The orchestrated version of "Hejira" made it ALL worthwhile. I was nothing short of blown away by it. I am REALLY hoping that it ends up on her next album!! Joni was funny! Someone asked her to get her guitar, and she responded that she had left her instruments behind and was just singing this time. "I bought a bra and burned my guitar," she said! :) She also told funny stories about Chuck and her last visit to the Miami area (1965). The two of them got into a tiff at their gig, so she decided to walk back to their hotel and ended up in a black neighborhood. When she walked by, in gold shoes and gold tights and a gold minidress and with long gold hair, the boisterous area grew very quiet, and she heard a black man's voice on a balcony saying "Let it go by....Just let it go by." There were no programs at this show, unfortunately. I had hoped to grab a bunch and send them to our British friends on the list! Concorde concert info mark, what a wonderful, passionate response to the concord concert and to your experiences with the san francisco folks. i just melted. i'm sick with excitement for my joni concert, eight days from tonight in connecticutt with several happy second row jmdlers. i'm keeping most of these wonderful tour reports, but this one is going to be a especially treasured longtime favorite. thank you so much. patrick np - dawn upshaw - autumn in new york which means i must mention my excitement about hearing dawn upshaw tomorrow night in a staged performance of popular songs by sondheim, rodgers and hart, gershwin and vernon duke, tomorrow night, in a nice tiny theater. eighth row on that. different thrill, but a thrill nonetheless. >But this concert was such an >incredible experience for me that I have to share a few of my >impressions. > >Siquomb, she is indeed. > >Mark in Seattle > ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 May 2000 00:09:26 EDT From: AngelinoCoyote@aol.com Subject: Re: Joni's Concert in Florida In a message dated 05/18/2000 5:52:19 PM Pacific Daylight Time, FMYFL@aol.com writes: << I do want to add that it was a pleasure to finally meet fellow JMDLer Jerry Notaro and new lister "Boston Jim" Leonard. That could have been wonderful, but my expectations of her dedication would have wilted. I was wondering if you had any comments about her wardrobe? Did she have the crinkly thing cleaned and wore it again in Florida? The post below is taken from another list I'm on - written by Larry Dunl, who played piano for Joni in Concord. I thought this would be of interest. - Scott << I just thought I would relate an interresting and amusing experience I had in connection with Joni Mitchell's performance in Concord last Saturday. I was employed to play piano for the concert, including a six hour rehearsal in the afternoon of the same day. The arrangments feature piano solos on two songs and a few incidental piano parts. I was ready and prepared to play the concert, very much looking forward to the experience. About a half hour after the rehearsal began (I had not played yet) I was informed that Herbie Hancock had showed up at the last minute and would be playing the concert. Being it was Herbie Hancock, I couldn't be too upset, although I was pretty disappointed. I was told they would still want me to play piano on one selection, "At Last". So I stayed for the rehearsal and the show and played literally two notes, a D and an A. I did play the two notes several times. The arrangments by Vince Mendoza were some of the finest contemporary popular music orchestral arrangments I have heard. I loved being so close to the music. I wish I had been more a part of it. Joni Mitchell did a commendable job, but my feeling is the orchestra very much overwhelms her. She has long been someone I admire, primarily for her original songs and musical sensibilities. Her singing is not what it once was, but in my opinion she still conveys a great deal of feeling. P.S. Glad to see Steven Winn's review of Bobbe Norris and myself at The Plush Room this week is already on songbirds. You guys are on top of it, I must say. First off, I have never gotten the tape trees just because it gets too confusing to try to find 110 min. tapes and figure out how to get U.S. postage for the return envelope, etc., and since I have ADSL, I can download an MP3 in 2 mins. And as for copyright, I don't get what the hell the difference is if it is taped or stored on my computer as an MP3. So anyway, that's my 2 cents. I don't remember) and finish current download?" So, when that download finishes, it automatically disconnects. Anyway, those of us with cable or DSL could easily do this for others who are downloading... but whatever, it doesn't look like it is going to fly anyway -- but I gotta say, I love Napster -- there, throw red paint at me or whatever for depriving Samantha Sang of the royalty she lost for my download of "Emotion".
