Since so many are telling Jim they don't want to hear any history from his perspective, a reading of some of the posts from the digest archive may be in order. Les, are the posts in the archive as they originally appeared? Or have some been deleted / edited? Here's another thing to consider. Do any of us know what Jim was dealing with off-list? I'm in no way condoning his statement, but appearances can be very deceiving. I'll share a true example out of my personal JMDL experience. This past Christmas I was mentioned in a list post of lovely sentiment, but it was sandwiched between posts by the same person, the list didn't see. The post prior to the lovely list post bounced from list view, the ones after were private conversation trying to find common ground with this other lister. Well, what I was receiving were a barrage of antagonistic statements and insults including, but not limited to, likening me to the KKK for my Christian faith. If that weren't shitty enough, that lister also threatened to post select snips of private conversation if I challanged him on-list. Now, add to the mix that that manipulative lister also posts in nearly every thread on the JMDL. A good deal of self-control was required to NOT lash out. I'm not crying "poor me", but this is the reason I seldom share anything other than Joni information or articles on-list anymore. (What would have happened if I had lashed out without you guys seeing what was going on behind the scenes? I'd probably be painted the villian.) Not saying Jim experienced the same as I did, but we, the list proper, and especially the newbies, probably don't see the whole picture. And remember, even strong people, the ones that don't make a practice of crying "hurt and offense", either can be pushed to the edge or have weak moments. It was too bad that ALL JMDLers couldn't be there because I thought about all of you- are you listening, simon, Colin, & JulZie? There were lots of photos shot during the weekend by lots of people. I shot 8 rolls of 24 exposures each. I'm in the middle of moving but I promised to get web-ready photos to Les as soon as possible. Believe me, I can not wait to get all of this stuff back so I can start editing, scanning, & resizing! If I promised photos to you, please send me a reminder as I was without a pen for part of the weekend but I promise to take care of each person. Crawfish and shrimp forever! Hi to all. I haven't the courage at the moment to write a post regarding Joni's appearance tonight at the Rosemont Theatre here in Chicago. So much has been said so eloquently I would feel inadequate by comparison. Perhaps curage will come to me in a day or so. Or cheat sheets. Suffice it to say, she was as wonderful as described. There was an empty seat for a certain you know who you are. Sorry it didn't work out. I am now officially unburdened from hating Bob Muller for his awesome, awesome Joni pic. (Not that I ever did. --save for he and Joni being so damned attractive...) I had my very own Muller moment! After Joni finished 'A Case of You', the audience was a little slow in pulling itself into a standing ovation. I for one thought, "Screw that!" and I was on my feet and raving like a lunatic. She turned and looked me straight in the eyes, smiled, and mouthed "thank you." !!!!!!!!! That will always be one of the most treasured moments in my life: for all of 3 seconds, I was real to Joni Mitchell. I was real to Joni Mitchell!!! Pizza with the listers was a great deal of fun. Very nice to meet everyone. Let see, there was the Rev. Mr. Vince himself. Doug, Jodi, Coyote, Micheal, --why did I start this? I know I will forget to mention someone's name, even though you faces, kindness, and positive karma are all still with me. Now the gig is up and everyone knows that 'Rich' is the cute one with all the social graces... A note to Steve and Jon. Did either of you leave something behind at the after concert gathering? If so, email me privately and describe what you lost. (Security reasons.) I will be happy to mail it to you toute suite. Thanks to everyone involved in meeting before the show. I hope I still don't owe anyone for pizza! John Calimee ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 20:47:15 +1200 From: "Helen M. She was fairly complimentary - except for pointing out the "damage" smoking has done to Joni's voice - but it appears that this is a "new" CD here! Only 4 months behind the US - pretty good! OK, enough sarcasm! But maybe that's why my friend got blank stares when he asked about it in the stores! And as for the Nawlins Jonifest, I've just looked at the JMDL website, and there's nothing there yet! What's the story? You've all had at LEAST a day to get home, write down the entire calendar of events in great detail, and get all the photos developed, scanned, etc. and sent to Les for inclusion in the site. Stop mucking around, and get on with it! I'm dying here! Seriously, I can't wait to see/hear about everyone's weekend - the few snippets we've had so far have just wet the appetite for more! Lordy me. The magic was unending for five straight days. Most of us got no more than 3 hours of sleep each night - we just never wanted a break in it all. We will all be pinching ourselves for a long time