First there was the voice. The ethereal, loop-de-loop soprano has been replaced by a rich, earthy alto. Then there was the accompaniment. Instead of a single, spare guitar line there was a full orchestra. And in case that wasn't enough firepower, several songs featured Herbie Hancock on piano and Mark Isham on trumpet. Finally, there were the songs. A singer/songwriter famous for her idiosyncratic and highly personal folk-pop songs was content to spend most of the evening singing the songs of others, songs that have become standards because of their universal sweep." Again, the question comes up, "WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?" There were one or two interesting albums between STAS and BSN, in case you've been asleep for the last thirty years. The change in voice was, um, GRADUAL!?! It's disheartening to read these reviewers who don't know what they're talking about ... "Crazy Ride Home"?!?!?! Perhaps that critic also mourned the omission of the Joni Mitchell classics, "The Sunny Sunday of Ardor," "Ray's Dad's Lead Balloon," "The Three Great Flat Tire Prophesies," "Wild Wolves Live in Harry's House," and "Ludwig Sings the Blues (For Free)." On a happier note, I have been contentedly unwilling to remove BSN from my CD player for two days now. And while strolling through a bookstore, I heard a vaguely familiar piano chirping from the speakers overhead, when all of a sudden the delicious voice of Lady Release kicked in with "At Last." It seemed as if she were sighing to herself, in deep relief, that At Last the World at Large was standing up and recognizing her contributions. Amid all the tour hoopla, I wonder if this small question might be answered alongside all the ecstatic reports: what are the captions in the speech-balloons on the cover of DJRD? My CD booklet is printed so poorly, the only one I can read is, "How"! They are in row H (8th row after the orchestra section), seats 34 and 36 in the section to the right of center (the seats are adjacent - all seats in the section having even numbers). If you are interested, please contact me or Lori Fye . What a treat to read and, even though I am so envious, I am also so happy that almost total strangers can be brought together by their love for Joni and have a great time as if they've known each other personally for years. Which brings me to Sakatoon (or at least brings me to mention it--I'm still trying to work out exactly how I'm going to get there, where I'm going to stay, and if I'll be able to afford to eat while I'm there, not to mention that my wife may not be able to come with me because of her new job). I believe there are lists set up through the JMDL for special events that allow people to contact everyone at once without going through the main list. Would it be worthwhile or even possible to set up something like this? Or should we just continue posting privately, individually, or to the list to set up things like rendezvous points and suggested itineraries? Someone with more experience at this type of thing please let me know. Got a hold of a Saskatoon Jazz Festival program and saw that Holly Cole is performing the night of the Mendel opening and the following Sunday. Her last album was produced by Larry Klein. Is this connection enough to start fantasizing about Joni showing up during her concert to do a duet or two? And who is the mystery guest who will be performing at the still unannounced Saturday afternoon concert? Hmmm, speculation runs rampant.
