of Joni as a gift from someone from a different continent whom I just met for the first time and who is as overwhelmed by the whole atmosphere as I am - thanks so much, Jimmy; they're right in front of me. Teach me that hug you have, every detail. I see the hotel room again ('Y'all have a gud jam t'nite') enjoying a quiet moment with Bob, Bernd - you have a winning recipe there with those pecan caramel cookies, Bernd - Claudia & more music. I see Phyllis, exhausted, stretched out on the lawn of the deserted plantation, staring up to the early evening sky, not saying anything - you looked so at ease, so peaceful. My heart fills again for Jack Neilson who went out of his way to please each and everyone of us; he thought only the best was good enough for us. Jack, you ARE the best. Perhaps one day some brilliant man or woman may invent a car that will enable you to drive in three directions at once. That will be the ideal car for you. I still feel the hand on my shoulder and my hand on that hand when candles are burnt in memory of Wally - Tiger Bones undulating like a soothing shroud from the speakers, the respectful silence of a crowd that, for the most part, did not even know him. I hear the disappointment in Jody's voice on the other end of the phone when she says: "I should have gone, I knew it.". I walk again with Bob through the heat of a city with a climate lethal to someone from a Nordic country who loves snow, winter, fire-places and visible breaths. We talk and talk and talk and talk. and I sweat. My heart melts and opens again for Claud, on stage in the Howling Wolf, singing Conversation, and I see her face when the audience bursts into a roar after the last note. She radiates . so beautiful, so unglaublich schön. And I see Leslie again in Paz's living room, singing her soul out in Edith & The Kingpin, David Lahm answering with an unbelievably inspired solo. three, four musicians looking at one another, realising that this is a magic moment. I see Les and Bob going completely out of their minds at the Howling Wolf - Les, the quiet one. yeah, right. I see Lahm pacing the grounds of the Howling Wolf like a caged tiger, revving himself up because he's not on for another hour, and another hour - and, boy, does it all come out once he starts playing! I see quiet Bryan turn into a stage animal. I hear music and music and music. I think of Helen in New Zealand - no, I have never met you, or even written to you off-list - and her "Can I be there, too, next time?" post. Yes, please, Helen, it is worth crossing oceans for. I hear Steve Polifka's powerful voice from the other room and think: "wow". And I see his surprised face in the hotel again after he opens the door. And I feel a light disappointment that I did not spent more time with "My dearest Scarlett", Lori, the one I perhaps looked forward most of all to meet - we must meet up soon here in Europe, either in France or in Holland. and talk for hours, enjoy wine, food, music, gossip. I see the hurt look on Michael's face in the hotel lobby, trying to get someone on the phone and not succeeding. I still feel Monday night's goodbye hug. If only you knew how much I did not want to leave. And I see Jim Man-o'God, and Jerry Never-Mess-With-A-Librarian-About-Facts, the intense concentration on Steve Mixon's face when he plays . and everyone else again . Steve & Pearl, Victor (beautiful CD!) . the non-listers having just as good a time as the listers . And I pop into catgirl and Eric again around midnight on Bourbon Street, both of them glowing like happy children. I see how tired Michael is, and how proud - you have every right to be, Paz. . and I know Joni would have been impressed, too, by the sheer quality of the performances. I am so happy to have been part of the N'Awlins Fest. This is such a wonderful group of friends. To those who are getting fed up with the N.O. what-a-great-time-we-had stories: I will now fade into lurkdom again. By far not everything has been said, but I'll keep some of the diamonds to myself - to treasure. (and now . back to explaining to the people around me that we are no nerds; we have lives already; no, we are no sect; and yes, most of us are quite normal for the rest of the year) The sea is quiet today. I'm even starting to question my premise that there is no such thing as unconditional love... Among the musicians, I was especially glad to meet David Lahm. He's a complex, serious fellow - a paradoxical collision of exuberance and stoicism. He's modest, gifted and intelligent... And then there was the Florida delegation, headed by Jerry Notaro. Along with Jimmy, I have to say that for strangers we fell into conversation so easily; it was really like a reunion. I guess a bond was formed when Jerry and I discovered we attended the same high school in Western New York... As for the man from Havana, everybody was keen on Ed. For one thing, he mixes a generous drink. And his flirtations - also generous - could not be kept in check... I'm still not able to assimilate fully the Sunday concert - an extraordinary assemblage of musical talent performing for seven hours. It included Michael Paz, Victor Johnson, Steve Polifka, CatGirl, Marcel, Claudia