Hi all... Just to reaquaint myself with everyone, my name is Chris Cochran, and I'm writing from Birmingham, AL. I'm an English teacher, and am 23. I have been a member on here for about a year, and have posted a few times. I'm mostly a lurker in the shadows, though. I saw Joni last week in Atlanta, and it was wonderful, as everyone had said. I was spellbound the entire time. My favorite moment was "Ludwig's Tune." You guys are going to flip when you hear it (if you haven't gotten the chance yet). I guess because most of BSN is so slow and deliberate, I was expecting something like that. But this an epic...it really moves. And Joni sounded great on it. The reason I am posting is to mention a new topic that you all might want to discuss. Ever since I heard that Joni is doing her next album by recording her own work with an orchestra, I've been wondering what songs she'll choose. So I wanted to ask you all....what are the songs that you would choose? Which songs do you think would work well, and which songs would you like to hear? Some of my choices.... The Last Time I Saw Richard. For some reason, this was one of my first choices. I think she could slow it down a little, add the drums (like on MOA), and let the strings carry the song. Blue. I'm picturing something very drawn out, and slowed down, like BSN. See You Sometime. I guess it's because I just heard her new arrangement of For The Roses. I was surprised at how wonderful it sounded like that. I think that could work with this song. Shades Of Scarlett Conquering. She'd have to do some material from HOSL (my favorite cd). Either this one, or The Boho Dance. Down To You. Don't you think this is a natural choice? And before you wrote your harangue, you should have read all the posts of the thread. This has already been settled among the people involved and you are just stirring up old bile. I am trying very hard to remain calm in this reply. I could be calling you all kinds of name but I am not going to. I am going to talk to you like a rational adult. First of all, how dare you presume that I don't love Joni Mitchell and all that that means. The discussion you refer to had nothing to do with love (or hate) for Joni and her music and her art. From that discussion, which was lengthy and sometimes tedious, I do not know how you could derived that I don't like Joni Mitchell. I don't think she is perfect and I know that a lot of us on this list don't think she is. But we don't presume anyone is, including ourselves. I think she is a genius and, if you had actually read all of the posts on this discussion, you would have read those exact words. Her music and her words have been a major part of my life since I first heard her. So, don't presume that because I defended the right for other people to post negative reviews that I don't like Joni Mitchell. And don't presume that people who write negative reviews or make negative comments don't like Joni Mitchell. Jim and Kakki wouldn't, I think I can safely say. Finally, this is the "Joni Mitchell discussion list". It isn't the "Only for People Who have Great things to say about Joni Mitchell discussion list". Les will tell you that, Kakki will tell you that, and Jim will tell you that. As will probably every other person on this list. I think we all know that not everyone on the list is going to think alike and that occassionally, we are not going to agree and that, lo and behold, someone will hate Mingus (to kick that dead horse one more time) and someone else will love it. Maybe a discussion will ensue where people will learn things from each other--maybe their opinions won't change--but maybe each will hear the album a little differently the next time. That's what a discussion is about. Especially on the internet. We have to put up with people who may not have the same opinions that we have. What you have to remember is: No one is right, no one is wrong, it's just a matter of opinion. I am glad you have the forum to express your opinion and, crazy, it is the same forum where I can express mine. I love Joni Mitchell and her music, words and art probably as much as you do--but apparently we love them in very different ways. I allow your voice to be heard; I expect the same courtesy from you. The Wolf That Lives In Lyndsey. what is it about this song?? i have only listened to it twice, and cannot stand it. i listened to it on my discman and it didn't impress me. it just didn't sit well with me. anyway, on another note. i finally got For the Roses (thanks to Ms Kakki for telling us how truly amazing it is!) and today it was the first CD that i listened to on my new discman . the old one came to an untimely end after i dropped it down the stairs! Back in slc from a fabulous time in the big apple...so a few thoughts and thanks, etc. We had a great time at Judy's Chelsea before the show, even though i was terribly late and got much ribbing from the folks who thought i would be there at 5:00..I am so sorry! these things will happen, but what can you do when your mom reaallly needs a nap before the show? ha ha. she took new york like a champ (but got very tired!). so i am very grateful for the time i did get to spend with other listers and friends of listers. what a fantastic group of people! thanks to david lahm for suggesting the place (still haven't had a chance to listen to my new "jazz takes on" cd, but if it's anything like his live stuff i know i won't be dissapointed!), and kenny, brian (nice stack, brian!) emily (who's boyfriend courtney was baffled that we had heard so much about him!), preet from spain, jill (i touched her! i touched her!) and every other lovely person with whom i got to converse. it was really great, and made the concert and experience that much more special. as for the concert itself...what can I say that hasn't already been said? my mom and i cried though nearly the whole thing. i think the people around us thought we were seriously troubled...haha. it was one of the best nights of my life, and i am especially happy that i got to share it with my mom and so many great other folks. i hope i don't have to wait another 28 years for it to happen again. thanks to everyone, again. take care, alison e. in slc. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 May 2000 22:05:43 EDT From: Bern44105@aol.com Subject: Least favorite Joni songs I find much of the _Clouds_ album a tad precious, especially lyrically. I have been reading Robert Christgau's "Consumer Report" in the Village Voice for years, and I can't tell you the number of times I've finished the review thinking, "I have no idea what the record sounds like, I have no idea if he liked the record, and I have no idea what the point was of all that self-indulgent rambling." I began reading his review of BSN and threw my hands up in frustration. I have little respect for critics who are more enamoured by their own cleverness than interested in offering a lucid review. "Propaganda, piss on 'em." 2. There's not a single Joni track I'll "program out" (there's a phrase we couldn't use a few years ago) when I put on a CD, but I do get a good giggle out of the silliness of "Conversation" and "Roses Blue" both of which I think are so precious and naive, they're funny. (That said, it's sad to hear Joni dis so much of her early stuff for being naive, when even the Early Early stuff shows an extraordinary maturity.) 3. In defense of "Dancin' Clown," don't forget that Joni reeled off yet another astonishing, original figure of speech in those lyrics, the like of which you'll never hear another human being repeat in your lifetime: "you're a push button window! ... I can run you up and down!" 4. In defense of "The Tea Leaf Prophesy" (okay, this is a boy whose first JM record was CMIARS), and returning somewhat to an earlier thread about "measuring your life in Joni lyrics", there are two lines from that song that are woven indelibly into my life's fabric, and come up again and again as the seasons go round and round: "Summer's just a sneeze in a long, long, bad winter cold" and "oh, what does it matter? The wash needs ironing, and the fire needs stoking." 5. Not that it's required at the moment, but if asked, The Nickel Chief will stand up and defend every note on Don Juan's Reckless Daughter to the death. 6. And that includes the "bok-bok-bok" chicken imitation. California The guy in the hot seat used his 50/50 which left "Central Park" and "Paradise" as the possible answers. He still did not know the answer so he used his phone a friend lifeline to call his sister who also did not know the answer!!! I was absolutely dying! He finally guessed "Central Park" and quickly lost and walked away with only $1000.00 instead of $16,000.00 he was playing for. The lyrics pages show a single copyright but the arrangements pages show all of these songs re-copyrighted to Siquomb Publishing in 1969. Does anyone know how all these publishing companies work? Joni seems to have several going at the same time. Is there a reason why she would want to keep her songs separated in this way? Just back from tonight's show, and it was amazing, in every way. The orchestra, composed of many Military band and National Symphony players, was fantastic, didn't sound un-rehearshed at all. Joni seemed to be in a great mood, really enjoying the gig, and Peter Erskine just proves that he's the consumate tasteful drummer in whatever setting he's employed. Judging from some of the posts about earlier shows in the tour, Joni seems to be getting more comfortable with the material and forum, she was majestic, and is starting to really get inside these tunes......more later. My name is Mindy, and I recently joined this list in search of like-minded people who agree at least slightly with my conviction that Joni is an absolute miracle. I was deeply blessed to see her perform at the Greek in L.A. on the 12th. What strikes me most in retrospect, even though I was waaaay up high---which I didn't complain about too much, because of the view from up there of the stars and trees---her every little motion was completely noticeable. The look she gave the "Russian on Prozac" while singing Hejira...the flicking of the cigarette, the constant pushing up of sleeves. I could practically see every nuance on her face, she had that much PRESENCE. What are my least favorite Joni songs? What a funny way to start my relationship with you people. :) My least favorites are "The Jungle Line"---cough, cough, choke---although I can see its purpose in context. I inevitably skip over it though. It only interrupts an otherwise magnificent piece of work, in my opinion. Another one I always skip is Roses Blue from Clouds...the album, while now not one of my favorites, was the first Joni album I found and has much nostalgic value for me...but that song always annoyed me all too much...I appreciate the subject matter but the references seem uneducated and naive. Ooh, I never thought I'd be publicly saying that about Joni. But to jump into the new thread, Joni, PLEASE arrange Peoples' Parties/Same Situation and Harry's House...that would make me happy. And Passion Play. And Job's Sad Song. Whew, those last two would be outrageously cool with an orchestra. Much love to all.
