I still am looking for someone to snatch up these great 5th row seats for Joni next week in West Palm Beach ... I can't believe what little response I've gotten! I thought for sure with all of us Joni diehards that it would be easy to find a good home for them. I cannot make this trip down there as it is about a 5 hour drive for me and I am still recouping from a car accident. I really am in a bad position financially as a result of the accident and I just need to get the cost of the tickets back. They cost $176 for the pair which includes the TM and facility charges. I will pay to overnight them to whoever buys them to make sure they will get them in time. Please help me out here to find someone who can use these seats. I'm getting nervous because it is only a week away! I trust that someone, somewhere would absolutely jump at the chance to see our beloved Joni from the 5th row!!! I know I would if I could. Even if there is no one on this list that is interested, if you have any suggestions of how and where to sell these, I would truly appreciate the guidance. Trying not to be desperate ... Leonard" Subject: Re: How Do You Stop Redux I do know *one* interesting fact about the song "How Do You Stop." It was first recorded (I believe it was the first version, anyway) in the mid-'80s by James Brown, the Godfather Of Soul, on his great, return-to-form album, Gravity. If I remember right, it was one of two ballads on the album, and he sang it straight...no vocal punctuations of the "hit me!" sort. :-) I was really surprised when it surfaced on TI. I thought it a strange choice for Joni. She does a nice version, though. I can't honestly say it's a favorite song of mine, by either James or Joni. So many interviews seem to cover the same ground. It would be great if Les or someone could interview Joni to get the answers to the stuff we really want to know. But my guess is that she heard the tune and possibly danced around the kitchen to James Brown's.album Gravity from 1986 (produced by Dan Hartman.) I already had the James Brown record but had totally forgotten about it untill I heard Joni's version in '94. The vocal on this is stunning, to me probably her best ever. The "gone" in "then it's gone" at 1.29 is the most hurt note I've ever heard. I'm happy to see people interested in Tori (not that I'm trying to turn this into a Tori list - ha ha). I just wanted to mention to those of you who haven't really managed to get into Tori because of her hard-to-understand-lyrics (it is true! they are hard to understand!), you should check out her cover of ACOY. It is amazing. It is one of my favorite Joni songs, as Joni performs it, and Tori's version *almost* rivals Joni's, I think - it is totally different in mood, but so beautiful. If you heard Diana Krall perform it on the tribute, it is more in that vein but a gazillion times for engaging and fluid and emotive than Diana did it (IMHO). It's also hard to find. But I am sure it can be found easily on Napster for those addicts, and there are other websites that have it up I'm sure. I'll see if I can find it and post a url. The following extract comes from an article called 'A Darker Shade of Blue' by David Hernden from NY Newsday in 1994. 'The single "How Do You Stop" takes aging head on: "One day youre too young/Then youre in you prime/Then youre looking back/At the hands of time." The song, co-written by the late Dan Hartman, is about neglecting to cultivate love in the hurly-burly of living.' 'Mitchell says she adopted the tune because, "There arent a lot of good middle-aged songs. I hope to write some for the next album. I have one already called Happiness Is the Best Face Lift. Well, my first-ever Joni purchase was also CMIARS (when I was sweet (?) sixteen). Once I'd heard My Secret Place, there was no other option but to have that CD, and everything developed from there. Even though I now have almost every Joni albums (MIA being the odd-one-out), My Secret Place is still my favourite Joni moment. It's never anything less than pure bliss to these ears of mine. > And I'm thrilled that she finally seems to be getting her long-overdue accolades and respect from the world at large. Yes, it is...I just wish two things were different. 1) It was with one of her own original albums such as NRH or TI (okay, she got Grammies for the latter but still...) and 2) Us poor souls in the UK were not so distanced from all these events such as the Tribute and so on. Oh, and 3) I also wish the post-Mingus work had been more prominent in the Tribute...but these are all just personal little gripes...well, not gripes...........aaaaaaaaaanyway! Thanks for finally clearing that up. I really love "I Can Dream About You"... its one of those irresistible songs that I never tire of. I just wish his album from 1984 (can't think of the name) would come out on cd. It had "We Are the Young", a minor dance hit, and "Second Nature", another irrestistible minor hit. I wonder how Joni stumbled on "How Do You Stop"? Listers, if ya run into her at the concerts, make sure y'all ask that question! BTW, "How Do You Stop" makes me melt -- Joni's "so fast/So SMMMMART" just makes me shiver. Powerful stuff indeed. In fact, I'll never forget an amazing incident that occurred one evening when I popped that song into my truck stereo while driving home from work. I hadn't had that tape out of it's box in many moons prior to that particular playing, and just as the "mystery" of Paprika Plains was unfolding a massive flock of crows (I'm talking hundreds) appeared on the horizon, passed overhead, and then floated off toward the Hudson River. No doubt one of life's many sweet synchronicities... Buenas noches- Paul (who would gladly take the JM-coined "HWIEFOB" as a top-secret nickname) S. Com List Archives: Unsubscribe: - -------------------------------- oh geez catman... you are too kind. I have, for some reason, aged "well"....I suppose...at least from the neck up. I am *just*, at age 51, beginning to get a few, and very few at that, strands of grey in my otherwise medium brown/auburn hair: that's genes, right? And a few wrinkles are starting to appear: crowsfeet I think they're called. Genetic also, yes? The rest of the body has changed radically in the past 3 years since I've been on protease inhibitor therapy for hiv/aids. It's causing weird lipid metabolism and fat deposits and muscle wasting. This latter phenomenon is really hard to handle, as I used to really look 10+ years younger than my age...and now, naked, that is definitely no longer true. So I struggle with this weird body image and gratitude for being alive and surviving. It's a hard balance. I was 20 in the summer of '69. Maybe it was the brown acid that slowed down the aging process. It certainly helped me spiritually grow and regard time differently. Too much information? I'm flattered you actually clicked on my photo. Are you going to be at the Concord concert? It is supposed to get cooler into the low 50's Saturday... and rain by Sunday morning they are saying. I hope the cold doesn't affect dear Joni's voice. I know I will be sending her waves of love and warmth from where I sit. Richard, who you can also find way way more about by clicking http://www.home.earthlink.net/~richard2sf if you haven't already figured that out. =-=-=-= On 5/12/2000, catman wrote: >You were at Woodstock in 69 so: >you were either a baby who was into everything and took the brown acid >by mistake(or you had terrible gaurdians) >Brown acid is a preservative >You have lots of money (and little sense) and could afford loads of >plastic surgery >or you have a picture on you web page that was taken 20 years ago! >Or you are just lucky and have good genes. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2000 #181 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list at ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
