I'm a slut and I loved it all, but I thought her version of "Both Sides Now" was utterly transcendent. Also worth noting is that Joni talked about political stuff, sort of: She talked about the importance of songwriters keeping publishing rights for themselves, and she mentioned Don Henley's work (and here I'm writing about something that I know nothing about; it seems to me that she mentioned him for his work in support of writers and artists versus record labels. Maybe somebody who knows the issues can expand a bit?) I thought the turnout was terrific, BTW -- if Merriweather Post wasn't sold out, it was certainly close (at least in terms of seating in the pavilion; I don't know how big the crowd on the lawn was). I'm ready to do it again tomorrow and every other night of my life. And Joni seemed really, really happy, as though performing is as entertaining for her as it is for us. How nice to see her so in command, and so happy. BTW, despite best intentions, Jane and I didn't connect with any other JMDL folks tonight. It's one of the few disappointments of the evening, but I'm sure we'll be getting together some time soon. - ----------------- So when you see a man who's broken / Pick him up and carry him. And when you see a woman who's broken / Put her all into your arms 'Cause we don't know where we come from / We don't know what we are. I love this album, I always have. I have kind of scratched my head when I've read over the years that other people don't like it. I think it is absolutely singable--which is an important criterion for me. The last song, Love, with Joni's twist on Corinthians 11 is one of my absolutely favorite Joni songs. Amazingly well sung--it goes through me every time. I have always wanted to hear this song a capella--just strip off the background and to hear her in incredible voice. Her melody to this is unbelievable, her phrasing, her emotion. It makes the album. If you haven't heard this song in a while, go back and listen to it. Again and again. One of the joys of the universe. And thank the universe for the person who wrote those incredible words originally. "Love suffers long, love is kind! Enduring all things, hoping all things, Love has no evil in mind." And how about Chinese Cafe--brilliant, wonderful storytelling. In some ways, it reminds me now of Song for Sharon (another of my favorite Joni songs with one of my favorite opening lines--"I went to Staten Island, Sharon, to buy myself a mandolin and I saw the long white dress of love on a storefront mannequin" the beginning of a song of exquisite lyrics.) There are fun songs like Be Cool (can't wait to hear what an orchestra is going to do with this) and Baby, I Don't Care and little rockers like the title song. Moon at the Window? Excellent, in that little jazzy styling. At least the thieves let that behind. The idea of Dreaming Flat Tires to signify a dying love is brilliant. (Am I using this word too much?) If there is anything negative to say it's my usual complaint of using too much overdubbing of herself. And Solid Love? Well, no one's perfect. I will admit that WTRF is no Hejira (what is?) but it is full of fine surprises in both music and lyrics. Howard M It takes cheerful resignation, heart and humility, that's all it takes. NP: Moon at the Window (which I called Moon in the Window the other day in a post and, thankfully, no one pointed it out) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 01:54:20 -0500 From: Howard Motyl Subject: Review in the Village Voice now this is the kind of review I hate. How can a well-respected "alternative" paper have a reviewer who thinks the last time this woman had anything to say was way back when. Has he not heard Turbulent Indigo, TTT, or even Chalkmark? The rest of the review is laughable but this part about something to say is ludicrous.
