I think the orchestra helped a lot, as they played the melody more clearly, but Joni was definitely into Hejira... she really rocked on it! I loved watching her intensity as she sang Hejira! (well, DUH!) here it is: (forgive any typos please...) "by 1973, joni mitchell was searching for a new sound. on albums like clouds and blue, she had accompanied herself on piano and acoustic guitar, and progressed from folkie waif to sophisticated chronicler of the gender wars. she needed musical arrangements that matched the complexity of her lyrics. tom scott had played woodwinds on mitchell's previous album, for the roses (1972) and she decided to do some sessions with his jazz-rock band, the LA express. the result is court and spark, an album that not only represents the culmination of mitchell's folk-rock period, but also signals the many musical experiments of her future. released at the end of 1973, raised on robbery, the album's first single, caught all the humor and energy that had always been part of mitchell's personality but that had barely found a place in her music. the second single, help me, showed the flip side of mitchell's sensibility - the romantic dreamer, swept up in the currents of desire and uncertain about where they are carrying her or even if she wants to go. "we love our lovin'/ but not like we love our freedom" she sings in lines that summarize the dueling impulses in so many of her songs. playing behind her, musicians like scott, guitarist larry carlton, drummer john guerin, and trumpeter chuck findley add colors and depth to songs that stretch melodies and vocal lines in surprising directions. and as always with mitchell, the lyrics penetrate deftly to the painful core of feeling beneath the requisitely cool coupling of the early seventies. when she sings, in a kind of prayer, "send me somebody/who's strong and somewhat sincere" her reduced expectations (this was the age of less is more, remember) seem both poignant and desperate. court and spark was - and still is - mitchell's most commercially successful album. in another sign of the times, she was defeated the following year in two major grammy categories by olivia newton john. that's why the criterion of "standing the test of time" was invented - a standard that court and spark will always meet." - anthony decurtis blue also gets 5 stars. for the roses, 4.5 stars. and hissing of summer lawns, 4 stars. joni sure is in the press alot lately, and it all seems to be very favorable. i hope she gets some satisfaction from it. peace! ric ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 17:16:34 -0500 From: "kerry" Subject: Chicago thoughts Is it me or are there a lot of posts on the list lately?? It's been hard to keep up! I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry that I missed all the Chicago pre and post get-togethers. As I said before it was rough getting my nieces and sister on the road on time and they had to go to work and school the next day. I went out to the smoking section at intermission and couldn't seem to see a group gathered. My niece said I should have yelled, "WHERE'S MY INTERNET COMMUNITY?" :>) Anyway, I did find Steve on the way out. (I noticed his "photo" badge.) At least I met one JMDL'er!!!! It's a start! So, when is the Chicago Jonifest???? As far as I know there are only two of us on the list from Milwaukee!! I loved the concert and don't have much to add that hasn't been said. Her new orchestrations of her "older" songs were wonderful and I felt challenged as a listener. It was a very emotional night for me, since I never thought I would get to see her again. Everyone else was respectable (under the threat of a Strawberry Hill cocktail). I just arrived in Washington, DC (stopping by Detroit to see how he was doing) for a ten day trip and have DED on repeat on the portable (and lousy) CD player in his honor. He asked me to channel up Ethiopia and I am trying. Could use some help here. Doesn't look like she's gonna show. On top of that, the driver that brought me to the hotel is Ethiopian and we had quite a little chat about Little Ms. JM. He bought DED for his local family to hear and mailed a tape back to Africa. Inspired yet again, it was my first choice (as usual) to play as I try to stay on top of my emails. Still have 97 and I checked them before I left Hollywood this AM! My DED brother (the one still in Detroit) and I exchange daily emails trying to top one another for who listened to it most that day. We have also analyzed each and every lyric and determined it to be JM's most fabulous creation, short of Dancin' Clown. We, of course, use different email names for this singular purpose. The bazouki adds this raw energy and unique > melodic sound. She has a fantastic alto voice and her version of this song > just kicked all our colective arses. Amen. I'm listening to her album "Hybrid Vigor" right now and it is unbelievable. (By the way, Mr. Paz is listed in the "Thanks to" comments). She looks like a cross between an elf and Christie Brinkley and calls her music "Irish-Bayou." I remember Lamadoo going up to her wide-eyed with mouth agape saying "You're a MONSTER" and she thanked him very much with a big smile. She was incredible on Hejira during Paz's set. Another totally unique and over the top talented artist. Mr. Dulson would love her very much, I think ;-) > Jason Marsalis Band Can't even begin to describe it and am glad Marcel was able to articulate it some. At this point some of us were fainting on the floor and had to be revived and propped up. > Kevin Danzig & Cat Whooley: The Priest/ Trouble Child This husband and wife team get big special merit from me. The Priest song has never been one of my favorites - until I experienced their performance of it. Lordy, Lordy, Lordy. > Leigh "Little Queenie" Harris: Dreamland/ Goodbye Pork Pie Hat/ Twisted > K.D. She suddenly appeared at my side, chatting me up and telling me that her friend Susan Cowsill wanted to buy the dress I was wearing. (I was tempted to offset the cost of my trip and would not have had a problem exchanging it for the slightly tattered Robin Hood dress Susan was wearing.;-) She told me she grew up in the Valley in L.A. and had a good friend named Kakki in high school. I had no idea who she was. She offhandedly said she "may do a few numbers later." Geezorino, did she ever! > David Lahm: Four Songs > I got to converse with David during the three days and meeting him was special. hard to beleive he is >actually part of our JMDL community. Frederick ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 23:39:54 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: Marcels take: Pazfest: Night of Nights part 3 Wow!!! Marcel, this post (or should I say THESE POSTS) get a 5-Star rating!! You saved me a lot of writing by saying it all. But I do have to add a couple of notes: Prior to this night, my most memorable concert was seeing REM in a small club in Raleigh when they were just starting out and calling themselves Rapid Eye Movement. But even then, they were on the road and someone else saw pretty much the same thing the next night. But THIS, THIS was a once-in-a-lifetime performance. Period. Not going on the road, not a tour, this will never be repeated. And it was ALL JONI. And I was there. Hot Damn. I loved looking out at the non-listers to see their reaction. Catgirl, you should have seen this lady's face light up when you broke into "Coyote", and it was especially superb with Eric/Jaco and David L. tickling the ivories. Thankfully I was sitting near to Kakki, because many times during this phenomenal night I was literally unable to catch a breath, and by looking at Kakki we'd exchange these jaw-dropping glances that would help me take in air. I am not making this up! I was originally going to do Blue Motel Room and Furry, but as Marian couldn't make it I didn't want to perform with anyone else. No offense, but when your heart is set on the Austrian Joni Wonder Woman, well, you know...anyway, while I was sad that Marian couldn't make it, I was delighted that my songs were turned over to the wonderful performer that did them. The blue guitar, the blue shoes, the blue dress, and two blue songs. Exquisite. (But can she improv on "Hit the Road Jack"...Humph!) :~) And Prevost & Salley were Tuck & Patti to the max. I bought their CD the next day and it is smokin'. (Luckily, the lady selling CD's at the Howlin' Wolf didn't take plastic, or this slut would have walked away with a bagful of music! Marcel did not exaggerate one iota. Each performer built on the previous one, and we didn't just hear the predictable hits, but rather the songs that meant the most to these performers, done in their own style. I pray daily for the recording of this show - it will be the crown jewel of my collection! OK, I'm in ramble mode now...go to bed Bob...g'night! PS: I've just heard the WORST Joni cover ever!! Thanks to Garrett, I am now the holder of Hole's "BSN" OMG! It is so bad the first time you hear it you have to go to the end in disbelief. It is then IMPOSSIBLE to play it all the way through again. Ahhh, another slice of cheese to add to the pile. As far as the covers go, Volume 3 is done, Volume 5 will get done this weekend, and maybe I have enough cheese to finish up Volume 6 when Jimmy's "Gomer Pyle" cover gets here. I'll keep y'all posted! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Jun 2000 23:44:43 EDT From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #230 In a message dated 6/2/00 9:30:14 PM US Central Standard Time, farneddy@mindspring.com writes: << Does anyone have "Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire" by Tim Curry, or :Ladies of the Canyon by Annie Lennox for the covers project, I find themon Napster, but they end kind of abruptly. >> The first is on Volume 1, the latter on Volume 2... but thanks for asking - and if you can find me Dave Stewart's "Amelia", you get a gold star! Really lonnnnng! Hello ListFam- Let me start by saying that I ain't EVER doing this agin. I have not posted due to severe brain and physical damage to my person, but I had a wonderful time in spite of myself and actually got to participate in alot of the singing and carrying on. It is high time I posted to dispel any of the rumours of my passing and to try and focus on thanking all of the people who supported my efforts in the tribute to my Queen and the fundraiser for the foundation. From the moment that I met Lori and Timo at the hotel for cocktails last week till today after a Japanese lunch with Leslie and Steve and dropped them at the airport, is an ERA I will never forget. There are so many special people on this list and every person that was here will hold a place in my heart forever. Thanks to everyone who brought me presents of music, food, beauty, and friendship. I guess the best part for me personally was having all of you in my home and all of the music that I was a part of or witnessed from the kitchen or whatever. Listening to Les Irvin and Steve Mixon playing acoustic in my studio was a highlight, and hearing David Lahm during rehearsals or leading a choir of the finest ladies on the planet at my piano. I