over this incredible experience. I don't know how the hell Paz pulled it all off. I can't even begin to list all he gave to us all over the course of the Fest. He truly is one of our Joni list angels. There are so many moments that were memorable. We had a pretty good-sized group starting Thursday and our wonderful driver Jack took us all around town to the coffeehouses where Victor was performing and then off to a big midnight dinner at which we started right in on making music round the table(although it was so late our audience was mostly the restaurant staff ;-) Singing Joni, CSN, James Taylor and even Creedence Clearwater, for heaven's sake, at the top of our lungs in 12 part harmony. Victor (another very magical human being in his own right) surprised us by pulling a small cello and flute out of his hat in addition to his guitar. Then the first of the five nights partying till dawn. Friday night most of the group had arrived and we had a private room for a dinner at one of the most exquisite restaurants in town. Afterward we received an invitation to bring the whole gang to the private Foundation Room club at the House of Blues. David Lahm took to the piano there with Victor on the small cello as we sipped our fancy drinks and smoked our gourmet cigars courtesy of Mr. Van Tiel (or our beloved Uncle John as we now call him ;-) I had the best wake-up call of my life Saturday morning around 9 a.m. suddenly hearing an awesome live jazz band playing in Paz's living room! It was Lahm and local musicians rehearsing for Sunday's show. After they finished Leslie Mixon and Lori stopped by and along with Claud and I, we sang several Joni songs accompanied by Lahm on the Grand piano for awhile. By afternoon all of the group had arrived at Chez Paz and we settled into martinis, European chocolates and other various libations and watched Phyliss's video of the L.A. show and listened to bits of the Concord and L.A. shows thanks to simon, Jim and Catherine. Then after a dinner that included what seemed like several thousand shrimps and crawfish, the live music began and did not end until 5 a.m. Mr. Lahm still going strong non-stop on the piano accompained by many beautiful voices, including Leslie, Catgirl, Lori and Claud. Simultaneously, outside on the patio, Marcel, Eric, and Steve were playing almost every song we've ever loved for hours accompanied by many other sweet voices. Oh and I must say Mr. Muller has a GREAT voice and knows every single word to every song ever written! Another benefit gained from being a "music slut" ;-) I went back and forth between the two "venues" trying to catch it all. Thanks especially to Lahm and Eric for being such champs and keeping the music going all night. It was wonderful to hear from Marian. We passed the phone around for awhile so she could hear snippets. A constant refrain all weekend was how much we missed her being there with us. Sunday started out with a catered brunch for us at the Howlin Wolf and rehearsal for the jimdles who would be performing later. Marcel is truly the incarnation of Stephen Stills. The actual concert started at 7 p.m. and went until past 3 a.m. I don't think any of us there will ever be able to adequately describe the music we experienced. I have never seen anything like it. Every single musician seemed to give the performance of their lives. Each one showed an overwhelming love and respect for Joni's music. I've never seen such performances come straight out of the heart and soul and bones. We all thought we were hallucinating the entire night all, it was so magical. Early on we started out with "wows", then went into gasps and "ohmygods" and finally succumbed to repeating over and over again "un-f***ingbelievable!!" It is absolutely no exaggeration to say this was 100 times better than any tribute to Joni Mitchell ever. The jimdles performing were just amazing - Victor, Claud, Marcel, Paz, Steve Polifka, Catgirl, Lahm, Bryan Thomas and band and they all showed incredible stage presence. I felt such pride in them. I noticed many in the audience was gasping at their performances The pro-musician line-up included many of the very top artists in Louisiana and the South. All playing incredibly real good for free. It was all astounding and we will never be able to relate it adequately with mere words. I just pray that there is a way to officially release the recording and video so everyone can see it for themselves. (If we do have any lawyers in the house here, it would be wonderful if they could volunteer a little pro bono work for a good cause). There is so much more to tell, but I would be here all night to tell it all. Thanks to all those who were there to share and make it such a wonderful weekend. I was so happy to finally meet Jimmy (a darling, sparkling soul), Steve Polifka (a huggy bear and stupendous performer), Jerry Notaro (a ton of fun and a hunk to boot ;-), Lori Reason (who has the rare ability to be both classy and rowdy fun at the same time and who should show off her beautiful voice more), Victor (sooo talented and kind), Lahm (an amazing person and artist who has enriched us all) and Marcel (who had me in stitches constantly). It was wonderful to see Bern, Bob, Catgirl, Eric, Les, Jim, Claud, Bryan Thomas (who has both a new look and new sound that had me way over the moon) Pearl and Uncle John again. And it was wonderful to finally have more of a California representation at a Fest with Leslie, Steve Mixon and Phyliss who brought so much to the party. And to repeat our collective cheer of the weekend one more time "PAZ, YOU ROCK!!!!!!" In her recent area concert appearances, Joni Mitchell has nimbly, and dramatically, resisted typecasting. At a Benefit appearance at the opening of the Old Town Scool's new digs, she performed a brief, cathartic, solo set that focused on material from her last studio effort, the angry "Taming the Tiger," and demonstrated her considerable skills as a guitarist. A few months later, at a stadium date with Bob Dylan, she reverted to the jazz-rock trappings of her late '70's work and performed a generous, hit-heavy show. At her Tuesday show at the Rosemont Theater, Mitchell played the diva role to the hilt, wearing designer gowns, fronting a full orchestra, and mostly concentrating on the jazz standards she covered on her newest release, "Both Sides Now." Mitchell, sans her trademark open=tuned guitar, seemed at ease, and even playful, serving as vocalist in front of the orchestra, which was augmented by a small group of musicians touring with the singer, including consumate jazz drummer Peter Erskine and the blue tones of trumpeter Wallace Roney. The concert opened with a swirling instrumental rendition of Debussy's "Nuages" ("Clouds"). The bulk of the show that followed consisted of songs from the new disc. Years of smoking have deepened and flavored Mitchell's once-lilting voice, and she has used her study of the standards to reinvent her phrasing as well as her register. Where the Mitchell of youre would race through her lyrics, she now lingers over a tune like "You're My Thrill," savoring its verbal and melodic nuances like fine wine. Also, whereas Mitchell was previously rendered relatively immobile by her instrument, she has taken to her role as a front person readily, developing an almost cinematic flair for the dramatic. Mitchell capped off the standards set with her own signature piece, "Both Sides Now," the once-wistful song now imbued with overtones of regret and the world-weariness that suit its newly slowed tempo. DTShe remainder of the show was given over to orchestral arangements of Mitchell's own songs. Rather than choosing her most familiar material, mitchell focused on some of her most obscure, notably a stunning version of "The Judgement of the Moon and Stars" and a playful, winging romp through "Be Cool." Midway through the second set, Larry Klein, Mitchell's ex-husband, producer, and musical director for the new disc and tour, strapped on his electric bass and joined in on a dense, choppy rendition of "Hejira." All in all, Mitchell seems to be revelling in her role as chanteuse. At Tuesday's show, she displayed an ease and enthusiam that have not been common in her recent appearances. Joni Mitchell has reinvented herself one more time, embracing her maturity. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 May 2000 15:09:02 +0100 From: catman Subject: Re: No Subject Now the rest of you know for sure i wasn't fibbing! I've been on this list for maybe a year now, and noticed that a lot of Jim's recent posts (on this subject) don't sound like the "regular" Jim at all, suggesting he may be going through a rough patch and while, like Penny, I don't necessarily condone some of his reactions, I can certainly understand them, and I think it should be viewed in the larger context of his other "regular-Jim" posts. I went back and re-read the one that (I think? at this point I'm not sure!) started this and even after re-reading it, couldn't find anything offensive in it, but maybe i'm too thick-skinned or thick-headed to pick up on it ;) In fact, I was touched and impressed by some of Jim's comments on Joni's music and how it affected him, but never got around to responding to him with this because I was too far behind on my e-mails at that time and by the time I had slogged though the quagmire, WWIII had apparently happened. I feel like an unwilling participant in a battle at the inlaws' house where you're supposed to pick a side and I'm not going to play that game! (Nyah-nyah!) You all seem to be nice people here and everyone has something to contribute. People who have been here a while and have seen the same threads recurring need to recognize that there are a lot of newbies who may not have been around the first time it was discussed and that, even if the issue does come up again ... so what? A new person - whether they're old Joni-fans but new to the list, or brand-new Joni-fans - can bring fresh perspective. OK, I've been a Joni-fan for over 30 years but I didn't diligently study her life and her every move; I don't necessarily know all the words to all her songs, nor the names and stories of her lovers over the years; I've seen her in concert only twice and the last time was probably about 15 years ago; I don't collect autographs or other memorabilia (just music!) We're all different as witness the least-favourite Joni-songs contributions - what one absolutely hates, another may really love and vice versa. We are united in