Choirgirl >Hotel, >Boys for Pele, Under the Pink are all superb and leave one in >no doubt >that a truly major creative force is at work. I like To Venus and Back better than Choirgirl, I think! So to each their own, I guess :) I *was* a little disappointed with the live album part of it but that is just because I have been to so many amazing concerts that a produced version can't hold up. And all the songs I was hoping would be on it aren't. (Except Cooling). >she is truly original. have u heard her cover Stevie Nicks' >Landslide?? >that is really good. though she adds the Tori >fingerprint "and if you >see my erection in the ...". well i may be >hearing it wrong. hope not >after sayign that! I do love her version of Landslide, but I never heard "erection"! I always thought she said "reflection" (which of course is what Stevie says.) Speaking of mondegreens, I was very amused with myself... thinking that Joni said "I was running like a wide-assed deer." I found myself trying to visualize how a wide-assed deer would run. Somehow the image doesn't map onto Joni very well! - -Yael np (in my head) "I was running like a wide-assed deer" on repeat ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 16:49:59 -0600 From: Bounced Message Subject: re: Joni's May 12 concert List Archives: Unsubscribe: - -------------------------------- From: "Joe Farrell" Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 23:23:52 +0100 Just want to wish everybody all the best for tonight. Deja vu and Dark Side of the Moon were not 60 albums for example. In my opinion, the 60s didn't start musically in America until 1964 when those lovable moptops from Liverpool, Gerry and the Pacemakers showed up. :) This is a joke; the lovable moptops were, of course, Herman's Hermits. Oh my, I've done it again. I can understand those who contend that the Beach Boys started those swinging 60s though. But I would counter that Chuck Berry was the one. I should define my terms I suppose. I'm thinking of the 60s as the era of Rock music, not the Rock n' Roll era. In that context then the wonderkinds from Sun Records, Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison yielded almost no influence at all upon those who followed. When I think of the 60s, I think of "Crosstown Traffic" by Jimi Hendrix and not "I Walk The Line". Historically, I contend that the 60s ended when the Hell's Angels knifed a Stones fan to death at Altamont. It certainly burst the metaphorical bubble of idealism that surrounded the new "Rock" music. Other opinions? Lori in DC said, To digress a bit ... while the 60s was certainly a turbulent and transforming decade, it was comprised of only ten years just like every other decade. Yet many people try to cram half of the events of the 70s into their "fond" memories of the 60s. WHY? All the best, Jim L'Hommedieu near Cincinnati ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 May 2000 20:59:45 -0500 From: "kerry" Subject: Favorite Careers (SJC) List Archives: Unsubscribe: - -------------------------------- I am enjoying the favorite careers thread and it's amazing how varied everyone's lists are. I had to throw mine in after contemplating it through several rush hour traffic jams. I agree that artists change from year to year, but there are certain musicians who are always there. Joni has been the only constant since I was 14 years old. (More than a few years ago!) I find myself looking "backward" (as someone else spoke of recently). I started out in high school loving John Denver (hey, I couldn't have learned to play guitar without him!) and now find myself liking music that I should have been into back then. Does that make sense? It goes without saying that Joni is #1. (Then why did I say it?) Anyway........... 1. Joan Armatrading - Unique voice and songwriting style. 2. James Taylor - Love the laid back feeling of his music. 3. CSNY (especially Y) - Classic, great music! 4. Fleetwood Mac & solo Stevie - (pre-Betty Ford) ;>) 5. Heart - Even though some of their music is formula radio stuff, it's damn fun! And Ann Wilson has one of the best rock and roll voices around!!! I heard her do a Led Zepplin song live a couple years ago and she blew him out of the water! 6. Ella Fitzgerald - What can I say? 7. Tom Petty - I like him 10x more after seeing him in concert! 8. Indigo Girls - They just keep getting better and better. 9. Bob Marley - Another classic! 10. Annie Lennox - Especially love her solo work. Another great voice. Honorable mention (another way to fit more in.....) : Led Zeppelin, Cat Stevens (Harold and Maude : best soundtrack to a movie ever!!!!!), Ani Difranco, DORIS DAY...... Okay, I have to stop now!!! Since everyone has a cool Joni name, I'm changing mine to: Carey (it's so close - it had to be done!) Let's now talk about fare-thee-wells now The night is a starry dome ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 May 2000 14:11:34 +1200 From: "Helen M. Personally, when someone talks about the "sixties" in a musical context, I always think of it as 1965 - 1975. Not sure why, but I think that "decade" was fairly spectacular in terms of the new music that evolved in that era. David Crosby describes it really well on a CSN video I have - I'll try and find his quote, and post it. LoL!) Urge was one of the songs Joni taught me herself and one which I played for years as part of my own sets. although I've never really thought about it before in this sense, you have a point. beside the fact that this song was particularly well suited to my voice, a kind of showtunish ('Mariah') alto-lead, *wondering if there is such a thing* of the material I performed, not a lot of the popular folk stuff of the time contained any particularly 'manly' moments (ie: the kind that made the ladies go hmmm) and, thinking of it now, Urge, as performed by a guy, did/does lend itself to such a feeling... two segments which stand out in my mind in this regard are 1) "I had a girl in summer time, with summer colored skin...' and, even more so, 2) the last verse which comes off particularly powerful in 'male mode', 'I'll lock the vagrant winter out, and bolt my wanderin' in...' ...on top of this, in a strong male voice, the melody line is very powerful, tending to give the listener chills if done right.