caught my wife peeking around the corner to check out Leslie Mixon singing her heart out, with Lahm at the piano, and I loved the look of admiration and respect on Freda's face and (at last) understanding and appreciating what this (so called) PazFest was all about. The party Saturday was fab with several live musical events going on at the same time. And during this, my faithful companions of late, Jerry (the Roasted Corn King and Master of the Grill), Lori and Marcel in the kitchen cooking up wonderful food for the troops, Ed (the Cuban Hunk from Hell and general PITA) making cocktails at the bar, Jim (who is truly bulletproof) documenting all of the festivities from behind the lens, me bestest bud, Kakki (the best martini glass painter in the land and kindred spirit, and Claud9 ( another kindred SpiritOmine and a brilliant singer/songwriter) for helping being hostesses to all of my guests. To Chef Bruce Myers who catered and produced the Brunch at the Wolf and backstage food for the artists the night of the tribute, my eternal gratitude and love. My brother, Jack Neilson (also a brilliant singer/songwriter and one of my best friends in life) for being there for me and all of my touristing buds. To Damon and the Crew of WWOZ for the recording. My very special friend Kurt Coste for the video (which Kakki and I saw a few choice clips that looked fantastic). Eddie Pearce for Live sound (and so far the DATS he did suck ) {Thank Gawd I have 3 other back ups} Also special thanks to Jimmy who gives as good a hug as Ashara ever did, Steve P. (the VOICE) who lead us in song, Leslie Mixon for leading us in the most beautiful tribute for Wally and filling my house with song, Steve Mixon for being the great "picker" and jam-meister, Bob Muller (who is the king of impromptu lyrics) and knows how to get a guy pumped up, Catgirl and Eric for their endless enthusiasm and talent, Bern who is good friend for just Being There, (the lovely and talented) Victor, who is an endless multi-talented musician and good friend (and knows some great fucking songs), THE ENTIRE BRIAN THOMAS ENTOURAGE (Cindy, Matt, and Taylor) for the great music and spirit and for being such good sports, my crazy Uncle John for his endless support, encouragement, and knowledge (and the cheese cigars and chocolate), Phyliss (the human calculator) for helping me when I most needed it (cause I can't count), Les Irvin for being the inspiration for doing this in the first place. To Brothers Wally and Jim and Les for the legacy that is the jmdl/jonimitchell. com community and opening the door for me to make so many TRUE friends AND having more fun than I can even describe. To my wife Freda (who was the best sport of all) for her support and tolerance of my musical "jones". And last, but certainly not least, to Joni Mitchell, for the music that is the soundtrack of my life. After the evening show I had the strangest feeling of being SO FULL and yet it was like my feet were colanders where everything drained out over the next few days. I am just today starting to get my strength back. I guess it's time to start snorting a little Geritol before during and after these events. Believe it or not I got to witness about 85% of the show without interruption and got to soak in every single amazing performance that came one after the other. Someone ought to call TNT and let them know that big names is not all it takes to make a great tribute. I was blessed to have so many people that gave all their hearts and soul to us that evening and it was as good for me as seeing Joni live herownself. (Without reviewing the tapes or video yet) My eternal love and gratitude to the following artists who performed at the tribute show. I really feel like it could have been better in alot of ways and alot of the people that were suppose to play couldn't and my heart is broken for a very special friend that was "the girl who couldn't ...." (you know like Joni at Woodstock). I am extremely proud nonetheless of what I was able to achieve and if 5 or 6 of you agree to move to New Orleans I might consider...(Michael! ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR F***ING MIND???? Well, YES!) I am thankful for all the praise and everything, but you have to remember that this was a collaborative effort and the musicians that I had to work with are truly amazing. You must know that just mentioning the name Joni Mitchell to the local artists was all I needed to do to get them to come play. There was so many more that I just dropped the ball on and so many more that just couldn't make it do to many different reasons. To all of you who came, your house will always be where mine is, and I expect to see you all again (JoniFest or Not) (New Orleans or Honduras). I have not had a chance to catch up with the digests, but I did sneak a peak at some of the current ones to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I thank everyone for the kind words of praise and encouragement. As far as the tapes go, it is TBA on an official "release" and I will start checking the tapes out next week. Let's keep the Joni2000NewOrleans list going for your ideas and support of the continuation of this project and of course I am open to the entire list for ideas for the CD, etc. I am bursting again with emotion and feeling overwhelmed, so I will say good night to all and PLAY NICE! Love Michael P.S. Kakki- I would like to publically say I am sorry for biting you (on the leg). I wanted to give you a tour of the swamp vampire style and when I went to bite your neck, I missed it by a mile. Sorry! ;-} P.S.S.