our love of this woman's music and (God, I'm gonna sound like one of those aging hippies! Moi?) oh dammit, we're all nice people. Peace, love and all that stuff. ===== Catherine (in Toronto) catrin_of_aragon@yahoo.ca _______________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Phillips" Subject: Heijera and Joni sings Mitchell:) Hey, I listened to in the first time in ages Joni's wonderful 1976 album, Heijera. It was so refreshing to listen to that album because I haven't listened to it in a long time. To me, those songs tell a story. Obviously, it isn't the confessional style of the Blue era, but it is more of story telling style. I especially loved Jaco's (whatever his last name is) bass work. It complemented Joni's guitar style immensly, in my humble opinion. If you have not listened to this album in a while, you owe it to yourself to do so. I started out listening to the album, you know, maybe once a day. But that wasn't enough. In a couple of months, I was up to listening twice a day -- then three, then four. I told myself it wasn't a big deal, I could handle it. I still had my Rolling Stones and Beatles albums out, and if they were gathering a little dust, I figured that was just summer in the Midwest. I guess it first occured to me that I might have a problem when I was shopping with my wife, and passed by some shoe shop in the mall and spontaneously blurted out at the top of my lungs "And the click of high-heeled shoes!". Then I broke into a cold sweat, ghosts of the darktown society came right out of the bricks at me, saying "What a strange, strange boy" ... I knew this was no false alarm. So I bolted for record store at the opposite end of the mall. I had to hear it ... had to hear it right then and there. I ran ragged through the racks, tossing aside other CDs like sheaves of whisper wheat, ripped off the shrinkwrap and demanded to hear it at the listening booth. Somehow the music soothed me that time, but it was not to last. I guess I saw the signs, but I ignored them. I bought blank tapes in 25-packs -- dozens of them -- recorded 'Hejira' on every one -- the idea of being anywhere, anytime without the sweet music filled me with apprehension, loathing and horror. Once a friend of mine at work (when I could work) went to lunch and he asked if I had a tape as we drove. Well sure I did -- plenty of them. "These are all the same Joni Mitchell album", he said. I shrugged it off, saying I was delivering them to my big band -- since we were learning an arrangement of the title cut -- I guess that seems pretty ironic now, doesn't it? Well anyway, thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Don Rowe ===== "I do not object to others hiding from history. The Uchida recording underlined SACD's sonic superiority over CD. The surround recordings were of two types: one striving for as natural an acoustic representation as possible, the other less subtle because of using spatial effects. A fine example of the former was Both Sides Now, a new Joni Mitchell recording (analog master mixed to 5.1, then converted to DSD), which has been released on SACD, CD, and LP (and which was Stereophile's Recording of the Month for April). When we listened to A Case of You, Mitchell's voice was projected rather forward, which caused me to leave my seat and stand behind the last row of chairs. From there, the result was quite impressive - goosebump stuff, to be honest. The sound stage was enormous, a somewhat cinema-like experience. He walks in with his diamond rings, plain-clothes cops greeting him ready to make a bust if they can. Edith is clearly his favorite girl, which makes the other prostitutes jealous (Edith in the ring, the passed-over girls conferring). So they tell her all the stories of what he's been doing behind her back (she says, his crime belongs). And of course, "Women he has taken grow old too soon. He tips their tired faces gently to the spoon." Those women have been ridden hard and put away wet... no wonder they've aged prematurely after a life of prostitution and hard drugs. My interpretation... My three favorite musical phrases are the very ones you discussed: "Diving, diving, diving, diving" "I took a ferry to a highway, then I drove to a pontoon plane. I took a plane to a taxi, and a taxi to a train. I've been travelin so long, how'm I ever gonna know my home when I see it again?" I could listen to that song over and over. Oh, and I also have to say that I love "Blue Motel Room." I think it, along with "Edith in the Kingpin," really showcases Joni's ability to write songs that are pure jazz and blues. Blue Motel Room would certainly be at home in any jazz standards book from the 30s or 40s. And I love how she refers to Los Angeles as "LA Town," much like "Londontown" is used in standards. I think the lyrics in that song are great. I do have one question: What does it mean that she knows he has all those pretty girls hanging on his boom-boom pachyderm? Finally, I am just getting around to responding to the comment that "Conversation" from LOTC is "naive"! No way! I have felt that way so many times in my life--I think that song speaks volumes about what it's like to have a crush on someone who's "taken," someone whom you're just POSITIVE you could make happy!