S., and Bryan Thomas among the list-members, and a formidable array of outside talent. Bob Muller said (more than once) that this was the best night of his life. I had the feeling he wasn't kidding, and but for my native reticence I'd be inclined to similar enthusiasms. Michael storming past me in the airport. Me saying Michael and Michael saying "You cut your hair." ( Now you see, I think my hair is actually pretty long again these days. ) After we grabbed my luggage, I hurried behind Michael, trying to keep up with his 4 foot steps while Michael carried on a conversation with Jack on his cellphone who turns out was actually walking towards us at that point. Wow, cellphone madness is all I can say. Michael and Jack were all out of sorts over Michael having gotten his car booted minutes before we arrived at his car. Poor Jack felt so bad about it. Now at this point I have yet to have a clue what it means to have your car booted! Everything was moving so fast while I felt like in slow motion, or more like bobbing driftwood once I was riding all through town with fabulous Jack. Michael had abandoned us to take care of business, and he could have not left me in nicer hands. We stopped at Cafe Madelaine for coffee and wonderful sweet delicacies. La Madelaine's assortment of pastries made me immediately feel at home (home meaning Europe) Jack's stories are a story by itself. I am really fortunate to have had this time with him and seeing the French Quarter from his point of view. My best to you Jack ... I wish your move up north will turn out golden. When Jack was ready for his next airport run, he dropped me off in the French Quarter where we were to meet again around 5:30. This gave me plenty of time to leisurely stroll through the Quarter, past various portrait painters and fortune tellers, who could have never predicted my could fortune that was to follow. That evening, Kakki, Michael, and I were the first ones to arrive where Victor played so sweetly and madness was to unfold shortly. I don't recall who all came in which sequence, all I recall is feeling elated. finally putting e-mail addresses with faces! It was as if a curtain was drawn for the opening act. Jimmy and Ed ...Lori and Timo... Leslie and Steve... And when the mysterious Dutch man arrived, I could not help but be drawn to someone so familiar -- to step up without hesitation to give a somewhat puzzled and travelweiry looking John a very special welcoming hug. Now that he knows me a bit, I'm sure it doesn't seem that strange anymore. From there on things get almost hazy and dreamlike. The great food that followed, more of Victor accompanied by Steve --a tasty monster on the mandolin. The atmosphere of humid golf coast warmth mixed with the laughter and chatter piled into Jack's primo limo service as we drove through the night ... I know I could go on and on recalling all the details of the next four days, but since I know I can't do as good a job as Marcel did with his wonderfully detailed posts, I'll try to cut this down to some of my most treasured moments that will come to mind Singing with Leslie around the piano. The jazzy piano voicings that Lahm used and provided so tirelessly made me hear new harmonies to Leslie's melody which was really exciting to me, since I rarely get a chance to sing with other woman let alone Joni music. (Leslie, you have a tremendously rich voice and I really liked our blend. Hope we can do it again.) Lori, another wonderful singer and person also joined us at times and delivered some stellar performances herself and when all our voices harmonized, it was heavenly! Singing Sarah songs with Paz. ( Michael, we've got to do more of that!!!) Getting to know Jimmy and Ed . What a treat!! The two of you are right up there with John's Belgian chocolate.;-) just wish I could have danced on that House of Blues dance floor a little bit longer. I was just gettin'' in the groove recalling my teenage spirit. Dinner at Giovanni's. What a delectable feast and company. And , I have never had such wonderful wines chosen by the gentleman sitting next to me, Mr. John Wine Tiel ... Oh I could drink a case of ...anything you like! Of course being a little "mousy" at Paz's house during David Lahm's rehearsal. What a remarkable musician he is! And listening to the sax player was .... well when he was playing, I was barely breathing! The puppy at Paz's house. He tapped into all my motherly instincts! A Big Boo Hoo when I had to leave. I was a crate away from taking him home with me if I could have. Seeing Kakki again! What a jewel. I am so glad we got to meet again. Staying up all night talking with Jim, Man of God. I can¹t wait to see the pics. Wally's candlelight moment -- feeling the preciousness of love and time -- experiencing being there as a divine blessing. I have Wally's candle on top of my computer as a constant reminder! Two hours of quiet in a cool air-conditioned room. Vielen Dank SEVEN hours of fantastic performances! It put the TNT tribute to shame. Everybody gave their best! No matter what and when. I have never seen so much talent in one night ever! AWESOME The smell of magnolias at the Plantation and a ride that could have