I am so psyched for the upcoming tour, saw her in '76/'77 (?) at the aborted Cole Field House show in College Park, MD. Then saw her at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia MD in '83 for the Wild Things tour, and with Dylan in '98 at Cole Field House. She has cancelled as many shows as I have seen, when I had tickets and had to get my $ back, but I fully believe this orchestra tour will happen. With Joni, whom I love dearly, I'm never really sure what I will get, but I'm almost always happy. Enough said: I have 2 extra tickets for Merriweather on Thursday May 25, 2000 in Columbia MD, halfway between Baltimore and DC. They are in the pavilion in section Right Center row M (13th row) seats 2&4. I was able to get some better tickets, and two different couples who are friends of mine chose not to go and so I've got these two extras. The face value for the pair is $148 and with all the damn TM service charges its $168.35. I'd like to get at least $150 for the pair and would love them to go to a Joniphile. Please contact me directly at work: rspringham@bmhsi.org or at home at: ks3hams@aol.com if you are interested. Is this the proper place to discuss tapes? Maybe yes maybe no. Anyway, following 1998's various shows I was able to aquire numerous tapes, trading some of my older ones for new ones. Now I have approx 20 Joni bootlegs tapes, including The Gorge, Woodstock, MSG-NYC, and the last show in Atlanta. I also have tons of other stuff and wouldn't mind doing some current trading for this tour or the occassional postage and blanks deal. Again contact me privately, preferably at the home email. Joni released two albums during the 60s and NINE albums -- more than she released in any other decade - -- during the 70s. Regardless of the enduring myth to the contrary, she did not perform at Woodstock in 1969. Her "hits" occurred primarily in the 70s. Why then do journalists (and others) persist in calling her a "sixties icon?" It's nice that the reviewer also mentioned TTT, but ... It does Joni a great disservice to essentially dismiss the rest of her work by continuing to refer to her as a "sixties icon," even within the context of a good review about her latest album and tour. It bolsters the belief of many that she was and always has been a "folk singer," and that, until now, she hasn't produced much of anything since those "wonderful" 60s. To digress a bit ... while the 60s was certainly a turbulent and transforming decade, it was comprised of only ten years just like every other decade. Yet many people try to cram half of the events of the 70s into their "fond" memories of the 60s. WHY? Lori in DC NR (now reading): "How We Got Here: The 70's--The Decade that Brought You Modern Life--For Better or Worse" by David Frum. A *lot* of "60s" stuff actually happened in the 70s. And yet, people insist on remembering it as the 60s. A lot of it started in the 60s, but it was the *late* 60s really, so it carried forward. Does anyone know why these songs were not released in the late 1960's? Why didn't Joni relsase these songs on more albums?" I'm sure you've received lots of opinions on this... (pat, the way-behinder here) maybe the simplest answer is that she just recorded the best and left the rest. but this is a good question, nonetheless... as someone who had about a year and a half of monthly to bimonthly doses of live, coffeehouse Joni and was very familiar with all the second fret songs plus many more that were never recorded, even in that forum, I have often wondered about this myself. what was amazing to me was that when STAS first came out, having seen her play live (for the last time) only about four months beforehand, all told, only four of the ten songs had I ever heard before! but I have a somewhat 'furthermore' take on it: yes, we all know how Joni 'moved on', etc., etc. and how she now considers songs like NITC to be 'naive' and 'ditties' and there is little chance she would ever do any more with any of her early stuff, but I would really love to see someone, perhaps from this list, someone with a young, strong soprano/tenor voice, take as many of these previously unreleased and rarity songs as they could faithfully reproduce and, maybe with some help from Joni, record them for the sake of art and history, if nothing else. Give me a break. Joni was very young, so I understand, when she made that stuff up. I aree with you that the mythology is interesting and cute and maybe she could really do something with it once she sits down to writer her great Canadian/American novel (but she'd have to get rid of the bleepin' acronyms).