lasted much longer ( especially if it would have been up to Jack). Dinner at Irene's with Kakki, Jim, Jack, and John. Their company plus the food and wine- An exquisite combination. Once again Vielen Dank My least favorite moment but a treasure never-the-less...saying goodbye. I wish my fingers could move faster across my keyboard. There is so much more to share. This little bit has taken me all day ... Okay, I did spend 12 hours renovating our kitchen, grouting tile etc.. since I started this post this morning. Let me tell you, reality has hit me hard. My only reprieve --- checking out the many wonderful posts on the list. Missing you all ...Claud9 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Jun 2000 23:23:33 -0700 From: Ken Corral Subject: The Treatment on KCRW: Mitchell & Geffen A couple of weeks back someone asked about "The Operator", the book on David Geffen by Tom King. King is, I guess doing a book tour and was on a local Southern CA.radio interview show called The Treatment hosted by Elvis Mitchell. Joni's name came up several times and there was a substantial JM segment about three quarters of the way through. Here is the brief bit of info given at KCRW's web site: Elvis Mitchell hosts author Tom King, a reporter at "The Wall Street Journal" since 1989, who has reported on the entertainment industry from the paper's Los Angeles bureau since 1991. His current book is "The Operator: David Geffen Builds, Buys and Sells the New Hollywood." Aired Friday June 2nd. - -AND- Here are some of the relevant portions of the interview: __________________________________ TOM KING: ...and at the same time I just couldn't help but want to listen to these other people who had never really been heard before. ELVIS MITCHELL: You didn't really get Joni Mitchell. She's the one interview you couldn't get. T K: Oh God! MAN did I want to talk to Joni Mitchell. I think she's probably been here in this studio talking about her music and it bums me out that I didn't get to meet her. Not only because I'm a huge fan of her music but because she's a central figure in David Geffen's life. You know, even though Joni Mitchell's albums were never blockbusters like the Eagles had... EM: ...but she's hugely influential. TK: ...Oh, my goodness!... EM: ...and "Free Man in Paris" is a great song. TK: ...and "Free Man in Paris" is a great song that she wrote while walking down Champs Elyses with Davis Geffen, ya know with Robbie Robertson and his wife Dominique...but nobody...I don't think there was any other artist that had a more direct impact on David Geffen's career than Joni Mitchell...I think he helped her as much as she helped him* *(note: He means "I think she helped him as much as he helped her" as he says in his book.) There were so many artist who looked and said Joni Mitchell wanted to be on Geffen's label. That was an incredible advertisement for him. EM: It seemed that to me..and especially after reading the book too, that Joni Mitchell and Laura Nyro were sort of the cornerstones of what made people take him seriously as a force in the music business and he truly loved them early on...what do you think sort of made him turn against them? TK: ...in the case of Joni Mitchell, ahem..oh man, I mean these two battled over everything. They each have a laundry list of betrayals that I'm sure to this day each of them can cite chapter and verse of and the fault, I think probably lies somewhere in the middle. EM: You really do?..because, again I wonder if its this thing where he falls in love with this thing and then some way when he can't have it anymore, he decides to try to destroy it...and that's happened in so many of the cases in the book that you detail. TK: Yeah it does...its just, its almost frightening, ya know what kind of a pattern this is. It happens over and over again...but you know, Joni Mitchell had legitimate gripes too. She was, ahem...In her moment of glory with "Court and Spark" coming out in February of 1974, you know the album that had that song "Free Man in Paris" on it and in that moment, she couldn't get David Geffen on the phone. He had dumped her like a hot potato and had moved on to Bob Dylan, who he'd successfully signed to Asylum. And he'd masterminded that famous reunion tour EM: The tour that was called "The Rolling Blunder Tour"... _________________________________________________ You can hear the entire program via Real Audio. Hi, I'm new to the list and am intrigued by the covers project. Are these compilations available for trade? I rummaged through my music collection and noted a few JM covers. I guess these may have appeared on the early volumes (is there a master list somewhere?), but just in case they have been overlooked, I will list them: BSN - Clannad, from "Switch" soundtrack That Song about the Midway - Bonnie Raitt Chelsea Morning - Neil Diamond Chelsea Morning - Fairport Convention I Don't Know Where I Stand - Barbra Streisand I Don't Know Where I Stand - Fairport Convention I Don't Know Where I Stand (Live for BBC) - Fairport Convention River - Janis Siegel and Fred Hersch Also, with the All-Star tribute, we now have 16 more covers. I was able to fit them all on one audio CD (64 min).
